Are you using Ubuntu One in a network requiring a proxy? If that's the case, this version sadly doesn't support it.
Natalia Bidart (nataliabidart) wrote : | #5 |
Hello,
The error means the syncdaemon is not able to start. Can you please confirm what's your windows username?
We had some issues when the username has non-ascii, the fix is done and will be released today or next Monday.
Thanks!
Natalia.

Still have the same error message.

I've installed vers. 2.0.1 but the problem remains.

I've got the same issue. No non-ascii characters in my user profile and I'm running 64 Bit Windows 7 SP1.
The beta package was running fine and this broke when I tried to upgrade to the proper release for windows. Removing and reinstalling does nothing to improve the situation but when my PC boots up I have an ubuntuone sync daemon process that will chew up 50% + of the processor all day long and I must kill it manually in order to use the computer.

Hello all,
We have investigated this matter and we haven't been able to diagnose why syncdaemon is not starting further than noticing that we have some issues with non-ascii characters either in the user name, or in any directory in the user home.
So, for example, in a windows installation with .es locale, the home directory may have the string "Documentos y Configuración" in the user home path, and that breaks syncdaemon.
We're working hard on having all these bits working, since we were relaying on the user home be properly calculated in Python, but is not, so we need to code our own version of os.expanduser.
To anyone subscribed to this bug report, could you please state:
* what windows version you're running
* what windows locale you have
* your windows username
* the full path to your user home, without changing any non-ascii character
And if you don't have sensible information, please attach all your logs files located at:
Win XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\
Win 7:
C:\Users\
Thanks everyone for helping us debugging this issue further.
Regards, Natalia.

I found a solution for my problem:
In the initial installation of ubuntu one client, the shared folder was created in c:\XXXXXXX\Ubuntu One (The folder name and contents is under NDA so I cannot disclose them). I don't know why because I am pretty sure I wouldn't install it there if a was given an option. The client placed the shared folder on the same place when I installed it on a XP VM.
The problem in question (which was not encountered in the VM) started when I renamed the folder to something else. I now renamed it back and the client works ok.
In my point of view, even now that I fixed the client, there is still a bug in the client as I surely don't want it to be in that directory. Can't it be installed in the user directory or documents directory?
(note: my original bug report was Bug #880511 in case you need any further information)

Maybe there are problem with Python handling paths with non-ascii characters.

I can say that at some point, the sync worked. According to my UbuntuOne folders, they were updated as recently as 20 hours ago. When I open these folders, however, they come up empty. Looking at actual filenames, it looks like the last time it synced properly was 10-27-2011.

I have access to three machines, all running Windows 7 Professional. I have linked my U1 account on all of these. On two of them, it works like a charm. However, on the third machine, I'm stuck at that "Getting information" screen, and it just won't go any further. Windows settings are similar on the machines. No firewalls besides from firewall.cpl, which I tried temporarily disabling. It didn't do any good. In fact, the machine that is stuck is directly connected to the Internet (over a DHCP hook), whereas the other machines are connected over a LAN (router-wise). Shouldn't make any difference, though.
Another funny thing. Here this. On the computer where it fails, if I make a new user account and log on to it and run Ubuntu One, it smoothly connects and syncs and all is fine. Then, I add administrator rights to this particular account, and when I re-log and run Ubuntu One I get that stupid "Getting information" screen, and nothing else. I have read some threads about old versions of U1 having problems with being run on accounts without admin rights. Well, in my case it seems reversed, wouldn't you say?
Any ideas?

I also found that 2.0.3 seems to be working for me. I made sure to uninstall 2.0.2 and remove UB1 folders from Documents and Settings folders. I also moved the Ubuntu One folder to the desktop from my user folder. This caused all of these files to be removed from the server, but then I copied them back to the folder and they re-synced. Hi friends,
Some of your problems might have been caused by bug #930398. That bug appeared on version 2.99.3, so we rolled back to version 2.0.3 while working on a fix. So, if you got the 2.99.3 installer, you might want to give a try to the 2.0.3 in the meantime. https:/
This will be fixed in the next release, that will be published as soon as we finish with the rush for the Ubuntu version. We are really sorry about this and the problems that it might have caused you.
As always, your comments and reports are much appreciated. Thanks!
pura vida,
Leo.

This bug started after I upgraded to v3. and I get the same symptoms as everyone else. I'm running Windows 7 x64 fully updated and my user name does not contain any non-ascii characters. My network doesn't use a proxy. windows local is en gb (English United Kingdom).
I tried uninstalling Ubuntu 1 and deleting any remaining folders I found in my AppData folders etc. but it still tries to logon with my credentials (I must be missing some folders and files somewhere). I've uploaded my freshly installed logs for clarity but it seems there's a problem with a Python class according to the logs.
If someone could let me know where U1 stores it's settings and credentials files, let me know so I can try a complete fresh install to see if that fixes the problem.

OK, this is what worked for me:
1) I have a second computer (Windows 7 Pro x64), which I usually don't use (it's my old laptop). I decided to see if there was a problem there. Nop, everthing was working fine (Ubuntu One 2.0.3). Then I tried the autoupgrade. Didn't work. I was so pissed off that I almost threw the computer away through the window.
2) I decided to take my time, a little bit of fresh air, went for a coffee, thought about how the day had started raining and now there was sunshine all over.
3) More than 15 minutes later, I came back to the old computer. I tried executing the autoupgrade running the application "as administrator". It worked! Now, my old computer had Ubuntu One 3.0.0 running with no problems. I tested it (create a new file in the Ubuntu One folder) and worked fine.
4) Playing with the tabs of the application in my old computer I ended up in my Ubuntu One webpage (in the browser). For my surprise, I found that there were 2 duplicated devices: my old computer (Asus G1) and my new computer (Asus N73). I figured out that it might be something wrong with that. I deleted the old entry for my old computer (left the new one, apparently, Ubuntu One 2.0.3 created one "device", and Ubuntu 3.0.0 created another "device" for the same computer). I also deleted both entries of my old computer.
5) Went back to my old computer and uninstalled Ubuntu One, deleted the "ubuntuone" folder in "Program Files (x86)", and also the Ubuntu One credential (go to Control Panel, search for Credentials, and look for the Ubuntu One credential and remove it. Basically, uninstalled Ubuntu One and left no trace of it.
6) Downloaded from scratch Ubuntu One 3.0.0 and installed it running it "as Administrator". It asked me to sign up. It logged in and went to the "sync folders" step. It was taking a while again, but I simply click on "Next" and went to the next step, where I could find all my sync folders listed. I click finish and the Ubuntu One control panel appeared. No "get_rootdir" error. It quickly updated the files.
7) Et voilà, Ubuntu One 3.0.0 working also in my new laptop.
I have no clue what of all I did was exactly what it made the thing work. Perhaps you may find an technical explanation. I hope this serves to someone else.

I am sorry, reading my comment above I realized that there were wrong references. I cannot edit the comment, so I copy and paste the post with the right references. I AM SORRY FOR THE MESS:
I also deleted both entries of my NEW computer.
5) Went back to my NEW computer and uninstalled Ubuntu One, deleted the "ubuntuone" folder in "Program Files (x86)", and also the Ubuntu One credential (go to Control Panel, search for Credentials, and look for the Ubuntu One credential and remove it. Basically, I uninstalled Ubuntu One and left no trace of it in my NEW computer (checked the Ubuntu One web feature and there were therefore only 2 devices, my OLD computer and my tablet).
6) Downloaded from scratch Ubuntu One 3.0.0 in my NEW computer and installed it running it "as Administrator". It asked me to sign up. It logged in and went to the "sync folders" step. It was taking a while again, but I simply click on "Next" and went to the next step, where I could find all my sync folders listed. I click finish and the Ubuntu One control panel appeared. 7) Et voilà, Ubuntu One 3.0.0 is working also in my NEW laptop.

hi,
I've also what seems to be the same failure: I'm using windows 7 64 bit, and installed unbutu one beta several months ago, as my main folders are on other machines powerde by ubuntu.
the first beta version ran good during several months, but sync do not work since 2011 september.
I've tried to install an re-install u1. today I ran window's unistall programm to remove U1 program, deleted the U1 folder on Hard drive, and re-install last version properly.
after launching program, an update is suggested, that I accepted, and then I get a pop up with message "getting information, please wait"
and then an other window with following message:
-------
Ubuntu One experienced an error
-------
Sorry, an error has occurred and Ubuntu One needs to close.
-------
Close Hide Details...
-------
by reading above posts, I don't see any solution...
hope it will come soon!
anyway thank you to all people looking for it

Downgrade from the currect 3.0.2 version to 2.0.3 did not help.
