Same issue here. When I select System\Log Out <Username> and next <Logout> the process hangs or crashes my X server. Not even possible anymore to go to a console screen.
Using Gnome-applets 2.14.1-Oubuntu2.

Dapper Beta on HP nc8230, same problem.
Alt + Ctrl + Backspace works.
Logout through menu works sometimes, but never when a terminal is running.
Mouse pointer works (until I have smashed enough keys on the keyboard) but nothing else reacts.
g-a 0.14.1-0ubuntu2
May seem like a gdm-problem og related.

Matt,
Is that still useful after a reload? Because most of the times when it
happens, I can't access the other terminals anymore either.

No, it's not useful after a restart. Do you mean that ctrl-alt-F1 doesn't work by example? Might be a linux or video driver issue, do you have an issue logged to /var/log/messages or /var/log/syslog?
rfonteyn (roel-fonteyn) wrote : | #8 |
ctrl-alt-F1 doesn't respond anymore indeed.
Lately, I try not to use the logout functionality, to avoid this behavior. And I can recall when the last time was that I did try this. So it would take to long to search for.
And as I just entered the office, I'm not going to try it now. I'm still in the process to convince them that it's ok to run Linux in the office. So invoking a crash wouldn't be a smart thing. I'll give it a try around noon (CET+1) and update the bugreport afterwards.
rfonteyn (roel-fonteyn) wrote : | #10 |
Tried the logout again. Apparently the behavior has changed a bit. No the screen just turns black. Still not possible to get into another console or do anything else. After a forced reboot, checked the messages and syslog, but nothing indicates anything being crashed.
Any specifics you want or do you want me to post the loggings themselves?

Here it happens consistently, all the time, using Ubuntu and Xubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft *Live* CDs (so it's not a problem with a particular install). The problem occurs on both XFCE and Gnome.
After clicking on "Logout", or pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, all the windows and panels disappear - only the wallpaper and the mouse arrow are left on the screen. The mouse arrow still works, but not the keyboard: Caps Lock led doesn't turn on, and I can't switch to another console (Ctrl+Alt+
I'm not using any 3D drivers, just an old on-board VGA adapter, so I don't think it's related to nVidia drivers, fglrx or compiz. Everything used to work fine on Dapper.
The machine I'm using is an old Athlon 1200+ in a motherboard PC Chips M810-D (the chipset is SIS 740). Mouse and keyboard are USB, but I also tried with standard PS/2.
I've disabled ACPI (on BIOS setup, in order to solve USB problems), but it didn't affect the bug.
This problem is so annoying that I'll probably go back to Dapper if there's no hope of solving it soon... :-(

I have the same problem with Kubuntu Edgy. It happens either with logout and with shutdown. although it is rare with shutdown, but with logout it happens every time..
In my case when the error occurs, my monitor just turns black and starts saying "Imput format not supported". Which indicates that Kubuntu is sendig some strange resolution/refresh rate to the monitor.. All disk activity stops, and the systems doen't respond to any input, not even the Num Lock light can be turned on...
Btw, i'm using Kubuntu 6.10 with the nVidia binary drivers.

Happens every time try to Logout both from GNOME and XFCE. Ctrl-Alt-Bkspc doesn't help. Screen freezes with wallpaper, mouse frozen. Can't Ctrl-Alt-Fn to console.
Restart and Shutdown both OK, only affects Logout.

In 6.10, I use for an X200 onboard card. It used to hang when I attempt to logout. It also doesn't hang when I press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
I tried, as suggested by Sebastien Bacher, to edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use "ati" instead of "fglrx". I can now, using "ati", logout with success.
So, I changed it back from "ati" to "fglrx" and, after a restart of X, tried to logout. Computer hangs with a blank screen again.
So, it seems to be related with the "fglrx" being used.
Hope this will help.

Sometimes after logging out, the Kubuntu shutdown progress bar appears momentarily, and then I'm left with a blank screen with a cursor top left. Keyboard input is echoed to the screen but that's it for functionality.
It appears to happen more often when using "switch user"
kajhaul (kaj-haulrich) wrote : | #28 |
Clean install x 5 of Feisty : same problem (system locks on user logout). Using ati driver. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace doesn't kill X. Must use the "elephant sequence" to reboot safely. Adding "acpi=force" to kernel line in grub makes no difference.
THIS IS A SHOWSTOPPER.
InlawBiker (gmonsquared) wrote : | #29 |
I have recently installed 7.04 Feisty and have narrowed the problem down a bit trying to get my ATI x800-PRO to support two monitors.
editing xorg.conf, disabling Composite causes the bug to occur. I can repeat by doing this:
1. Add the following line to xorg.conf:
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "0"
EndSection
2. Switch users, log out or hit cnt+alt+backspace = black screen hang
3. Remove the above line from step one 1 repeat - the black screen bug goes away in all cases.
Hope this helps.

Well, since I don't have that section in xorg.conf it can hardly be
the culprit. The problem persists - at random. The workaround is
hitting <Ctrl><Alt><Backsp> BEFORE clicking "logout".

InlawBiker,
On my x200m with fglrx 8.34.8, enabling composite fixes the problem, but so does preventing the kernel module from loading. Both steps disable 3D/DRI, so I suspect that the root cause of the problem is having 3d enabled.

Maybe... but I don't have 3D enabled. However I changed my BIOS to

So similar to the solution for gdm-users, if you use kdm:

you've got to add the line

Some Further information to help narrow down the problem source:
Problem:
Clean install of Kubuntu 7.04 on a IBM TP21.
If I try to just logout, it won't relogin.
But the following all work:
a. I can reboot this machine with no problem,
b. Using ctrl-alt-bspc performs a relogin with no problems.
a. I have a copy of Ubuntu 7.04 on a different partition with no problems,
ie logout/login works OK.
So the problem is not with either the graphics card or with xorg.conf.
What happens:
After logging out,
1st I get the Kubuntu logo screen with a black progress bar
then flashing cursor on blank screen.
Any input is reflected on screen but doesn't seem to be processed,
eg c-alt-bspc, ctrl-c, ctrl-z
I have to change to tty1 (c-a-F1),
login as root and shutdown.
The system log shows the attached errors:
kdm :0[5312]: IO Error in XOpenDisplay
kdm[5018] Display :0 cannot be opened
kdm[5018] Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling
but again these errors do not happen on re-boot.
Michael Mayer 's workaround works for me also,
ie adding the line:
TerminateServer
in the [X-:*-Core] section of the kdmrc-File (/etc/kde3/
Hope this is helpful.

First logout will always hang on either machine, however ctl-alt-backspace will kill the X server and result in a successful gdm restart.
After using ctl-alt-backspace, logouts work without issue. The only time it will hang is on the first logout, unless I use ctl-alt-backspace.
Quite odd.

I am also experiencing a similar issue with Kubuntu 8.04 (AMD64). Video is ATI X1250 with latest fglrx (re-downloaded again yesterday, from Ubuntu repositories) and no compiz fusion. It consistently goes to black screen after logout or attempt to restart. The Ctrl-Alt-Fx keys and Ctrl-Alt-Backspace do not work, though Ctrl-Alt-Del will eventually bring back the splash logout screen if I repeat it a half dozen times. Using regular Vesa removes the problem, but I am unable to use any of the other ATI drivers (ATI Vesa, radeon) because the OS insists the video doesn't support it. If I try to select these anyway, I boot up to a black screen and have to restore settings from the command line. So, using the accelerated driver is my only option. fglrx works fine except as noted above, although I've had one instance in the last 10 days (since initial install) that the system froze during a GL screensaver.
Dorgendubal (svenwerlen) wrote : | #60 |
Same problem for me on two different computers with latest ATI drivers.
- without fglrx => works ok
- with fglrx => hangs on reboot / halt / logout
Symptom: mouse cursor disappear after several seconds and nothing cannot be done then. CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE doesn't react. CTRL+ALT+F1/F2... neither. I can only hold the power button for 2 seconds to start the shutdown mechanism.
After some investigation, I can also reproduce this error by switching to the terminal and executing /etc/init.d/kdm stop. I get then the following error: "kdm not responding TERM signal". Xorg uses then 100% CPU (forever) and kdm cannot be killed. If I switch to X again, the screen gets black and I cannot do anything anymore...
One of my collegues uses the same Xorg configuration, the same graphic drivers on the same notebook and doesn't have that problem. But he's using Ubuntu (I'm using Kubuntu).
Very strange???

I am having the same problem on Kubuntu Hardy (with the latest ATI drivers).
Unfortunately the settings suggested by Dorgendubal did not fix this issue for me, but I have found another (dirty) workaround:
Dont use the "Logout" button on the K-Menu but rather just kill the XServer using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace. If I do that X restarts just fine, and I get back to the login screen.
Dorgendubal (svenwerlen) wrote : | #63 |

Currently, I can't use the normal KDE shutdown buttons (Logout, Shutdown, Reboot). I switch to the console and manually execute "reboot" or "halt".

My system used to work fine when I was running Feisty.
I recently upgraded to Hardy and, since then, everytime I go "System --> Logout" or simply click the shutdown button next to the system clock on gnome panel, I don't even get the options screen. The system simply hangs up. I can do ctrl+alt+backspace though. From GDM I'm able to shutdown and reboot.

I've had the same problem with KDM in Kubuntu Hardy. Ilogout, and then I get nothing but a black screen. I couldn't use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to kill X, and the terminals were unresponsive. To make matters worse, there's no errors in the xorg log, so I can't help in that effect.
If it helps, the laptop is an eMachines M2352 with an ATi Raedon Mobility (unknown model) but doesn't use the restricted drivers. The desktop, which also had the same problem, has a nVidia GeForce 8300 GS, and uses the restricted drivers.

I just upgraded to Ubuntu Hardy and found myself in the same situation. After I logout my computer freezes and my only way out is a hard reset. Things that I have done include:
1. Booted Hardy with the Feisty kernel. No changes.
2. Created a brand new user and tried login in and out. No changes.
3. Modified my xorg.conf file to force X to use the VESA driver ... success, no more freezes after logout.
Of course with this last option I get a sub-optimal desktop but this makes me conclude that the problem is X-related. My first call would have been to blame the new Intel driver in xorg since I have an ASUS P5E-VM mother board with the Intel G35 (3500) chipset. But several people report the same problem with non-Intel chipsets/boards so the problem is probably deeper than that, but definitevely X-related.

I've noticed this problem with every release. Let me quantify that by saying, when I install the NVIDIA drivers manually (I'm not using packaged drivers) and I logout of my system, KDM fails, and I get black screen. CRTL+ALT+BACKSPACE does not restart X, instead I have to swtch to a terminal login, and restart KDM that way. I've only noticed this problem with manually installed NVIDIA drivers, and I've experienced this on Dapper, Fesity, and Hardy. I'm using the NVIDIA 96.43 version drivers- and I have two versions of Kubuntu running. I am running i386 with Feisty, and x86_64 with Hardy.
I dont' know where to start with where to look- anyone know of any log files I can check on to see if something is crashing?
I can't comment on whether or not this problem occurs using packaged drivers because I always manually install them when I do a fresh install of any release.

Sorry I don't have any logs to attach, but there's no errors being reported. The system goes to a black screen, and the only input it will accept is CTRL-ALT-DEL to reboot.

I think I encountered the same problem on my computer. I believe its related to the keytouchd daemon. Here are the requested logs.

I can confirm what Haggai Eran just say.
I had Keytouch installed. I just removed completely. That solved my problem.
Hard to believe it. I tried so many things...
Ubuntu hardy 64 bit
Nvidia Card

I can confirm that removing keytouch indeed solved problem for me too :)
Who would ever think it was just keytouch :D LOL
Thanks for effort!

On my environment, it doesn't work. Keytouch is not installed but I still have the same symptoms. Logout is hanging until I press the Power button.

I do not have this problem with the latest version.

I would like to have the logout sound enabled if somebody can investigate why disabling this causes the shutdown to work properly.
Please try to fix this. This makes this product look bad.

Hi there
I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with Gnome and I have the same problem!
I'm running a Dell Inspiron 8600 1.7GHz with an ATi Radeon 9600 Turbo Pro graphic card. Everything just works fine and I get fine result with the glxgears and fglrxinfo. I haven't setup anything only enabled the 3D and installed Compiz fusion.
When I logout or switch user it's going in black screen and can't do anything but push the power button :(
It's running fglrx in the xorg.conf. I have tryed to change the fglrx to ati and then it works, but then the 3D isn't working.
Some say it's because of the atieventsd.sh script has some wrong file destinations and then locks up. But I'm a newbie here, so don't know anything about it.
I have tryed all this without any succes:
System freezes after logout with GDM or KDM
If you use GDM modify
File: /etc/X11/
AlwaysRestartSe
If you use KDM add to the [X-:*-Core] section the following
File: /usr/kde/
TerminateServer
Edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use "ati" instead of "fglrx"? fixed the problem for me, but then compiz doesn't work.
If you experience hangs when logging out (of X) it is probably due to the /etc/ati/
You can kill the hanging authatieventsd.sh processes from a console tty to allow the shutdown of the X server. This can be fixed permanently with:
sudo mkdir -p /var/lib/
sudo ln -s /var/run/xauth /var/lib/
If that doesn't work then you can disable atieventsd with this command:
sudo /usr/sbin/
I have also tryed all of this described here:
http://

http://
Does anyone else have a solution for the problem?
I don´t know if I run the free og restricted ati driver...it's the one from Ubuntu 8.04 when I installed it.
Can I do something to help? Because it's pretty ignoring.
This bug is quit similar to this, where I also have posted:
https:/
Best regards
Kenneth

assigning to the fglrx package, since that's the one confirmed cause of this problem. If you are experiencing hangs on logout and you aren't using the fglrx driver with an ATI video chipset, you should open a new bug report since your problem is unrelated to this and should be tracked separately.
fglrx is currently inoperable for Ubuntu 8.10, due to a lack of compatible binary drivers from ATI, so this issue may be "fixed" for intrepid in any case...
Pedro I. Sanchez (pirivan) wrote : | #83 |
If by the ATI driver being "the one confirmed [to] cause of this problem" you mean the *only* one to be confirmed to cause this problem then please take a look at bug 229043. That bug deals with the same problem on an Intel G35-base mother board. Even though the title of the bug reads "freezing when shutting down" it is in fact about "freezing when logging out". It's not closed yet unfortunately.
The Intel driver has also been identified to have this problem (see comment 41) in the bug report. I hope this will get fixed soon in the light of the LTS label of the 8.04 release.

Good day PDP,
I've just uploaded a new 8.543 version of -fglrx to Intrepid which now should work with xserver 1.5. Would you mind testing this new version and reporting back whether this issue is still present? If it is, it would be helpful if you could (re-)post your Xorg.0.log from running with this version. Thanks ahead of time.
If you don't have Intrepid installed on your system, you can test this by booting an Intrepid LiveCD (available from cdimage.
If you find any new issues, please report them as separate bugs. You can use the tool `ubuntu-bug fglrx-installer` which will gather the necessary files and create the launchpad report for you to fill in more easily.

I can confirm that this issue is still present on Intrepid (kdm) using fglrx version 2:8.543-0ubuntu2.
I can also confirm that Ken4000's proposed solution works. I suppose that adding a patch against the GetServerAuthFile() function in /etc/ati/

I'm not sure particularly where the problem is in authatieventsd.sh? It looks like it will check the xdm/kdm location and then fall back to the gdm location.
Does this failure ONLY happen with KDM then? Is something particularly wrong with the KDM location that is checked?

OK, can someone encountering this problem please try the attached authatieventsd.sh? If this resolves the situation, then we'll add a patch to our package.

Actually, this bug's description is quite general, so there may be different factors involved. It works for me though.

Can you be more specific?
(1) didn't work for you before w/ KDM, the "fix" works for you with KDM
(2) it worked before for you w/ KDM, the "fix" causes no harm with KDM
(3) didn't work for you before w/ GDM, the "fix" works for you with GDM
(4) it worked for you before w/ GDM, the "fix" works for you with GDM

Hello Mario,
yes, your authatieventsd.sh fixes the "Logout process hangs" problem for me (after doing a reboot):
... tried first with up-to-date Kubuntu 8.10 x64 from today -> Logout process hangs ... replaced the authatieventsd.sh
with yours ... reboot ... tried again - logout works like it should.
Thanks,
Simon

Can you indicate what version of gnome-applets you have on your system?
