I fear this report is going to attract multiple different bugs which will be difficult to disentangle.

I think your best bet is to file a new bug report and post a link to your new bug report here. I would also also report in the new bug whether turning off desktop effects (when using the intel drivers) by going to System -> Preferences -> Appearance | Visual Effects and choosing None resolves the issue.
