I have the same problem with Kubuntu Edgy. It happens either with logout and with shutdown. although it is rare with shutdown, but with logout it happens every time..

In my case when the error occurs, my monitor just turns black and starts saying "Imput format not supported". Which indicates that Kubuntu is sendig some strange resolution/refresh rate to the monitor.. All disk activity stops, and the systems doen't respond to any input, not even the Num Lock light can be turned on...

Btw, i'm using Kubuntu 6.10 with the nVidia binary drivers.
