Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

For the past few weeks, builds of Firefox 3.5, 3.6, and 3.7 have exhibited a behavior where the autocomplete of the so-called awesome bar will only work sporadically.

There are some times where the autocomplete will not work at all and other times when it will appear for a few milliseconds after typing a letter before disappearing.

I haven't been able to pin-point what causes this, but I have found that restarting the browser resolves the issue until it occurs again.

This doesn't happen very often, but at least a few times each day.

Reproducible: Sometimes
==========
SRU:

This bug affects all users using compiz and Firefox.Patch is taken from the compiz 0.8.8 branch from upstream cgit. Patch has also been port-forwarded to 0.9 branch and is available in latest Natty compiz package.

TestCase:

With current stock Ubuntu compiz packages:
1- When Firefox is open; allow screensaver to kick-in (or resume from suspend) and then start using Firefox
2- Notice Awesome bar does not auto-complete with suggestions(firefox 3.6) and bookmarks menu, context menu are completely unusable(Firefox 4).

Install compiz package from -proposed:
Awesome bar, Context menu, bookmarks menus all work normally

Regression potential:
None ( maybe users notice more awesomeness of Firefox 4?)

==========
SRU packages:
For Ubuntu 10.10 : Maverick-proposed > Compiz 1:0.8.6-0ubuntu9.2
For Ubuntu 10.04 : Lucid-proposed > Compiz 1:0.8.4-0ubuntu15.3

==========
Compiz commit which seems to fix the issue for Firefox:

This bug does not affect Firefox 3.5 on Windows. I have seen it on both Ubuntu 9.04 and now on the beta of 9.10.

It usually happens to me when I resume from suspend and have left Firefox running. I then close and re-open Firefox, and the address bar then responds.

re: right-clicking

Yeah, that's weird. Right-clicking does two things. It brings up a context menu and it clears the address bar which then changes to "Search Bookmarks and History".

With the address bar working correctly, right clicking does only one thing, it brings up the context menu, it does not clear the address bar.

Manually clearing the contents of the address when it is stuck also restores normal functionality, though a quick right then left click is faster.

I also have this issue.
It's seems like it happens after I leave firefox running and the screensaver starts.
To "correct" it I just left-click the icon to the left of the address-bar twice, I don't remember the name of that icon, but for launchpad.net it's a white square with the letter lp in it. favicon?? The first click gives me a security message, the second removes that message. Then it works for a while again.

But I while back I turned the screensaver off and only use powermanager - turn off screen after n minutes. Since then I don't know if I ever have had that problem again.

Same problem here. Both Jaunty+Karmic with compiz enabled, ATI graphics card. seems to occur mostly (but still feeling random) when I'm away from the computer or unfocused from FF. Happened first in Shiretoko, and then went back to Firefox 3.5 and the same problem reoccurs. doubleclicking the favicon to the left seems to re-enable, or a browser restart.

It only happens when coming back to the desktop after the screensaver has been running but then again not every time so I can't make it happen. I can't type in the address bar at all. I type one letter and it is immediately selected so that when you type another it is overwritten. I have compiz running, Nvidia graphics card. 64-bit.If I switch to another desktop (ctrl-alt-right) and back again(ctrl-alt-left) then I can type normally. Hilkus: the bug I'm having isn't as you describe. I can type just fine, it doesn't get overwritten. It simply that the autocomplete suggestions don't pop up. Sometimes as I type I can see them appear for a split second then disappear. I can't confirm this, but I think that gnome or compiz or something else is causing them to be drawn *behind* the Firefox window instead of in the foreground. Alt-TABing to another window then back to firefox fixes which window it thinks is in the foreground hence it works again.

When waking up after having gone into screen saver mode, Eclipse is unresponsive
to keystrokes. Mouse still works.

Workaround 1:
- switch workspace and back. I mean X workspaces, not Eclipse workspaces. Eg. CTRL-ALT-RIGHTARROW followed by CTRL-ALT_LEFTARROW.

Workaround 2:
- restart Eclipse

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start Eclipse and work a bit, then leave it alone until the screen saver kicks in (simple screen fading to black in my case). Make sure you have eg. an editor open (in my case a java file, but I don't think it matters).
2. Wake it up again eg. by moving the mouse
3. Try typing: it doesn't work!

Alright, noticed a couple more things about what happens when Firefox gets in this mode:

1) After selecting all of the text in the url bar, mousing out of the window (like moving your mouse over the title bar) will unselect everything in the url bar, much like what would happen if you focused another window.

2) After clearing everything in the address bar, mousing out of the window will show the emptytext ("Search Bookmarks and History"), much like what would happen if you focused something else.

Focusing another window will take Firefox out of this mode.

This problem is really not okay for Ubuntu users.

Some people are saying the bug is not having a dropdown list and others are saying it's a bug with the text highlighting however, it would appear there one bug relating to that setting in about:config rather than two separate bugs.

It's been happening since day 1 of Jaunty and exists in Ubuntu 32, Ubuntu 64 and every version of Firefox I've tried (except it does not appear in the Windows variants). Not sure why this bug is so elusive.

I've narrowed down a way to reproduce this on Ubuntu 9.10:
1. Open a Firefox window.
2. Suspend the computer.
3. Unsuspend it back (note: in my case, I have to unlock the screen).

After this, the address bar autocompletion in the previously open window is broken. A way to fix it is to get keyboard focus elsewhere (I use right-click menu on the gnome panel) and then return it to the location bar.

Similar behavior is observed with Eclipse 3.5. In fact, it's worse there, because keyboard presses cease to have any effect when the buggy state is reached.
In an unrelated Eclipse bug, it's been noted that certain changes made in Gtk+ 2.18 may break applications or widget frameworks that are using Gtk+ in weird undocumented ways which happened to work before.

For me this is the most visible and work-flow interrupting bug in the beta so far.

Allow me to address this. The papercuts project is designed to fix bugs that don't require a lot of work but potentially affect a lot of users. This bug does affect a lot of users, but does not have an easy fix. However, this only means it is not suitable to be worked on through the papercuts project, and not that it won't get fixed at all. In fact, the vast majority of bugs (all besides 100 each release) get fixed outside of the papercuts project, so this bug still has a good chance of getting fixed soon.

No awesome bar comes up, no search auto suggest window comes up as you type, instead of when the window would normally come up, all of the text is highlighted. So, if you were typing something obscure into search box that would not normally trigger the suggest window to come up, the text would not be highlighted.

I use compiz all the time, so I can't say whether or not it is related to compiz. It is hard to reproduce, as it does not always happen, and it never happens if I try to reproduce it by using preview screensaver in the preferences. It may very well be that it is related to compiz, but at the same time, one person already said that it does not happen when using a FF build directly from mozilla, so it might be a combination of packages that cause this bug to occur.

diego (marcodiegomesquita) wrote :

Comment #50 is interesting. Maybe a combination of FF + Compiz + emerging from an screensaver is making the awesome bar been drawn behind FF window. As a simple fix, we would suggest FF devs to set the awesome bar window as "always on top"; I think that is the simplest way to fix this issue.

Also, it may be focus related. I've just discovered that if the bug is triggered while running kile, then anything I type will not be "received" by kile. If I switch back-and-forth from one desktop to another the bug goes away.

Anyone can confirm this same behavior in kile or anethor kde/qt 4 program?

Compiz is very likely a factor here. Following diego's advice, I switched the window manager to Metacity (using Compiz Fusion Icon), restarted Firefox, checked if the awesomebar was working (it was, no surprise here), suspended, resumed and immediately tried the awesomebar again. It was still working! Then I re-enabled Compiz, went through another suspend-and-resume cycle, and the old behavior (no suggestions coming up) was back.

Another thing that may or may not be relevant here: I have two portable computers, an Atom netbook running i386 Ubuntu and a Core 2 Duo notebook running the amd64 version. My home directories, including Firefox profiles as well as all dot files and directories, are the same on both machines and get synchronized periodically. On the 32-bit netbook I get the awesomebar issue each and every time after suspending with Firefox running, whereas on the 64-bit notebook I have never ever encountered it. That's the current situation with Lucid, and it was the same with Karmic. The two machines have, of course, vastly different hardware, but the selection of manually installed packages is very similiar.

Ubuntu 9.10 64-bits with compiz here,

I've found another way to trigger that bug than with screensaver or suspend/resume (and yes, I do have the bug with screensaver and suspend/resume ;-) ) :

I've activated the up-right corner in compiz to act as "show desktop".

1. I move my mouse to the up-left corner once --> all windows (including firefox's) move away from the desktop
2. I move my mouse to the up-left corner a second time --> all windows (including firefox's) move back to their original position

If firefox was the window with focus before 1 it has focus again after 2, but the awesome bar doesn't work (no suggestion) (exact same symptom as with suspend/resume and screensaver)

If I change focus to another window and come back to firefox it works again. Minimize+maximize also make it works (same thing when caused by screensaver or suspen resume).

There is also a keyboard shortcut to "show desktop" in compiz (ctrl+alt+D on my laptop), but it does *not* trigger the bug after step 1+2.

Besides, I tried with other compiz-related actions ("scale", "expose" and 2 different "application selector") and found none that would cause the problem.

Hope it helps figuring out what's the reason for this bug :-)

No, It's not reproducible with Metacity.

In FF4 the problem has worsened, even the bookmarks button does not work properly because of this bug.
[running 4.0~b8~hg20101128r58314+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1~maverick]

When i click the bookmarks button, the menu drops down, (menu items get highlighted but does not receive focus?) And as soon as I move the pointer to (mouse over) a bookmark folder which leads to a submenu the main menu itself disappears and closes.

This has been a recent problem in FF4.
I believe the problem with the buttons and submenu started since update: firefox-4.0 (4.0~b8~hg20101122r57984+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1~maverick) to 4.0~b8~hg20101123r58015+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1~maverick.
But, it took me a while to realize that it is related to this bug.

[A workaround for the button is, switching to another window and back.]

You have to switch to another virtual desktop (and then back to the firefox window) to have it work again.

Interesting is that the screensaver is not of any importance here. If the screensaver is triggered it does not affect the autocompletion. Only if activating the screensaver also locks your desktop, then autocompletion is not working.

I have Compiz installed. I don't think every ten-second screen lock causes the issue.

Thank you for this tidbit, I had been restarting Firefox to solve the problem. I tried this right now and it work -- I had non-functioning menus and non-functioning awesome bar and switching desktops fixed both problems.

Certain Gtk+-based applications have problems with receiving keystrokes after
the desktop emerges from screensaver or a suspend. Accordingly to at least some
reports, the problems are endemic to Compiz.

Some more observations:
* The problems seem to appear in and after Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) which has
updated Gtk+ to 2.18.
* Gecko and Eclipse both use Gtk+ in intimate ways, adapting it to their own
toolkits.

I dont think so, this bug has been around for a long time before any

But we already have an open compiz task, maybe they have some useful

Stock configuration of browser and desktop effects, a bit of inactivity and you have thousands of your users completely dumbfounded wtf just happened and why that crappy linux can't just work. This is the kind of polish ubuntu was supposed to be about, wasn't it?
That particular bug lived through what, at least 3 different releases? and i won't be surprised to see it in natty again. The only hope is that firefox 4 being much more affected (not just missing suggestions in address bar) will piss off many more users and in return it will force some action.

Third, I can always fix the problem by pressing 'alt-Tab' twice.

Fourth, I frequently (but not always) find that when I alt-Tab, the Update Manager has popped under my firefox session.

Fifth, this also happens with less frequency to LyX. Except in LyX, I can't enter any text anywhere until I alt-Tab twice.

When Firefox is running for a while the drop down boxes (file, edit, history etc.) do not work as they should. The new Bookmarks button and the Firefox tap area do the same thing. When one is clicked and I try to slide down to pick something the whole thing suddenly vanishes! This works just fine when the program is opened but over time the function is not there.
I also noticed that when typing this reply the spell checker marked a word to check. When I tried to choose the correct spelling the same thing happened. The drop down box vanished.
I renamed mozilla in my home folder to mozillaold and then opened Firefox 4 again.
It did not solve the problem. I just noticed that when typing this reply the spell checker marked a word to check. When I tried to choose the correct spelling the same thing happened. The drop down box vanished.

If I have another instance of FF open and switch between the two the drop down boxes act as they should.

It doesn't matter weather the laptop goes to sleep or not I have found.

If I minimize FF to the lower panel and then maximize it form the panel then drop down boxes in FF act as they should.

If I leave FF in the background with another application in front with the focus on it I can switch back to FF and the drop down boxes work as they should.

I have also noticed that the menu drop down for bookmarks does not show folder icons just a blank space before the folder name. The other single bookmarks have an icon before the name.

If I turn on the bookmarks sidebar the folder icons show there.

Thanks, Bob.

Natty uses a newer version of compiz (.9 something) that isn't affected by this. The bug you are experiencing is probably unrelated to this one.

I noticed it too on Natty. After a screen-lock, the address bar in some "new tab" windows do not receive keyboard focus (I have focus-follow-mouse, but even clicking on the address is not useful).

Is quite difficult to reproduce, but it's easier if you have various firefox windows (each with several tab) in different viewports. Doing a bit of iconize-hide-unmaximize and viewport switching usually triggers the problem.

I noticed this only recently. Maybe a firefox-5 update regression?

SRoesgen (s-roesgen) wrote :

Yep,

noticed the return of the problems, too. Firefox 5.0 very often loses keyboard focus if I have more than one Firefox window opened (no matter how many tabs I opened within the windows).

Interestingly, the problems are now more grave than before. When I lose the keyboard focus, the old tricks do not work anymore. When I change to another virtual desktop/workspace and then change back to the one on which I have opened the window the problem still exists and I still have no focus.

Btw.: I noticed a second before that I do not only lose the keyboard focus, but also I cannot click on any flash video (like, for instance, those on youtube). There is no reaction to mouseclicks.

There are only two possible workaround to regain keyboard focus (or a correctly working Firefox Window ):

1) Close Firefox completely and then reopen the windows. So I let sessionmanger handle this and I have to hope that all windows, on which I had been working, will open correctly.

2) The second solution is somewhat strange. I can open a new Firefox window, in addition to those which I have already opened. This new window will -- certainly -- get the keyboard focus. But then I can change to the original Firefox window which displayed the focus issues and there the keyboard focus works again as well.

It should be said that in all cases I recently encountered I lost the focus in ONE of the Firefox windows not in all of them. So I was able to type into window A (no matter in which tab is was working) but somehow Firefox windows B lost its keyboard focus and later one it won't regain the focus.

I suffered from this bug on Maverick, however, it disappeared for a couple of days after I updated to Oneiric. Now it's there again, not sure what triggered it. I can also confirm that it often starts with the URL drop down box flickering for a fraction of a second before vanishing altogether. Auto-complete within the browser is also affected. I wonder if I caused this bug by changing some settings in CSSM since nobody has reported anything here for Oneiric.

The symptom of the bug is that in Firefox URL autocompletion, the list of suggestions immediately vanishes when it is about to show up and that all sorts of menus vanish at the moment when I try to move the mouse over them. For example I click on FILE, a menu shows up, I move the mouse to the menu, it vanishes. VERY frustrating. Sometimes using hotkeys helps, but by far not everything works without mouse. According to this bug discussion, the problem might be the Z window stacking of compiz messing up and getting fixed by being reset using the minimize-restore or focus-something-else workarounds.
