I assumed this was due to some idiosyncrasy in my install because I've kept it alive for a while and I have all kinds of weird stuff installed.
However, my new job hooked me up with another laptop and I did a completely fresh install of 10.04 from the normal live cd and aside from installing xampp, vim, some versioning tools and ubuntu-restricted-extras it has nothing unusual on it. The problem exists there too.
I did not experience this problem before 10.04.
Both laptops are HP, so I thought that might have something to do with it.
I at first assumed that it was due to my older laptop getting hot, but I noted as others have that it is not a problem in Windows.
One of the machines is using the proprietary nvidia driver, the other is using the open source ati driver.
