Unfortunately it looks like Samba4 is accidentally being installed by some people who are looking for the stable version of Samba (Samba 4 is still experimental, see the package description). I wonder if this is the case, and if so, how this is happening?

I'm working on backporting this fix to precise - that seems useful anyway. Even with that, the server side of Samba 4 is still experimental and the version in precise will soon be obsolete.

I have 12.04 lts installed and since the last batch of updates it's been
running stable with no system errors. Yay! :)

So, I believe this case can be closed out. Thanks for the assistance.

Thanks for the info. If this is the case, it's because Samba4 is either
in the distro of 12.04, or was part of an update download. I know for

Hi!

I uninstalled samba4, but Ubuntu 12.04 automatically suggest:

The program 'samba' is currently not installed. You can install it by
typing:
sudo apt-get install samba4

Shouldn't this be fixed in the repositories?

Thanks,
V.

I never touched the standard installation of samba. At least IIRC I never
even called "sudo apt-get install samba"...

No, that is correct. The "samba" package does not provide a "samba"
binary of any sort. Although I guess it does add to the confusion.

Since I uninstalled samba4 and ran an update, my problems seem to have

The tool that suggests packages to install is called command-not-found.
How did you end up getting this suggestion? I tried smbd on a precise
system without samba was installed and just samba was suggested.

But command-not-found does recommend installing samba4 if you just type
samba at a command prompt and that should be fixed.

As for me, I simply upgraded from Oneiric. I believe the upgrade routine upgrades to samba4 automatically, or tries.

no - it's the server not the workstation that's the issue. Make sure you assign it to the right domain.

Dear Jelmer,

the problem is, that not the stable vesrsion, but samba4 is coming, when
you want to use, or install from software center, for example:

The program 'samba' is currently not installed. You can install it by
typing:
apt-get install samba4
root@lleho-MSI-NOTEBOOK-VR630:/home/lleho#

that is, while "some peaple" install it...

Note: In my case I had to try installing the unstable samba4 package because I can't access any shared network resorces on the desktop from any ones laptop over the local network and this is still the case today. This was working fine in Oneric before the upgrade to Precise. Note: the desktop can access shared folders from other computers that are running older distributions such as 10.04 and 11.04 even with the currently broken samba problems in Precise.

Question:
1.) How can I upgrade to the samba4 4.0.0~alpha19+dfsg1-7 fix that was released?

By upgrading to Ubuntu quantal (12.10).

Changed in samba4 (Ubuntu Precise):
status: In Progress → Fix Committed

Not sure, what need to be done to move it to -proposed so more people could be able to test it.

Hi Daviey,

It was waiting for approval to land in -proposed for a couple of weeks, and after that it was rejected (by one of the archive admins, according to the Launchpad email I received). The e-mail didn't have any information as to why they rejected it and I didn't hear from any of the admins. After asking around on IRC a couple of times without result, I gave up on the SRU. Hi Jelmer,

The SRU upload for this has a couple of issues, unfortunately:

 - The .changes file was generated on Debian, not on Ubuntu, so the LP bug references are missing. We need this to be generated on Ubuntu for the SRU tracking process to work. I would reupload to fix this myself, except:
 - The switch from setoption.pl to setoption.py does not look like an SRU-appropriate minimal change for this bug. If there is a reason that the .py version needs to be used instead of the .pl version, please document that here in the bug; otherwise, please stick with the .pl implementation and add the perl-modules dependency instead which AIUI is needed for this script to work.

Also, please update the bugs referenced in the changelog to include the information required by <https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates#Procedure>.

I updated to new kernel.

Samba4 was installed.

Received the "setoption.pl is not executable" error.

Removed samba4.

Installed samba (apt-get install samba)

When I issue "samba" in terminal, it returns: Samba is not installed, run "apt-get install samba4".

When I run "apt-get install samba" it says samba IS installed.

The two processes tied to samba are running on my system.

Shared folders do not appear on my LAN.

So the following worked for me: (Ubuntu 12.04)

Purge Samba install:

sudo apt-get remove --purge samba

(If Samba 4 is installed, make sure to sudo apt-get remove --purge samba4 also.)

Apt Clean:

sudo apt-get autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean

Update Repos:

sudo apt-get update

Reinstall Samba:

sudo apt-get install samba

Reload Samba configuration:

testparm /etc/samba/smb.conf

I didn't have to, but might also be a good idea to reload the samba services:
sudo services samba restart

This has gotten samba working correctly for me again.

Ok, so I ran apt-get install again. Now I get this error:
ImportError: /usr/local/lib/libpytalloc-util.so.2: version `PYTALLOC_UTIL_2.0.6' not found (required by /usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/samba/param.so)

Can you tell us how to recover from this situation?
Should I just completely remove samba4 and start over? Do I use the Ubuntu libraries or the ones attached to this sighting? I can't believe Canonical would go on for a year without fixing a blatant failure to install a popular package on their "long term support" release...??

Just branching isn't sufficient. You need to rebuild the package as well.
If you have all the prerequisites installed this should be a matter of running
"debuild" to build the packages and then "debi" to install them.

You probably want to install "samba" instead. The samba4 package in precise is
a pre-release and experimental.

The main reason I was interested in samba4 is because it has the active directory which is required by the OpenChange
I see a number of how-to's on the web. I guess I will remove everything and try following one of the guides.

Thank you so much for your time Jelmer.

Just some Chinese guy trying to "make" money. These are the WRONG type of
people to try and rip off, people who have launchpad accounts are probably
quite a bit more intelligent than the average person. NICE TRY!!

I am not an Expert so I don't understand what you write to me. What do I have to do? Do I have a virus. Did someone try to copy my bank's data?
Please answer as soon as possible.

Mario-
What you "must do":
1) Do NOT click on the link in Lehotzky László's post.
2) See if you can report Lehotzky László as a phisher, or a compromised account
3) Tell the admin at autul-amin.my that their website may be compromised

None of us fell for this trick, so we don't know that it is not a virus.
Assuming you use Ubuntu, there are very few viruses for Linux, but JavaScript could do bad things; mostly, steal your online information (password, credit card currently in use).
However, it sounds like a robot that is trying to get another account (you) to enter your password.
If you fell for this, change your password. and any similar passwords.

Warning signs:
autul-amin.my does not have a big reputation.
autul-amin.my has nothing to do with Google docs.
autul-amin.my is not using SSL (https)
Lehotzky László has not contributed much to Launchpad.net

and more; these are ones that are difficult to circumvent

If this issue still exists in supported Ubuntu releases, please re-open this bug or file a new one: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

Changed in samba4 (Ubuntu Precise):
status: Triaged → Invalid

I'm unsure as to why I am receiving this message - I am running 18.04 on
all my platforms, so 14.04 would not apply to me.

Thanks tho.
