Bug Description

Just setting up Ubuntu 12.04.1. Needed to install Samba for my little in house network. The system reported the error during installation. The system decided that this was a bug that needed reporting, I didn't make that decision.

Previous versions of Samba worked just fine on this machine for Ubuntu 10...

If you need any hardware info please advise.

Thank You,
Don Dunsmore
from bug reporting guidelines below:

1. Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Release: 12.04

2. Installed: 4.0.0~alpha18.dfsg1-4ubuntu2
  Candidate: 4.0.0~alpha18.dfsg1-4ubuntu2
  Version table:

        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/universe i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
3. I was working on installing Samba. (actually, the installer downloaded Samba 4)
To use Samba for sharing files on my network.

4. The install program quit. I don't know if Samba will run or not but until I send this in I won't be able to reboot and see if it works. I'll login and let you know if it works anyway.

3/17/2013 Additional information about this bug report....

Samba seems to be working OK. As the bug report states, I was installling the samba4 package when the bug report process auto started so I didn't have time to find out if the software would work or not. Well, it seems to be working. I have one issue, that is I can't log onto the host machine from my windows box. But I think that might be a config problem and not affected by the bug.

The error messages that the installation process generated continue to repeat themselves whenever I install any package, gftp, xsane, etc.... But the packages appear to be installing OK and they run OK. Its like the bug is not in Samba4 but in the installer process. And while its annoying it doesn't appear to be affecting anything...well that I can see. The error messages all come at the end of the process. I'll try to capture them when I next install something. But they look a lot like the ones in the file wilth this report. The process reloads the database and then goes crazy reading something (in the database?) that has words that are readable by people but don't match whatever the software is reading.

I hope this helps clarify...

I tried restarting samba in a terminal window. The error messages seemed to be familiar, like they came from the smb.conf file. Here are the results:

Unknown parameter encountered: "max log size"
Ignoring unknown parameter "max log size"
Unknown parameter encountered: "syslog only"
Ignoring unknown parameter "syslog only"
Unknown parameter encountered: "syslog"

Unknown parameter encountered: "unix password sync"

Unknown parameter encountered: "guest ok"

Not sure why, but Samba doesn't seem to recognize a lot of the parameters in the smb.conf file. Does the install program run samba when its done?
