Thank for the reply. I am still not clear what I should do to rectify
the situation. I have given up on samba some time ago. I am a new user
of Ubuntu, and initially had good communication with an Ubuntu laptop
plus windows machines in my home office, but then, following package
upgrades all communication failed. I no longer have a second Ubuntu
machine, but use windows laptops. I transfer all data between my main
(desktop) Ubuntu computer and desktops )for field use) by means of USB
sticks. The problem at the moment is that some of my GIS software (QGIS
and GDAL) cannot be upgraded because Samba is missing. I do not
understand why.

You probably want the 'samba' package rather than the 'samba4' package.
The 'samba4' package contains the experimental next version of Samba,
and is still fairly broken in the version of Ubuntu that you are
running.

I am unclear how to install just "samba" not "samba4". When I use

apt-get install samba

it automatically tries to install samba4.
