Bug Description

Steps to reproduce: Boot up computer, wait a few minutes, and it freezes. Fresh install of 12.04 64 bit and 12.10 32 bit also freeze. I've used kernels 3.2, 3.5, 3.8, 3.9, 2.6 and 3.0, Fedora also freezes. Oddly, it DOES NOT FREEZE if I am doing something processor intensive, like ripping a DVD or converting video. So whenever I boot up my computer, I have to immediately start ripping. I have tried to ssh into my computer from my wife's, but it is impossible while frozen note, it IS possible when my computer is not frozen.
Memtest shows no errors after running it all night. fsck shows nothing. Happens in unity 2d and unity 3d, guessing it's not compiz.

Steps to resolve: Hold down the power button.

Also, if I don't log in to x and just go straight to console, I still get freezes. No proprietary drivers either. My computer is kept dust free, it is not overheating. I tried noapic, nomodeset, acpi=off, and acpi_apic_instance=2 did not fix it.

Hitting the function button will toggle the light off and on after the freeze, but only in the first few seconds.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I'm unable to ssh to my machine because it's desktop computer and when I use it I do not have physical access to any other machine (I will be able to verify it next week, though).

But... This is the same issue: screen+keyboard freezes, yet e.g. skype works so if I'm connected and speak with someone, I still hear him, can speak, etc.... Just keyboard+screen is hung.

So this is a similar issue - but pretty much the same ;)

Also, please check your /var/log/kern.log*

As for me: I'm using kubuntu (Xorg), no compiz; nvidia proprietary drivers.

I have been having the same issue since the past 3 months. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit on Core-i5 2410 acer timelinex 3830tg. It freezes about once day and the only solution is a hard reboot.

Updating the kernel has not helped either. I generally happens when chrome is running. However it has happened at times when no applications are running as well.

It seem to me that my issue has only been for a few months too. I switched to Ubuntu (on my old pc) and then bought this computer last summer and went on bragging about how flawlessly Ubuntu is and that all my friends should switch (ha ha). It's only been since January or so that I've had this problem.

Ok... a bit of weirdness which I do not have the expertise to interpret. I forgot and left a game running in the background all day and no freeze since I started it. Same issue here. I've found that it happens often (60% of the time) when I open a new tab in chrome or chromium and start typing in the url bar. As I'm typing it will then freeze. All screen output except for mouse is frozen - I can still move my mouse.

Sometimes the screen will freeze and if I wait for 20 seconds or so (haven't actually timed) the screen will flash black and resume.

This issue used to happen maybe twice a week but as of the past few days it has happened at a rate of every 30-60 minutes or so of active use. Sometimes it freezes 20 seconds after start up and sometimes it can run for a few hours first.

I am going to try completely clearing out my browsing history - if I recall correctly chrome does not ever clear the history/trim it and it could potentially be causing the hang up.

I am running a dell latitude e5520.

Btw. I did not experience it on the previous LTS, which shipped with 2.6.x kernel. This feature arrived with kernel from the latest LTS.

Please search for kernel panics in kern.log.

This is almost certainly a kernel bug, not browser, not X (although this one segfaults from time to time as well - a separate problem).

Scott, if you get a freeze but are still able to move your mouse, consider filing another bug report, unless the above has finally solved your problem. When I get a freeze, everything is frozen, no mouse, no keyboard and nothing writes to the hard drive either it seems.

I recently upgraded to Ubunto 12.04LTS and since then observe the same problem. Initially I followd the discussion in <https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/993187>, but it seems to have gone to a dead end.

I would like to share some observations that hopefully help someone else to get closer to the source of this issue. My suspicion is a kernel problem. I kept a terminal with 'tail -f /var/log/syslog' open to see if something unusual happens before the computer freezes. And yes, every time just before the computer freezes, this is what is written en masse to the syslog:

Computer 2 and 3 are laptops with Intel core Duo processors and 2 and 4 GB of ram and have never had this issue. Computer 4 is a laptop with a core 5i and 16GB of ram and I get this issue several times a day. All 4 computers are used by the same person (me) to do the same tasks and have the same programs and settings.

Just as comment #36, I get this freeze very frequently while typing in the URL bar in google chrome.

It probably happens while tying in the URL bar because you frequently type in the URL bar. Not the cause of the problem, just coincidence.

I installed Fedora yesterday and got a freeze within minutes with it too.

As a last resort, I might have to install XP.

I'm glad to see bug heat is rising on this, maybe it will get some attention and be fixed.

Either that or I have bad hardware and nothing can be done at all :(

I think it is very well possible that this is not detected in the same way on every hardware. As far as I can see, the log messages I posted above contain at least some indication for a kernel developer where to look for. I think this is a very hard to locate bug and we should try to collect all possible evidence that might lead to its source.

As an experiment, since by odd chance it seemed to work, I've been setting Thoggen DVD ripper to rip a dvd (the same one over and over) while I'm gone. My wife has confirmed that shortly after the DVD finishes ripping my computer freezes. But never DURING the rip. What the heck does that mean for this bug and my computer???

I (and many others) had the same problem on ubuntu 10 (there is a 200 page thread on ubuntuforums.org about it) and now i have the same problem again after upgrading to 12.04. I tried with kernel 3.2.0-39 and 3.2.0-40 with different versions of the nvidia drivers but the freezes remain.

On ubuntu 10 (Lucid) i "fixed" the problem by setting all window effects to off in gnome/compiz.

Now with 12.04 and running Unity i found a similar setting after installing the Myunity package. It is on the Desktop tab of myunity called "Windows animations" and it's ON by default.

I changed the setting to OFF yesterday and will report back if i experience another freeze...

I have exactly the same problem. Totally *random* crashes. No mouse, No keyboard, No ssh. Nothing at all. But in my case after a while (about 15-30 seconds) it will reboots itself.

I have tried kernel 3.2.x all the way to 3.6.x. Now I'm using 3.5.0-25 which seems to a bit better, but still freezes. But sadly I have been back to windows for 3 months now.

Freezes happens randomly, but many times (not always) it happens after I plays some videos or mp3. Sometimes it happens while the computer is idling (just my firefox running).

I have a legacy system which proves stable under Windows. Asus MB, 2GB ram, Core2Duo, nVidia geforce 7600GT. I'm not running Unity. I use gnome classic.

Sooooooo... after months of wrestling with this, a problem I thought I had ruled out is indeed the problem.

If I unplug my laptop and run it with just the battery, NO FREEZES. Of course the battery will only last so long. But the moment I plug the beast back in, it freezes. I swapped a/c adaptors, power bar and tried a different wall outlet. The jack on the laptop itself doesn't seem to be loose, so I can only conclude that it's something on the motherboard and I think it'd be cheaper to scrap it than to have it fixed.

So, dude, I'm gettin' a Dell. about 150 bucks in Japan, new, for their bottom-of-the-line model. Sigh.

For anyone else suffering random freezes, good luck. I'm going to retire from this thread.

I'm not sure if this helps, but high CPU loads prevent the system freezes.

I am using the Kubuntu machine to control lab equipment over Ethernet (SCPI, low cpu load, some network, a couple of GB memory) . I had regular freezes every 12 to 36 hours. Inserting some random computation (inverting a 16x16 matrix at least once a second) fixed the problem. Uptime is now 11 days and still counting.
