I have tried to ssh into my computer from my wife's, but it is impossible while frozen (note, it IS possible when my computer is not frozen, so from what I have read, this indicates my error is not a GPU hang, correct me if I am wrong :) )
Memtest shows no errors (memtest would not run, except for from a live usb, but I got it covered. No errors).

My computer is kept dust free, it is not overheating.

My computer freezes very, very frequently. I'm using 12.04.02 (32bit, though my computer supports 64 bit, but I had freezes with that too), I've had the same trouble on 12.04.01 and 12.10. I've used kernels 3.2, 3.5 and 3.8, all still have freezing. I'm not sure how to identify the package causing the freezing, but not for a lack of trying. If anyone has any idea, I will cheerfully supply whatever info you need. It's been close to two months I think. :P
When it freezes, the keys do not respond at all, making another tty or using REISUB completely impossible.
It can happen anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours after a boot. Usually while browsing, but that's because I'm usually browsing I think.
The only thing I can do is a hard reset.
No errors).
Happens in unity 2d and unity 3d, guessing it's not compiz.
No proprietary drivers either.
My computer is kept dust free, it is not overheating.
As per another report, I tried noapic and nomodeset, to no avail. acpi=off too. :P acpi_apic_instance=2 did not work better either.

From my reading, I've been looking into this, but to no avail:
joe@Sutarmekeg:~$ sudo grep -i bug /var/log/syslog

My laptop computer freezes very, very frequently. I'm using 12.04.02 32 bit. Fresh install of 12.04 64 bit and 12.10 32 bit also freeze. I've used kernels 3.2, 3.5, 3.8 and 3.9, as well as 2.6 and 3.0, for good measure. All still have this random freeze. If anyone has any idea, I will cheerfully supply whatever info you need. It's been close to two months I think. :P

When it freezes, the keys do not respond at all, opening another tty or using REISUB completely impossible.
It can happen anywhere from a few seconds to a few hours after a boot. Usually while browsing, but that's because I'm usually browsing I think.
The only thing I can do is a hard reset.
I have tried to ssh into my computer from my wife's, but it is impossible while frozen (note, it IS possible when my computer is not frozen, so from what I have read, this indicates my error is not a GPU hang, correct me if I am wrong :) )
Memtest shows no errors.
Happens in unity 2d and unity 3d, guessing it's not compiz.
Also, if I don't log in to x and just go straight to console, I still get freezes.
No proprietary drivers either.
My computer is kept dust free, it is not overheating.
Significant or not I have no idea, but my desktop icons appear in a different position after rebooting.
As per another report, I tried noapic and nomodeset, to no avail. acpi=off too. :P acpi_apic_instance=2 did not work better either.
I discovered that hitting the function button will toggle the light off and on after the freeze, at least for a short time.
Thanks gang. I am a new Ubuntu user and I love it, despite this grievous problem. |

I swear that I did not have this problem when I first got this computer (second hand in August 2012) but seems to have come up after. But I have no idea what update has caused the trouble as I have tried several different kernels.
Steps to reproduce: Boot up computer, wait a few minutes.
Steps to resolve: Hold down the power button.
What happens next: Boot up the computer, wait a few minutes. Then it happens again.
Oddly, it DOES NOT FREEZE if I am doing something processor intensive, like ripping a DVD or converting video. So whenever I boot up my computer, I have to immediately start ripping. A bit of a pain.
When it freezes, the keys do not respond at all, opening another tty or using REISUB completely unpossible.
It usually happens within ten minutes, it seems to have gotten worse.
The only thing I can do is a hard reset.

Memtest shows no errors after running it all night.
Hard disk is still fine, though I'm sure my frequent hard reset will shorten its lifespan.

Hitting the function button will toggle the light off and on after the freeze, but only in the first few seconds.
I'm not that experienced with linux, but I have suffered with this bug for months now. Anything from the logs that looks like it might be the source of the problem I have googled, tried various solutions that helped other people with similar problems but mine persists.
Thanks gang. I am a new Ubuntu user and I love it, despite this grievous problem. |
