Sooooooo... after months of wrestling with this, a problem I thought I had ruled out is indeed the problem.
If I unplug my laptop and run it with just the battery, NO FREEZES. Of course the battery will only last so long. But the moment I plug the beast back in, it freezes. I swapped a/c adaptors, power bar and tried a different wall outlet. The jack on the laptop itself doesn't seem to be loose, so I can only conclude that it's something on the motherboard and I think it'd be cheaper to scrap it than to have it fixed.
So, dude, I'm gettin' a Dell. about 150 bucks in Japan, new, for their bottom-of-the-line model. Sigh.
For anyone else suffering random freezes, good luck. I'm going to retire from this thread.
