Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

hi Kees I already changed this 5 hours before you - and said that it was accidentaly

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please answer these questions:

 * Is this reproducible?
 * If so, what specific steps should we take to recreate this bug?

This will help us to find and resolve the problem.

strangely it isn't looks like this has been patched during RC possibly - thx for asking me :)

Hmm... I still have this problem. Can't copy text from empathy.

I've the same problem on Ubuntu 11.04, this not fixed at all !

Ben Gamari (bgamari) wrote :

Indeed this is still not fixed.

Paul Natsuo Kishimoto (khaeru) wrote :

There is another report at bug #580602 with more information. Since this report is older, I'll mark the other one as a duplicate.

To be clear, this is not fixed.

Dario Bertini (berdario) wrote :

I don't think this is the same bug

the newer bug happened after september 2010, this bug has been reported by only one person in october 2009, after which this problem was absent

if so, it's correct that this bug is flagged as "fix released"... but otherwise only a bug triager would be able to change it

nonetheless, I added the supposed upstream bug... but now the information on the status is quite incoherent

Why is this marked as fixed if it's not fixed?

Alex Tasin (alextasin) wrote :

in oneiric is not fixed

tags: added: x64

Fixed "x64" tag to "amd64" (the correct architecture name for any 64-bit x86-compatible PC or Mac) and added names of all the Ubuntu releases in the duplicates.

One note. When you select the text you want to copy, the selected text is dark-gray with light-grey selection background (instead of white on orange, like everywhere in ubuntu). So maybe the problem is that selected text is somehow not active, similar to non-active window.

I see that the bug is "in progress", hope that the fix will enter precise-updates.

It is very annoying. Please change the importance to normal.

Nicholas Shatokhin (robotex) wrote :

I think importance must be a high, because it creates big difficults in work.

Still a problem in Precise. Please increase priority as others have said above.
Ctrl+c is pretty basic, and this being broken is an easy way to scare people away from ubuntu.

This bug has been annoying me even since I became an Ubuntu user. It's a serious problem that affects my daily work - I communicate a lot over IM copy/pasting information regularly.

Please fix!

DisDis (igor-demyanov) wrote :

This is a critical bug.
It's very annoying people or empathy for robots?

Please fix!

I can confirm it in Ubuntu 12.04 (up-to-date):
apt-cache policy empathy
  Version table:
 *** 0
        500 precise-updates/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     3.4.1-0ubuntu1 0
        500 precise/main i386 Packages

When I highlight text from a past message (either sent or received) Ctrl+C is not working. The bug is reproducible in all themes.
Both Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V combinations are working in the edit area.
Right-click an selecting Copy does work, but it's a painful process.

Empathy is great, but I find this issue very annoying and a major usability problem.

Please fix it. Thank you!

Nicholas Shatokhin (robotex) wrote :

This (and not this only, all shortcuts) don't work if current keyboard layout is non Latin.

Tony Pursell (ajpursell) wrote :

What *does* work is this:

- Highlight text from a past message

- Move to message box

- Press middle button (scroll wheel on most modern mice)

I don't know what this behaviour depends on, but it is the alternative method of Copy and Paste in Ubuntu.

Fred (folivier-f0) wrote :

This bug is this on for me as well, Ubuntu 12.04 (and 11.10). I experience this problem since more than a year. It might sounds like minor issue, but it's actually a very big issue usability-wise.

I've had hundreds of times when I though I copy-paste properly and I didn't, because of that bug. It would be greatly appreciated if someone can investigate it and fix it.

Thanks a lot!

This is still present under 12.10 beta 1:

$ lsb_release -rd && apt-cache policy empathy
Description: Ubuntu quantal (development branch)
Release: 12.10
  Installed: 3.6.0-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 3.6.0-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 3.6.0-0ubuntu1 0
        500 quantal/main amd64 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

I also found bug #971022, which seems to be the same webkit issue referenced from the upstream GNOME bug.
