Bug Description
I have the wireless Kobo and have been using Calibre almost since I first got it. I have just updated to the latest version (0.8.9) just in case that helps. My operating system's Windows 7
Lately, my Kobo hasn't been processing new content. I reset it and tried again. Now I'm getting an error message in Calibre and even the pre-loaded books aren't showing up in the device tab.
I tried deleting and loading the images folder and KoboReader.sqlite as that corrected someone elses problem, that looked like it might be similar.
Here's the remainder of the error message:
calibre, version 0.8.9

I have the same problem.
Version 0.8.8 worked fine, version 0.8.9 does not.
I also have a Kobo Touch - both 0.8.8 and 0.8.9 work fine with it.

Try upgrading to the latest firmware or run in debug mode and send me
the output. I won't have access to my Wifi model until this evening.

Hi Tim,
Thanks for coming back to me so quickly.
I've just reconnected my Kobo to try your suggestions. Still nothing showing in the device memory, I'm not sure why I keep thinking that might change! Tried to send a book to the Kobo, didn't work (what a surprise). Tried to call the Kobo helpdesk yesterday. Couldn't stay on hold for long enough!!
Debug mode gave me the following first error message:

Was this the wifi version? If so it should be at version 1.9.x and
the database version should be 14. If you nitice what you posted it
is lower that that. Regardless there is an issue that I will resolve
for next week at the latest.

Kovid and I committed fixes that will be in the next release. The best thing for affected users to do is to upgrade to the latest firmware for their device.

I have the original 'non-wifi' Kobo that has worked well with Calibre since I got it last year. I upgraded to 8.9 and got the same message. Should I wait till Friday for the next release or uninstall 8.9 and reinstall an earlier version? The last download that I saved to My Downloads was 8.4 My OS is WIndows XP.
Thanks,

I've just updated the firmware in my Kobo and the bug has disappeared. Also, I can again see the items on my device. These had disappeared prior to the update. Thanks for the recommendation.

I´ve the same problem on my PC with windows 7 last night. My kobo e-reader was without the latest firmware.
Just now, after upgrade it from 1.7.4 (r21889, dec 6, 2010) to 1.9 (r25373, mar 29, 2011), it work like a charm.
Suggest connect your kobo to your Mac (usb cable) and (using the kobo software), sync this (it updates the firmware).

I think this is the problem I am having, but I am not sure. I have a newish computer and my life has gone downhill from there lol
I have windows 7 and I believe all of my stuff is updated to the current version. last week I used calibre to add some books to my kobo and it worked. Last night I plugged the kobo into the pc to charge and it said updating, and a bunch of my books disappeared and now calibre gives me an error. I really do not know what I am doing, so bear with me please.

You will need to do a factory reset. Make sure that you are not using

I just updated new software on Kobo and have the 8.34 version of Calibre. I did a basic reset of Kobo. I lost some books from reader. When I add a book it adds it 6 times. Some books I try to add do get added at all. When I start Calibre it says it recognizes device, but when I search device library nothing shows up. Any help would be appreciated.
I get the following message:
calibre, version 0.8.34
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

Did you try the factory reset from the menus on the Kobo? I had a similar
problem a while ago, with an older version of Calibre and it worked
perfectly. I haven't had any trouble since.

Error communicating with device - Kobo -

Fix Released
Bug description:
I have the wireless Kobo and have been using Calibre almost since I
first got it. I have just updated to the latest version (0.8.9) just
in case that helps. My operating system's Windows 7
Lately, my Kobo hasn't been processing new content. I reset it and
tried again. Now I'm getting an error message in Calibre and even the
pre-loaded books aren't showing up in the device tab.
I tried deleting and loading the images folder and KoboReader.sqlite
as that corrected someone elses problem, that looked like it might be
similar.
Here's the remainder of the error message:
calibre, version 0.8.9
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

I followed the directions on the link below, also to no avail. This
is the information from the debug:

Thanks. I did a factory reset. Added books to Kobo-at first they didn't show up. Turned device off then on again and they showed up. Hope this works.
Changing the component for this bug.
