This bug was already reported here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=567716

As a workaround, install the package texlive-base. After that tex-common will install as well.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Maverick Meerkat.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please do steps 1 and 2 of the SRU Procedure [1] to bring the need to a developer's attention.

I found out how to fix this. Open a terminal and type
"sudo apt-get remove texlive"
"sudo apt-get remove tex-common"
"sudo apt-get install tex-common"
"sudo apt-get install texlive"

that's what worked for me so good luck to anyone with this problem.

Would you mind fixing this bug in Lucid? The patch is rather trivial and affects only the debian maintainer scripts.

Postinst gets/expects a wrong error code from dpkg-query. This has been fixed by the debian developers in revision 4577 of the tex-common package (closes: #571334).

As Lucid will be supported for quite a while, it would be nice to see this bug fixed (although there are various workarounds). You can either use this patch or a more recent version from svn.
