A workaround for those who manually try to install texlive-binaries or any other application depending on it:

Remove the errorneous packages, then install tex-common first, followed by texlive-binaries and finally the application you are trying to install.

For me this was fixed by installing texlive-base as
"No packages found matching texlive-base."
indicates.

Changed in tex-common (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Low
status: New → Confirmed

Same problem with fresh installation of ubuntu 10.04 i686.
Installed today, updated and then tried to install some packages (perhaps vim-latexsuite).
How Philip Muškovac said I installed texlive-base and everything seems to work now.
