Bug Description

Hi,
Since 14.04, there is an issue with hplip, it is complaining about the black cartridge and color cartridge status is "failed".(F4100 series)
Same issue on another system under 14.04 (C3100 series).
Worked fine below migration from 12.04.
Driver 3.14.6 don't resolve the issue.
Regards.

Initially, after the installation of 3.14.6, i got the same error.
So I tried
hp-doctor
and after hp-check i got no errors or warning.
I removed my F4100 printer from hplip-gui
I reinstalled it
I stopped IDLE and restarted it and the printer returned active.

I have to test it more, but it seems to work.

Same problem here with my Deskjet F2180 all-in-one.
It seems to be a problem with hplip as the printer still works if I ask it to print anything from, for example, libreoffice in both black and colour.
hplip just will not see the colour cartridge, nor will it print the Test pge from the first tab of hp-toolbox.

I have just tried the most recent hplip version, 3.14.10 direct from the website and installed that. I have run hp-doctor and hp-check with no problems noted and final output says:-

but as soon as I try to look at anything about the printer in hp-toolbox I get the error again, and bancaldo's trick in post above does not work

The error in hplip toolbox is

"Cartridge not latched Wed Dec 17 11:01:19 2014 (most recent) 1032 Please correct the problem and try again."

The printer still works fine except if trying to action anything through hplip-toolbox, eg "Print test page" which gives
"Unable to connect with printer Deskjet_F2100. Please check the printer and try again."

I have exactly the same problem with this printer when attached to a laptop with Lubuntu 14.04.1 64bit system, so it is not specific to my main desktop machine.

Thank you for providing hp-levels output.
hp-levels is stating the cartridge is not installed. It could be parsing the output incorrect or the device might be sending incorrect information. We are analyzing the issue.
Can you provide some more information on this.
1. Is there any cartridge indicator (or) level indicator on device ?
2. Can you remove the cartridge and re-insert it and check if 'hp-levels' command return same error ?

Rgds,
Goutam

ajgreeny (ajg-charlbury) wrote :

No, there is no level indicator on the device itself, and I am not certain whether or not there is a button combination that will allow it to print-out ink levels; I will investigate and report back.
I have removed the cartridges, (both of them) and reinserted them, but there is no difference in the output of either hp-levels or hp-check.

hp-check output related to that F2100 printer is:-

Deskjet_F2100
-------------
Type: Printer
Device URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_F2100_series?serial=CN7BF4Q0MC04TK
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/Deskjet_F2100.ppd

Printer status: printer Deskjet_F2100 is idle. enabled since Wed 10 Dec 2014 14:00:30 GMT
Communication status: Good

This seems to suggest all is good; it is just the hp-toolbox that has the problem, and as I said before, the printer still works with no difficulty, printing both black and colour.
Using the printer's self check print-out by holding "Cancel" and pressing "Colour copy" works fine with no problems or errors showing and all three colours print perfectly.

One thought: I use compatible cartridges, and have always done so, with never any problems, and until I updated my distro from Xubuntu 12.04 to Xubuntu 14.04 by a clean installation, not upgrade, the printer was working well and hp-toolbox found it with good ink levels showing as they should; it is 14.04 that has the problem.

It used to work fine, however after some update of hplig the same issue happens for me. The error code 1032, cartridge not latched does not let HP setup work. I can print and use the scanner.

I also have hplip 3.15.6 direct from the website and the "cartridge not latched" error that was always appearing is now not being seen.
However, the Actions tab now takes a very long time to show anything, though it does eventually appear, and the Supplies tab now stays empty for my USB attached Deskjet F2180 but works fine for my wife's wifi attached Photosmart 6520.

I attach the output of hp-check -t as a txt file below.
