No, there is no level indicator on the device itself, and I am not certain whether or not there is a button combination that will allow it to print-out ink levels; I will investigate and report back.
I have removed the cartridges, (both of them) and reinserted them, but there is no difference in the output of either hp-levels or hp-check.

hp-check output related to that F2100 printer is:-

Deskjet_F2100
-------------
Type: Printer
Device URI: hp:/usb/Deskjet_F2100_series?serial=CN7BF4Q0MC04TK
PPD: /etc/cups/ppd/Deskjet_F2100.ppd
PPD Description: HP Deskjet f2100 Series, hpcups 3.14.10
Printer status: printer Deskjet_F2100 is idle. enabled since Wed 10 Dec 2014 14:00:30 GMT
Communication status: Good

This seems to suggest all is good; it is just the hp-toolbox that has the problem, and as I said before, the printer still works with no difficulty, printing both black and colour.
Using the printer's self check print-out by holding "Cancel" and pressing "Colour copy" works fine with no problems or errors showing and all three colours print perfectly.

One thought: I use compatible cartridges, and have always done so, with never any problems, and until I updated my distro from Xubuntu 12.04 to Xubuntu 14.04 by a clean installation, not upgrade, the printer was working well and hp-toolbox found it with good ink levels showing as they should; it is 14.04 that has the problem.
