Bug Description

My wireless usb stick, which is identified as

ID 07d1:3c0f D-Link System AirPlus G DWL-G122 Wireless Adapter(rev.E) [Ralink RT2870]

and has been supported since Ubuntu 10.10 (I think) works well with driver module rt2870sta - but only after I blacklisted module rt2800usb. Maybe the need for manual blacklisting can be removed?

I got the same problem after upgrading to natty.
Got high latency problem and also the link quality is low (as reported by iwconfig) with rt2800usb.
With rt2870sta it works fine.
Workaround: I've tried disabling power save mode and it really improves latency issue:
iwconfig wlan0 power off
but I don't know how to set it up on boot. Anyway blacklist rt2800usb works.

The staging driver rt2870sta has reached the end of its live and will not be there anymore in oneiric. Actually both remaining Ralink staging drivers have been deleted in kernel 3.0 (which is likely the oneiric release kernel).

Newer generation Ralink hardware is now supposed to be supported by the rt2x00 project's drivers rt2800pci and rt2800usb. Among the remaining bugs in natty with rt2870 hardware + rt2800usb driver are a firmware bug (see bug 762987)and indeed powersaving related bugs. Both should already be fixed in oneiric.

Please test with a current oneiric live system whether there are Ralink related bugs remaining.

Seems power save mode was just fixed for PCI then in 2.6.39 so far. I
looked at the commits[1] and found this one[2]:

>rt2x00: Add autowake support for USB hardware

If that is what fixes the bug in power save mode then kernel 3.0
should work. Could you test with 3.0-rc1[3]?

That does seem related, but I can't test it right now because for some
reason the 64bit live CD refuses to load on my system, and there isn't a
32bit 3.0v on the ppa. Plus this will require full install of oneiric on my
working system which complicate things.
I will test it as soon as possible.

Please help testing the following planned update and post your results in bug 762987:

Install the testing firmware package from http://people.canonical.com/~sforshee/lp762987/linux-firmware_1.52~lp762987v201106061858_all.deb - then unload and reload your driver module so that the testing firmware is actually loaded into the hardware. Don't forget that step. Always replace rt2800usb with the name of the driver module you are testing:
sudo modprobe -rv rt2800usb
sudo modprobe -v rt2800usb

Now test your driver with this new firmware. The more/longer the better. Tell us if you see any regressions - anything that does not work that does work with the old firmware?

Run the following two commands and post their output so that we have enough information about what you have tested:
1)
grep CODENAME /etc/lsb-release && uname -rm && lspci -vvnn | grep Network && lspci -k | grep Network --after-context 3 | grep use && md5sum /lib/firmware/rt2860.bin && md5sum /lib/firmware/rt2870.bin

2) (Again replace rt2800usb with the driver you are testing):
modinfo rt2800usb | grep -i -E "filename|firmware|srcversion"

Thanks

In addition to the above regression test could you please try the rt2800usb with that new firmware and tell us if it works for you. You might have to blacklist the rt2870sta and shutdown and boot.

Thanks

Thanks assaf,
seems from your tests that for your system the new firmware works about as well as the old:
rt2800usb

DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty

My command did not quite work as expected. Should have been:
grep CODENAME /etc/lsb-release; uname -rm; lspci -vvnn | grep Network; lspci -k | grep Network --after-context 3 | grep use; md5sum /lib/firmware/rt2860.bin; md5sum /lib/firmware/rt2870.bin

Otherwise grep will return FALSE for if it finds nothing and the rest does not get executed. So the md5sums are not printed. No matter.

It does seem to work better then the old one (the downgraded version?).
But I still get delays and things generally seems less stable, overall I
think the rt2870sta is preforming better then both.
This are the md5sum of the new version.

Tried to install the new V3.0 and it performing about same as in the tests I
did for the downgraded firmware so no regression but not improved either.

So you do still see those long ping times in power save mode with
kernel 3.0-rc2? (with the new firmware

The stats are the same as the test of the new firmware:

PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_req=1 ttl=64 time=4.22 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_req=2 ttl=64 time=4.27 ms
64 bytes from 192.168.1.1: icmp_req=3 ttl=64 time=4.17 ms

Those are better then kernel 2.6.39 with the old firmware tested with orieno
alpha (which you see above) and very similar to what I get in the test of
the "new" firmware on natty (see text output).

I did some testing today. Sorry for the delay.

I noticed that rt2800usb actually occasionally works on Natty with rt2870sta blacklisted. I did need to remove an reinsert the usb DWL-G122 rev.E USB stick a few times to get the net actually up, and the connection seems less stable than with rt2870sta. Output of Wolfgang's commands:

DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty
2.6.38-8-generic x86_64
7f55011396eff4983f26bb7dd7339fb3 /lib/firmware/rt2860.bin

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2800usb.ko
firmware: rt2870.bin
srcversion: 52008801035C9FD38B91EC7

I then tried the 1.52~lp762987v201106061858 firmware:

DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty
2.6.38-8-generic x86_64
75a1da3caa0b1c95e81dfba207f834c6 /lib/firmware/rt2860.bin

firmware: rt2870.bin
srcversion: 52008801035C9FD38B91EC7

I did not notice any particular differences to the normal 1.52 firmware. It still takes a few tryings to get the net up, ssh is laggy and network radio streaming keeps breaking. Some random ping statistics with iwconfig wlan1 power on

248 packets transmitted, 248 received, +8 duplicates, 0% packet loss, time 247332ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.282/69.985/2035.413/290.045 ms, pipe 3

and iwconfig wlan1 power off

196 packets transmitted, 195 received, +3 duplicates, 0% packet loss, time 195217ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.993/714.880/4044.836/1125.013 ms, pipe 5

(something near 4 ms seems typical for power on and a bit over 1 ms for power off, when pings are stable for a moment).

I also quickly tried the 32bit Oneiric live image. I didn't need to remove the usb stick to get the net up, but I think ping gave about the same results as with Natty, although I'm afraid I didn't take note of them anywhere.

Hi Jussi,
thanks for testing.

Did the oneiric live image you tested have the kernel 3.0? I see that
kernel 3.0 was published in oneiricon 2011-06-09[1]. So if the live
image was fairly recent it would have it.

It might be easier for you to do testing with an installed 3.0-rc
mainline kernel[2]. The 32 bit version is available now. What about
the lag in ssh and radio stream breaking that you mention with the
natty kernel?

I don't see any patches upstream beyond "rt2x00: Add autowake support
for USB hardware" (see comment 5) that have a good chance of fixing
issues with power saving on. Anyway your ping average looks even worse
with power saving off, so this does not look like a power saving
issue.

Sorry, the oneiric image I used previously was an old one, downloaded on 2011-06-03. I downloaded a new one today and tried again. Didn't plan on postponing my reply that long. Anyway, it would be a good time to test your issues with a current daily compat-wireless driver as there are some new patches in it and still time to get stuff into oneiric. So, if you have time, could you try compiling the latest daily compat-wireless tarball from:
http://wireless.kernel.org/download/compat-wireless-2.6/
e.g. today this is:
compat-wireless-2011-08-05.tar.bz2
Instructions are here:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Download#Selecting_your_driver
but basically it is as simple as (in a terminal in the directory of the upacked driver):
./scripts/driver-select rt2x00
make
sudo make install
sudo make unload
sudo modprobe -v rt2800pci

Hi Wolfgang, good to hear from you.
I've followed your instructions with the latest version of compact-wireless
tar ball i.e. 2011-08-06 and the current natty kernel (2.6.38) and so far
it's working great. The ping results are the best I had so far with our
tests, and it seems very consistent and stable so far. I'll try to work with
it and update if anything goes wrong.
Thanks for your help, If you need anything else feel free to contact me.

Anything in the logs (dmesg and /var/log/syslog) when things go bad?

Also, your last ping statistic is over only 3 pings. It may be better to let it run longer.

Where those bad results with power saving on? Contrast standard ping (with power saving on) with a much higher traffic ping (200KB/s) to _your_ router:
sudo ping -i 0.005 -s 1000 -c 1000 192.168.1.1

I think the first test was incorrect because I used the sta driver and the
unload command (wluload) did not remove it so I got both driver working
which means it's useless.

I didn't find anything unusual in the logs and yes I was testing it with
standard power saving on.

when running 1000 pings this parameters to my router, I get:

sudo ping -q -i 0.005 -s 1000 -c 1000 192.168.1.1

That doesn't look that bad. What are the biggest issues with the rt2800usb driver left now? What is the actual data rate you get from iperf or some other speed measurement tool. From the ping values it looks like it should work well for everyday use, even if it is somewhat slower than the rt2870sta?

Have you tried blacklisting rt2870sta and going through a shutdown - boot cycle before testing to check against interference of some kind?

I assume you have the new firmware: (md5sum)

No that was the old firmware and the 2.6.38 kernel which gave us troubles in
the first place. I will try the V3.1 kernel and the new compact wireless
driver and post the results.

Hi Wolfgang, I've tried this config with kernel v3rc7 however when I try to
compile compact-wireless I get the following error:

/home/asaf/compat-wireless-2011-08-08/config.mk:212: "WARNING:
CONFIG_CFG80211_WEXT will be deactivated or not working because kernel was
compiled with CONFIG_WIRELESS_EXT=n. Tools using wext interface like
iwconfig will not work. To activate it build your kernel e.g. with
CONFIG_LIBIPW=m."
make -C /lib/modules/3.0.0-0300rc7-generic/build
M=/home/asaf/compat-wireless-2011-08-08 modules
make: *** /lib/modules/3.0.0-0300rc7-generic/build: No such file or

Ping result (with old compact wireless, new kernel new firmware):

sudo ping -q -i 0.005 -s 1000 -c 1000 192.168.1.1
PING 192.168.1.1 (192.168.1.1) 1000(1028) bytes of data.

Hm, I have iwconfig working here with compat-wireless on current
stable mainline kernel 3.0.1. Could you try that one? Your last ping
test looks good again, but can you tell whether power saving is on or
off without iwconfig?

The first working daily of 3.1.0rc1+ is available in the ubuntu
mainline archive, btw.

Hi,
Tested with oneric beta 1, I believe that's the new compact wireless driver,
and got about the same results as before:

--- 192.168.1.1 ping statistics ---
41 packets transmitted, 38 received, 7% packet loss, time 40062ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.351/4.643/7.198/1.101 ms
test1@ubuntu:~$ uname -a
Linux ubuntu 3.0.0-9-generic #15-Ubuntu SMP Tue Aug 30 14:57:16 UTC 2011
