Sorry, the oneiric image I used previously was an old one, downloaded on 2011-06-03. I downloaded a new one today and tried again. This time the net seemed quite stable, although connecting took longer than I would usually expect, maybe twenty seconds. Ssh was lagless; I didn't install support for mp3 streaming to try that.
