I did some testing today. Sorry for the delay.

I noticed that rt2800usb actually occasionally works on Natty with rt2870sta blacklisted. I did need to remove an reinsert the usb DWL-G122 rev.E USB stick a few times to get the net actually up, and the connection seems less stable than with rt2870sta. Output of Wolfgang's commands:

DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty
2.6.38-8-generic x86_64
7f55011396eff4983f26bb7dd7339fb3 /lib/firmware/rt2860.bin
e4b60f5bb4980a26cbac32be690451d6 /lib/firmware/rt2870.bin

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2800usb.ko
firmware: rt2870.bin
srcversion: 52008801035C9FD38B91EC7

I then tried the 1.52~lp762987v201106061858 firmware:

DISTRIB_CODENAME=natty
2.6.38-8-generic x86_64
75a1da3caa0b1c95e81dfba207f834c6 /lib/firmware/rt2860.bin
36c944c3138125605d28c0a3a1338be9 /lib/firmware/rt2870.bin

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/rt2800usb.ko
firmware: rt2870.bin
srcversion: 52008801035C9FD38B91EC7

I did not notice any particular differences to the normal 1.52 firmware. It still takes a few tryings to get the net up, ssh is laggy and network radio streaming keeps breaking. Some random ping statistics with iwconfig wlan1 power on

248 packets transmitted, 248 received, +8 duplicates, 0% packet loss, time 247332ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.282/69.985/2035.413/290.045 ms, pipe 3

and iwconfig wlan1 power off

196 packets transmitted, 195 received, +3 duplicates, 0% packet loss, time 195217ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.993/714.880/4044.836/1125.013 ms, pipe 5

(something near 4 ms seems typical for power on and a bit over 1 ms for power off, when pings are stable for a moment).

I also quickly tried the 32bit Oneiric live image. I didn't need to remove the usb stick to get the net up, but I think ping gave about the same results as with Natty, although I'm afraid I didn't take note of them anywhere.
