Bug Description

I'm running Jaunty with the latest updates as of today and with linux-restricted-modules on a Toshiba Tecra A10 and gstreamer doesn't seem to produce any sound. I tried running the gstreamer audio test with the following command but I can't hear any sound:

gst-launch-0.10 'audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink'

Of course, I made sure that the sound was turned all the way up to 11!

Is the following command audible? pasuspender -- speaker-test -c2 -Dplughw:0

Here are a few notes from going through the DebuggingSoundProblems wiki page:

1. There is only one sound card listed in /proc/asound/cards
2. I tried the test button under System > Preferences > Sound for the available playback devices and no sound

Disregard my previous comment, I confused this with a different bug. This one of course already has the alsa info.

I'm sorry for posting my configuration without introducing myself first.

Anyway, I have this bug as well on a Dell Latitude D820. On a clean install, the sound works perfectly, but after the first round of updates after a clean install (without installing anything else), the Volume Control applet, as well as anything both GNOME and gstreamer related, is broken, with identical error messages to those posted above. However, sound still functions normally in all other instances---for example, Songbird, which uses gstreamer but not GNOME, works, as does VLC on both Default and ALSA output. In addition, running 'pasuspender -- speaker-test -c2 -Dplughw:0' produces sound. However, Rhythmbox, Totem, and the Sound Test buttons in the Sound configuration menu return failure.

Having the same problem (also on a Toshiba Tecra A10-14Q PTSB1E, I found the following modification working for me: in

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

I added a line

options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba

and rebooted ... at least I can hear the system sounds and play mp3, ogg and video with sound ...

No, the above tip didn't make any difference for me. As I said, it's only the GNOME volume control and GNOME Gstreamer applications that I have had trouble with so far. Anything else that uses Gstreamer or Pulseaudio works perfectly. I can even open 'pavucontrol' to control the volume of my programs and output volume. Interestingly, thought, when I open the PulseAudio Manager 'paman' and play the test sounds, only the WAV sound 'dialog-question.wav' plays, not any of the OGG ones, although this is probably just due to the fact that Pulseaudio uses Gstreamer to play Ogg files and Gstreamer on GNOME is not functional at the moment. Playing the corresponding files in '/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo' with VLC succeeds, although some of them contain almost no sound content and are only a tiny fraction of a second long.

Hy.
I also have a Toshiba Tecra A10 - 11J and have freshly installed Ubuntu.
Have no sound. Tried to modify on:

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

to add the line:

options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba

as mentioned but I have no right to make any change.
Plz help.

you used sudo (as in sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf)?

Have the same problem too. Adding the options line in alsa-base.conf solved it. Is there any information I should provide for debugging?

Solved with a standard method:

only add the following lines on /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf :

# Lines for the ALC268 audio chipset can works.
options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388
options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=toshiba position_fix=1

The just-released ALSA 1.0.23 may help. From the changelog:

    - ALSA: hda - Remove the COEF setup for ALC267/ALC268
The COEF setup for model=auto seems problematic on some laptops,
resulting in the silent speaker output. Better to disable it for now.
