I'm sorry for posting my configuration without introducing myself first.

Anyway, I have this bug as well on a Dell Latitude D820. On a clean install, the sound works perfectly, but after the first round of updates after a clean install (without installing anything else), the Volume Control applet, as well as anything both GNOME and gstreamer related, is broken, with identical error messages to those posted above. However, sound still functions normally in all other instances---for example, Songbird, which uses gstreamer but not GNOME, works, as does VLC on both Default and ALSA output. In addition, running 'pasuspender -- speaker-test -c2 -Dplughw:0' produces sound. However, Rhythmbox, Totem, and the Sound Test buttons in the Sound configuration menu return failure.
