Having the same problem (also on a Toshiba Tecra A10-14Q PTSB1E, I found the following modification working for me: in
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
I added a line
options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba
and rebooted ... at least I can hear the system sounds and play mp3, ogg and video with sound ...
