No, the above tip didn't make any difference for me. As I said, it's only the GNOME volume control and GNOME Gstreamer applications that I have had trouble with so far. Anything else that uses Gstreamer or Pulseaudio works perfectly. I can even open 'pavucontrol' to control the volume of my programs and output volume. Interestingly, thought, when I open the PulseAudio Manager 'paman' and play the test sounds, only the WAV sound 'dialog-question.wav' plays, not any of the OGG ones, although this is probably just due to the fact that Pulseaudio uses Gstreamer to play Ogg files and Gstreamer on GNOME is not functional at the moment. Playing the corresponding files in '/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo' with VLC succeeds, although some of them contain almost no sound content and are only a tiny fraction of a second long.
