[Dell Inspiron 3593] Ubuntu does not resume (wake up) from suspend

Bug Description

Whenever Ubuntu gets into suspend state, I cannot wake it up.
-Keystrokes start the fans but screen does not turn on and Ubuntu still seems to be suspended because in my teamviewer account the computer is still offline.
-Power button clicks do not help
-I always have to turn off computer by holding power button and then turn it on again.

The only kernel that works is the following: "linux-image-5.0.0-1070-oem-osp1". But with this old kernel I run into different problems.

I have the latest BIOS version from Dell (released 2020-11-27) and the latest updates in Ubuntu 20.04.

I will post logs during suspend and important logs (found in Logs gui tool)

In my case I had a new Dell 17 3793, updated BIOS, and installed Kubuntu 20.04 from a USB stick I created at the time 20.04 was released. If I don't give the install program access to the internet, then wake from suspend suspend works. But if I do give the install program access to the internet, or if I sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade after install, then wake from suspend doesn't work. Using the original 20.04 kernel, 5.4.0-26 works but no later kernels I have tried work.

Further observations on failed wakeup: blank screen with flashing cursor. Caps Lock light does not change. But PrtScr+Ctrl+Alt+REISUB reboots. Ctrl+Alt+F2 or F3 etc and the cursor gives a barely observable flicker. Ctrl+Alt+F1 which should bring up the graphical login screen causes the flashing cursor to disappear, but still blank screen.

Hello Philip or anyone else affected,

We have released a new Focal linux kernel (version 5.4.0-59.65) which contains several bug fixes. Could you please update to this kernel and report whether it fixes the issue?

Thank you.

Hi Bruce,

Thank you for you the test.

We have a test kernel with some fixes that we would appreciate if someone could test it. They can be found at: https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~vilhelm/linux-5.4.0-59.65+lp1909005/amd64/

You would need to install at least:
linux-image-unsigned-5.4.0-59-generic_5.4.0-59.65+lp1909005_amd64.deb
linux-modules-5.4.0-59-generic_5.4.0-59.65+lp1909005_amd64.deb
linux-modules-extra-5.4.0-59-generic_5.4.0-59.65+lp1909005_amd64.deb

Still no change in symptoms I'm afraid. PS I tried uname -r after installing and it printed the same as normal 5.4.0-59...is that what you would expect? (Just trying to verify that lp1909005 is running, but it appeared to do all the right sort of things when I was installing it, but I have not installed a non-standard kernel before)

Hi Bruce,

'uname -r' will indeed show the same output, however with 'uname -a' you should see something like:

$ uname -a

Ok thank you, I can confirm then that lp1909005 is definitely installed but still not waking from sleep corfectly.

If it is any help...one difference I have noticed between working 5.4.0-26 and later non-working versions (including lp1909005 but previous ones too): with -26 the login (SDDM) screen is displayed, then the screen goes blank for half a second before it is redisplayed, and the same for the desktop - it is displayed, then the screen goes blank, then it is redisplayed.

With this kernel when I resume from suspend screen lights up and I am back at login. However I cannot enter password or login and I get an "authentication. error" while password textbox vibrates constantly. I have attached a picture.

Hi, I have the exact same problem as described by Bruce in #4.

I have an HP-Pavilion 15-bc313nf
OS: Ubuntu 20.04.1
Gnome v. 3.36.8
kernel (from uname -a): 5.4.0-65-generic #73-Ubuntu SMP Mon Jan 18 17:25:17 UTC 2021 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
It's a windows dual boot, with win on the SSD and Ubuntu on the HDD.
Contrary to Bruce I installed Ubuntu 18.04 a while back and upgraded to 20.04 around end of October 2020.

Someone suggested it had a link with that log line:
` kernel: [ 4113.534348] Lockdown: systemd-logind: hibernation is restricted; see man kernel_lockdown.7 `
Specifically from man ` Unencrypted hibernation/suspend to swap are disallowed as the kernel image is saved to a medium that can then be accessed. `
But since I don't have a swap partition it sounds like a dead-end.

Let me know if I can be of any use.

One note: I was able to fix this issue back in March of '21 by adding the following to /etc/default/grub

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
#changed by me on 3/18/21
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash resume=UUID=ad19f24f-7458-4bf8-a5ab-108

The UUID is that of my swap partition. It's the UUID listed in my resume file /etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

This fix stopped working after a kernel/driver update in July '21. Not sure which one.

This doesn't work:
# changed by me on 8/25/21
#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nouveau.blacklist=1"

I've attached the syslog. The suspend starts at 07:39 with a lid closure. The resume starts at 08:36. This was presumably after I had to hard power-cycle it because you can see the power-off. Various key-presses and short presses on the power button just prior to 08:36 produced nothing in the log.

In fact, I had to hard reboot thee times to get the system back. It hung after picking the kernel version in grub twice. One with a black screen. The other with a Dell screen and with Ubuntu underneath and a rotating progress meter. I don't see that screen on a normal boot.

The last kernel I used and still has this problem was linux_5.11.0-27.29.

I really like mintOS (ubuntu/debian), but I have to get out of it, because it doesn't serve me at the moment. Because debian or ubuntu doesn't mind updating glibc, and trying manually will break the system (https://github.com/Panchajanya1999/azure-clang/issues/1).

I will be migrating to Fedora. Until later.

Seeing one of the following two behaviors everytime it goes into suspend:

1) The machine goes into suspend okay, and when I press power it doesn't turn back on from suspend. I hold power to turn off, then press power again and it will come back on.

OR

2) The machine goes into suspend okay, and when I press power it turns on but hangs at a black screen. I hold power to turn off, then press power again and it will come back on.

Machine is dual booted with Windows and Ubuntu -> only seeing issues in Ubuntu

In my case, after selecting "Sleep", the screen turns off immediately and the computer seems turned off. However, it will NOT wake up or reboot. In fact, I have tried to press and hold the power button for several seconds, trying to force-shutdown it, with no effects. Also tried the Alt+PrintScr+REISUB method with no results.
The only way for me to shut it down is to physically remove the battery and reinsert it.

Hi,

this was a problem for me too, but only until i saw, that there is a specific driver/kernel-package for my exact notebook.
Maybe someone more experienced is able to extract the fix out of the tuxedo packages (as those are only installable on Tuxedo machines as is and may include fixes not needed for a different configuration): https://github.com/tuxedocomputers

For me anyway: RESOLVED
Removed "nomodeset" from the linux line in my grub bootloader. All is well now. Happy as a clam.

5.15 report sent.
Same problem also with 5.17 and 5.18 kernels.

Observations: entering suspend I see a plain orange screen with a big clock for just an instant before black out. Pressing a key will spin the fan for a few seconds but never show anything onscreen. Only way out I've found is power off & reboot. :(

Dual boot machine. Wakes OK in Windows 10.

Please note this bug is about Dell Inspiron 3593 only. All other machine types should have separate bugs opened.

The problem with many people jumping on the same bug using different machines is that they will usually all have different causes and need different fixes.

summary: - Ubuntu does not resume (wake up) from suspend
+ [Dell Inspiron 3593] Ubuntu does not resume (wake up) from suspend
