I had a similar problem w/ a T60. For some reason why I upgraded to gutsy, sound disappeared. For some reason also by simply rmmoding the appropriate modules and then modprobing them back into place, sound returned (there might have been a reboot or two in between, as well as to a different kernel).
unsure what happened, did know it was driving me crazy for a day.

hopefully it helps.

This appears to be fixed by an upstream patch that has gone into git. Please try 6.13 or 7.13 when it becomes available.

I updated to kernel 2.6.22-6.13 and I still have no sound. I didn't have any sound on the previous 2.6.22 release either. But if I reboot on my kernel 2.6.20 my sound gets back.
I'm using up to date gutsy.
Here is the output given but tutorial given above:

My soundcard is also and intel with a realtek chipset, very common.

Ben,
The fix in 6.13 does not appear to be nearly enough to support the Realtek 268.
There isn't even a setup function for the 268 codec in:
struct hda_codec_preset snd_hda_
I am going to try to look into what is needed to actually support the 268 codec, but I looked in alsa git yesterday and I didn't see anything related to the 268 at all.

Sorry, but the code I was hoping that would fix this isn't in 6.13, it
will be in the next upload. You can check http://

P.S I have no idea as to how to look into the git for what is getting
updated!

Ben,
I am not sure if I am looking at it properly but
does not seem to have any reference to the 268 codec except for 1 on line 687 and if I am reading the code correctly that doesn't even get executed for a 268 codec since there isn't any setup function, etc, for the 268.
However, I may be looking in the wrong place...

So I couldn't find the fix in your git repo but crimsun told me where it is upstream...

I am going to apply it to my kernel and see how it fares.

I bought a Toshiba A205-S4577 and I've been trying to get the sound working for the past couple of days.
I went to Chris Cheney's link
http://
and applied the patch_realtek.c to ALSA 1.0.14, compiled it for hda-intel and installed it. If I specify 3stack for the model as a module parameter, PCM doesn't show up in the mixer, so model=auto seems to work best, but alas I still don't have sound even with this new patch supporting 268.
Would there be any additional technical differences between the Toshiba's configuration that would still prevent sound from working? This is very frustrating since everything else on this laptop is working flawlessly in Ubuntu.
Mark Lockwood (biz-lockwom) wrote : | #24 |
Whenever I try to execute an application using audio in a terminal, I get the following error
ALSA lib confmisc.
ALSA lib conf.c:
ALSA lib conf.c:
ALSA lib pcm.c:2144:
Is there some way to set the default device? I still see PCM, Headphone, and Front as controllable mixers, but apparently nothing can access the card.
BTW, I'm running Ubuntu 7.04 with kernel version 2.6.20.16.28.1 with that patched ALSA 1.0.14.

I have a Toshiba A205-S4577. I have tried the patch (Ubuntu 7.04 with kernel version 2.6.20-16-generic and alsa-1.0.14 installed from source). I have noticed this message in dmesg:
[ 2658.948000] hda_codec: Unknown model for ALC268, trying auto-probe from BIOS...
[ 2659.720000] ALSA /home/azunino/
I have tried with model=3stack and model=auto with no success. Perhaps this notebook has a different codec model???? In addition, alsamixer shows a PCM slider, but it does not show a mute/unmute button bellow the slider.
Attached you will find the output of cat /proc/asound/

This patch is from 2.6.22-6.13 -> alsa-kernel mercurial changeset 5114. It includes a few other fixes besides just the Realtek ALC268 support.
I have not tested this patch yet, but I will try to test it later tonight.
Chris Cheney (ccheney) wrote : | #29 |
Tested the patch, it appears to setup the mixer right but I still can't get any sound out of my system with it.
Also, I looked at the Realtek 4.06a driver and it no longer has ALC268 support in the code, it appears they are planning on using the official ALSA version whenever it happens to actually work. Although the Realtek 4.05f driver does have support for ALC268 in the code, it isn't listed as supported in the readme.txt. Also, I haven't tested to see if 4.05f actually works for my Toshiba laptop.
If someone wants to check to see if the "official" Realtek driver works it can be downloaded from:
ftp://152.

Venky,
If no one else makes work fairly soon I will probably look over the
datasheet and try to figure it out myself. I am pretty busy with other
things at the moment, like working on getting into core-dev so I can
maintain OpenOffice. :)

I have Toshiba A205-S4577 w/ Realtek ALC268. I've been trying to solve this problem for over two weeks. I even tried installing Debian, but could get no sound. Actually, realizing that this is not just my problem is somewhat comforting. I'll watch here for help.
Christophe Dumez (hydr0g3n) wrote : | #37 |
This might have no link at all but I've just realized that I only have sound if I'm using external speakers. I don't have any sound with the laptop speakers. I will try again with the old kernel later to see if there is a link or not.

I was going through the list of bugs that had upstream patches attached to them, looking for those that would be included in the next kernel release.
This patch doesn't seem to fix problems for everyone yet. Or am I mistaken?

Hi Amit,
I am pretty sure It is not working for A205-S4577 laptop owners. There are
some other users with different laptop models with same chipset who have had
success, but i think if the bug isnt fixed for the Toshiba model it
shouldn't be closed.

After reading the report about what is needed to fix the Toshiba ALC268 it does not look specific to Toshiba per say. It appears that some systems either initialize more of the ALC268 in their BIOS or just happen to work without the setup. But the setup that is supposed to fix the Toshiba according to the upstream bug report (I haven't tested it myself) is just to enable the amplifier for the speaker/
I am working on replacement ALC268 support for ALSA, that I will try to send to whoever is in charge of it for ALSA (if I can get it working), by following the datasheet and using rtlhdmon.exe information from inside Windows.
So far some of the things that are done in the ALC268 part of the driver look suspiciously wrong to me, but I don't have a working replacement yet so I may just be misunderstanding what it is actually doing.

I think there is something fishy in the feisty setup which do not allow all users to rw these files.

Also do you have is running in 2.6.22-8 kernel?

The patch_realtek.c that I added to this thread on Jul 10 was what I used in 2.6.22. I didn't make any changes to hda_proc.c, I'm not sure if any are actually needed either. Currently I am running feisty without sound until I have time to work on it again due to other gutsy issues I am having.

Laptop Toshiba A205-S4577

Date of last updates: 18th July 2007
Packages needed before installing new ALSA Drivers : build-essential libncurses4 libncurses5 libncurses5-dev ( I am not very sure which one worked)
1)Download alsa-drivers, alsa-firware, alsa-lib, alsa-util version 1.0.14 from ALSA.org and extract it into a directory named ALSA in desktop or your home
2) Replace patch_realtek.c and hda_proc.c in the ~ALSA/alsa-
3) Then do sudo ./configure sudo make and sudo make install in the following folders according to the order specified (order is important) ALSA lib , ALSA utils ALSA firmware and lastly ALSA drivers.
hopefully you will see no errors.
4) restart

I tried with various combination, but the evel of registration is eveytime very low (but there is some capture, I can hear it for example using skype callback). So I attach all the info requested in the DebuggindSoundP
By the way, is there a better way to test mic than using ekiga or skype callback? Sound recorder of gnome does not work... it seems t register and than plain refuses to play.

parameters you listed mic/front mic what were the capture levels etc etc..

Hi,
I managed to enable the capture on this card. What I have done is:
- applied the method that suggested venky80:
https:/
- on top of that, I changed the Makefile and hda_patch.h in the same directory
so that the 3054 modules was not called anymore,
- recompiled, rebooted and MY MIKE WORKS! (Just the external one, the internal one is muted).
Hope this helps someone.

Not really. I can control the capture volume with the slide "capture", and the option in "mic". Capture1 --- which I suspect should be for the internal mic --- does not work, or is so low that I cannot notice it.

Since I installed Gutsy on my Toshiba P100-284, I don't have sound.
On Feisty it perfectly works with a custom DSDT (known bug in bios).
On Gutsy with the same custom DSDT, it doesn't work. I also tried with the lasts drivers alsa, with the patches of Chris.
I added options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba in /etc/modprobe.
If I boot with acpi=off, it works.
So I reinstalled alsa and linux-image-
If that can help, I can join my outputs with Feisty.
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Up to kernel 2.6.22-9 I was able to get sound on my hda intel + realtek ALC268 by compiling alsa 1.0.14 with the files from realtek12.tar.
With the new kernel 2.6.22-10 this resulted in a not working snd-hda-intel module. Loading this module reported a missing symbol: snd_hda_intel: Unknown symbol snd_hwdep_new
Some googling learned this missing symbol could be solved by also compiling emu10k1 from alsa.

- this patch on top of 2.6.23-rc4 kernel works (more or less) Edit (2.3 KiB, text/plain)
I have a toshiba U305-S5077, which a hda_intel chip that identifies itself as
0x1179:0xff50.
This morning I tried to separate the toshiba parts of the patch from pshou and obtained, as first try, the attached patch. With this patch on top of a current kernel (which, by the way, I need to have suspend to ram working) the sound works, recording included, but:
1) there is not automute when you plug the headphones (will try next),
2) the front mic level is TOO low
3) the recording quality is quite bad.
For the point 2), in Vista there is a "front mic boost" slider, which is missed in Linux.
For the point 3), my guess is that the offset (dc value, continuos level, I do not know how to call it) is the main culprit. You can see it in action here:
https:/
That too is not present in Vista. This is a bad problem, I think, much more difficult to resolve. It is as if the card tries to output only positive values and that this is not took into account in the software, but trying to check it is I think too difficult to me.
Romano Giannetti (romano-giannetti) wrote : | #113 |
Another comment: after a fresh reboot the recording does not work. You have to select "Front Mic" and then "Mic again", and disable/reenable capture, then it works.

I think the last error messages relate to some japanese gettext tools. Install the package "ja-trans". BTW, I have built the Aug 31 RC1 from alsaproject.org and it works fine under Ubuntu 7.04, resolving the headphone issue.

Venky,
I had the same problem; I just recompiled the driver and installed it. Lib, utils etc are at 1.0.14.

Romano,
I noticed you got the modem working with slmodemd. What alsa module did u use? R u running i386 or amd64?
I'll try alsa 1.0.15rc1 tonight (it says it includes alc268 support)... see if there r any improvements. Hopefully gutsy will b released with working alc268 and kernel 2.6.23 and we'll get s2ram and sound working out-of-the-box :)
Romano Giannetti (romano-giannetti) wrote : | #129 |
Modem seems to work, but it simply responds to AT commands, on connection it fails with NO CARRIER.
Do not try releases... I think it's better to try the current driver --- the tight interdependencies between driver, lib and utils should be a thing of the past, Linus himself ruled that out sometime ago. And the current 2.6.23-rc6 claims al268 support, but without toshiba quirks, so that it will not work for us.
By the way, I'm running i386 SMP.

hi Romano,
I tried compiling lib utils firmware from alsa 1.0.14 and driver from
snapshot .Everything went well except after restart when i run the command
alsamixer i get
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
are you using some patch?

Hi,
tried 1.0.15rc1 and everything worked fine. Quality is much better, specially for recording. No patches needed.
I know that the drivers should be enough, but i'm just trying the whole thing for kicks. It's not all that difficult to make install libs, firmware, utils and drivers if i have to make install drivers... and that somehow less buggy, since testing is all done on releases...
Romano, what do you mean by "toshiba quirks"? Do you think 2.6.23 final will support alc268 out of the box?

I just got everything working using the Realtek drivers as Jose mentioned.
I followed the steps just as they are in the Readme.txt bundled with the drivers. Here is what I did.
1) sudo apt-get install build-essential ncurses-dev gettext linux-headers-
2) Download the drivers and extract them
3) cd into the extracted directory
4) tar xjf alsa-driver-
5) cd alsa-driver-
6) ./configure
7) make
8) sudo make install
9) sudo ./snddevices
10) sudo vi /etc/modprobe.
11) reboot your machine
12) You should hear the ubuntu drums when it starts back up.
13) Open the gnome mixer ()volume control icon in the panel).
14) Tick PCM, Front, Headphone, capture and input source (no I don't know if it has to be this ... I do know this worked though)
15) Under the recording tab make sure it is not muted and under options tab make sure input source is mic.
DONE.
I was able to play mp3s, and with headset plugged into the front I had muted speakers and headset worked on skype test call. That's enough functionality for me.

Venky,
I tried it, and yes, with alsa 1.0.15rc3 it sort of works, but with the problems I signalled before: mic level is low, and it's plagued by a very high offset. Have you tried to see if it's the case for you? Is very easily seen with audacity. See my reports on the alsa bug entry:

I will check on it but, I was able to do a decent voice chat on skype but
the front mic boost level was set at maximum( there was no front mic level).
Also for the boost level there was only 3 levels of setting.
Will post my findings. meanwhile in I tried alsa 1.0.15rc3 in ubuntu gutsy
and it didn't work.

I've tried but without success, is there a special procedure to follow? some files to edit?

Mahdi (mahdi-hates-spam) wrote : | #153 |
Yep.
Nothing special.
Just aptitude install the latest kernel headers, build essential and ncurses-dev (so you can compile everything), download alsa-libs, alsa-utils, alsa-firmware and alsa drivers from www.alsa-
Reboot, umute and set all volumes with alsamixer and there you go. :)
if it doesnt work, try adding "options snd-hda-intel model=toshiba probe_mask=1" (or model=acer, if you got an acer laptop) to /etc/modprobe.

This change was reverted on the very next upload. Are you sure your
sound still doesn't work? We can't just update all of alsa at this
point, so trying things like model=3stack and model=5stack for your card
using our stock driver would be the best way to get this resolved.

Ben,
I am willing to help to test this. I have a similar laptop to the one of venky (toshiba U305),
vendor-id 0x1179, 0xff50, and I am running Feisty with a vanilla (Linus') 2.6.23-rc9 kernel, plus I have tried various alsa drivers.
I want to be sure to do the right thing, so...
* I recompile the drivers (./configure --with-
* I have alsa lib 1.0.14 installed; someone on the lkml list told me that's ok to test reinstalling just the kernel modules, is it true?
* My sound sort-of-work with 1.0.15-rcX, last hg snapshot (20071002), and the last realtek driver (4.06c), autodetected as model=toshiba. The problem is with the very lousy quality of recording, given in my opinion for the persistent problem of the huge dc offset in input (there are snaphsot and plenty of details on the alsa-bug 3104), which is not resolved.
* I tried to test model=3stack and model=acer with the procedure:
- Install the new driver (as above)
- /etc/init.d alsasound stop (a couple of times, first one fails)
- modify /etc/modprobe.
- restart alsa by modprobe snd-hda-intel (and resetting and setting all the mixer values).
Till now, no drivers has the sufficient quality in microphone input to make a Skype call possible.
If I can help test patches, please tell me. Should I try 5stack? Is the aforemention procedure correct for testing?

One thing a lot of people miss when updating with ALSA is to remove the original snd-hda-intel.ko.
cd /lib/modules
sudo tar -czf `uname -r`.tgz `uname -r`
sudo rm -f `uname -r`/ubuntu/
cd ~/alsa-
./configure; make && sudo make install
You can always recover by restoring your saved modules:
cd /lib/modules
sudo rm -rf `uname -r`
sudo tar -xzf `uname -r`.tgz
Marco Cimmino (cimmo) wrote : | #158 |
yes exactly for unknown reason snd-hda-intel is under a different directory than other audio modules.
Anyway I think Ben want to say that we have to test the ubuntu module that is just present without installing nothing else and reporting which combination of model=<something> is working for us.
Mahdi (mahdi-hates-spam) wrote : | #159 |

It suspends (at least, it seems to suspend ok: the laptop goes off and
the led blinks as expected). On resume, the hdd light stays put and
nothing happens. Alt-SysRq magic keys don't work, and I have to do a
very hard reset (power button during ten seconds) to reboot. Sometime I
have to repeat the hard reset. Very messy status.

Here is a patch against latest lum package to add support for RealTek ALC268.
This time I have extracted from the realtek17 patch _only_ the parts concerning
the RealTek ALC268.
This way regression are avoided (since alsa 1.0.14 doesn't support ALC268 at all)
So the risk of applying it is also minimum IMHO.

Here is an updated patch against latest lum package to add support for RealTek ALC268.
I have improved the patch by adding bits missing bits from the other alsa bugs (see my previous comment). I have also extracted some bits from alsa 1.0.15rc3.
I have taken care to only add ALC268 support without touching anything else.
This patch seems a little better : sound volume is higher. I did not test mics or suspend/resume.
I really hope to see this issue fixed before Gutsy release !

Anybody who tested and confirmed that (sound working without patches and no alsa recompilation)?
It might be a better solution to create new kernel pkgs instead of new alsa packages, since 2.6.23 fixes lots of important bugs, mostly related to sata and suspend/resume.

AFAIK it has only the basic support that was in alsa 1.0.14 which, at
least for me, does not work. If you see at the famous patch_realtek.c
file:
http://
there is only ALC268_3STACK and _AUTO models, nothing about _TOSHIBA od
_ACER submodels.
I have sound working with 2.6.23 kernel plus the patch here:

that I think will be pushed to 2.6.24 at an early stage of development.

kernel 2.6.23 will never reach Gutsy, because it's only 6 days distance for final.
That kernel and probably a newer one will be in Gutsy+1.

Sure. Everything works fine for me. I have to install some ia32 libs and apps for some stuff but, other than that, no problems at all. All my hardware (except sound and modem) work out of the box with good performance.
Never tried i386 on my x64 cpus though.
the intel-hda works fine for sound (with latest alsa, because, of course, alc268) and detects the modem right too (for use with slmodem-daemon), but i couldnt make it respond to any commands... =/ anyone got that working with a intel-hda rtl alc268 card?

Just tried the latest gutsy kernel on amd64 on a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4797 with the latest gutsy backport modules.
Both sound playback and recording work fine. Recording quality is quite poor though. =/ Recompiling alsa-drivers 1.0.15rcX from sources seems to provide better recording quality.

Adding manually the following line in /etc/modprobe.

I've got an Acer Aspire 5710z with 2.6.20-16 (32 bit) kernel with an HDA intel audio card with a Realteck ID 268.
I succesfully got sound working compiling the 1.0.15rc3 ALSA driver but that broke my Linuxant driver (v. 7.68 hsf) for my Conexant HDA modem reinstalling both didn't work, uninstalling it again it works (not the modem).
I made a post in ubuntuforums too: http://

Additionally, when I change the volume with my "volume up button", the internal speakers unmute. Using the "volume down button" does not unmute the internal speakers.
This last part can (I think) be fixed by changing which slider the volume buttons control (even the "volume down button" to keep some conformity/symmetry :p) - Is there any way to do that without some hardcore coding? Thank you in advance.

With my U305 the mics sort-of-works with alsa-driver 1.0.16 on top of
Gusty, or with a 2.6.25 kernel. Sort-of means that I had to find the
magic combination: mic boost at about 1/3, capture level at about 2/3,
digital capture (a new control with 1.0.16) at about 1/3. Other
combinations make the mic too low, too noisy or to distorted.
Takashi has been out quite a long time, but now he's back. I'm confident
that now that he's back things will start again to roll.
Martin Olsson (mnemo) wrote : | #245 |
My sound also started to work now which is pure joy. Thanks to everyone who contributed to making this happen!
As pointed out by others, the microphone doesn't work though. Here is the strangest part though:
If I install "recordmydesktop" then the mic works but it records with extremely low volume. With the usual "sound recorder" utility app all I get is aggressive snapping or pounding sounds (reminds me of some kind of motor or something). These strange snapping sounds are also not related to how or what I say when I'm recording, the snapping sounds that's actually being recorded into the audio file are regular in pace and volume. Microphone also doesn't work in Skype on Linux. In Vista on the same machine the mic works in all apps. I have tried googling for hours on various configurations inside alsamixer etc but nothing worked. I've tried unmuting/muting various channels like "mic boost", "front boost" etc and I've tried all kinds of input source settings but I simply could not get the mic to work in ubuntu inside any application except for the strange and magic "recordmydesktop" application. Finally, one more curious detail is that I tried to boot Fedora Core 9 Preview on this same machine and there the mic didn't work either (which is not that suprising given that they have the same ALSA version, they have pulse audio etc) but for some reason I can actually get the mic to work using the F9 preview live CD by deploying the usual tricks (messing around with settings in alsamixer etc). I also noted that if I turn up the "mic boost" to maximum in F9 I hear those strange snapping/pounding sounds again but much weaker.
Getting high quality microphone support to work would be a great improvement though, mostly because of Skype.

I own a Toshiba satellite A210-158 and iI have excatly the same output as mnemo.
Sound works good, audio jack finally works too. However, with microphone there's no way. I've been googling for long hours too but nothing. When I try i get those annoying sounds described by mnemo.
No mic on skype neither.
Last thing I haven't tried it's mic jack. But built-in mic doesn't seem to work at all.

There is 1 thing that still bugs me: whenever the audio system is initialized (like at bootup) and I have external speakers plugged in, I have to unplug them and plug them back in after audio has initialized. If I don't, the external speakers aren't used at all, as if they were never plugged in at all. Since I have external speakers plugged in whenever I am home, and have earpieces plugged in when I am not, this is a real problem.
For informational purposes: I have a zepto Znote 6625WD which has a Realtek ALC268 audio chip.

But you need to modify You need to replace the following line in /etc/modprobe.
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10
with:
options snd-hda-intel power_save=10 model=acer-dmic
And then reboot (or reload the snd-hda-module).
After that, internal mics works.
Record level is a bit low but is works :-)
