Sound broken on Gutsy LiveCD for Intel HDA with chipset "Realtek ALC268"

Bug #154921 reported by Martin Olsson

Bug Description

Repro steps:

1. Boot gutsy LiveCD
2. Try to play examples / saxophone.ogg or whatever
3. No sound plays

In Windows Vista my soundcard is identified as "Realtek High Definition Audio".
Currently when I run alsamixer the top left labels say "Card: HDA Intel" and "Chip: Realtek ID 268".

I have had sound working previously on this exact machine using a pre-release gutsy version and some manually configuration. When the sound was working the top left alsamixer fields says "HDA Intel" and "Chip: Realtek ALC268".

So there is clearly a driver codec thing for my chip but the problem is that Ubuntu doesn't ship it by default?

There are workarounds for this at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Gutsy_Intel_HD_Audio_Controller.

Most of them seem to involve installing linux-backports-modules and modding /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
