Bug Description

I'm now getting my wired (i.e. Ethernet) connection hanging on trying to connect. I've tried switching ports (on the router) and using a different cable, but still the same.

ifconfig shows for Ethernet:
enp2s0: flags=4163<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
ether 50:eb:f6:ef:a4:e6 txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX packets 2779 bytes 250524 (250.5 KB)
RX errors 0 dropped 1 overruns 0 frame 0
TX packets 355 bytes 72171 (72.1 KB)
TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0

sudo lshw -C enp2s0 shows nothing

lspci -nn shows for Ethernet: 02:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8125 2.5GbE Controller [10ec:8125] (rev 05)

I found a web page: https://tutorialforlinux.com/2021/05...based-systems/
I followed the instructions and installed realtek-r8125-dkms package OK. On rebooting, I followed the instructed procedure (shown when installing the package) of creating a password and then entering it when requested on the reboot. But still same problem. Any ideas what to do?
PS I've switched Wi-Fi on (though I'd prefer to use Ethernet, as my Wi-Fi is a little flaky due to walls) in order to post this question.

I found a webpage:
https://tutorialforlinux.com/2021/05...based-systems/

I followed the instructions and installed realtek-r8125-dkms package OK. On rebooting, I followed the instructed procedure (shown when installing the package) of Enrolling a MOK, creating a password and then entering it when requested on the reboot. But worse in that the Wired option is not shown when trying to connect to internet via router. And my WiFi (using Router) is not working so I'm posting using my Android phone as a Hotspot. Will I have any hair left soon!

I've found another webpage:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1287...289417#1289417
I've tried both answer 1 & answer 2. Still no improvement after either.

Yet more information:
I've now uninstalled the various dkms packages that following the procedures in the webpages (referred to previously) and the repos (in Software & Updates app) for them. These packages are: r8125-dkms, r8168-dkms & realtek-8125-dkms. The repos are for https://launchpad.net/~hardkernel/+archive/ubuntu/ppa and https://github.com/awesometic/realtek-r8125-dkms. Should I uninstall the dkms package?

I've also reset the keys for Secure Boot in the BIOS.

Rebooting after doing the above still results in WiFi hanging and no Wired fuctionality shown for establishing a network connection by clicking on the top right of the screen.

Just tried the OEM kernel. I tapped the Shift key on rebooting. It gave 3 options on booting: Ubuntu, Advanced options for Ubuntu, UEFI Firmware Settings. I chose Ubuntu. It showed 6.01 and then came up with the standard login scree, On logging in (with my phone's Hotspot switched off; since these issues started I have it switched on as it's the only way I can get the computer connected to the internet), it now showed that Wired is Off whereas previously there was nothing about Wired. I've tried both Wired and Wi-Fi but both hang on trying to connect.

I bought the computer just under a year ago: it's an Asus (barebones) mini PN50-1 with a Ryzen 7 4700-U CPU. So it's always been using 22.04. I transferred the memory and SSD from my previous old computer. I think that I previously said that this computer was working on both Ethernet & Wi-Fi until about 2 weeks ago. Interestingly my wife's computer (an old Pentium laptop) is still Ok: it runs on 22.04 and had been upgraded Ok from 20.04 and previous LTS versions).

I don't recall what I did to make ethernet hang on attempting connection. It was a few weeks ago. As I previously detailed Wi-Fi also hung about 2 weeks ago. I only reported this on Launchpad a few days ago because I didn't know which package to specify when using ubuntu-bug. I have reported the problem on both Ask Ubuntu & Ubuntu Forums when it started to happen: there have been no replies.

I have not installed any new apps/packages for months except those packages installed by Software Updater & the attempted corrections previously detailed which I have reversed.

You should not need any DKMS packages nor an OEM kernel. The stock Ubuntu kernel supports your NIC natively. Remove the DKMS modules and reboot into the 5.19 kernel and post the dmesg output from that boot.

lsmod should list the r8169 module.

And:
$ modinfo r8169 | grep 8125
firmware: rtl_nic/rtl8125b-2.fw
firmware: rtl_nic/rtl8125a-3.fw
alias: pci:v000010ECd00008125sv*sd*bc*sc*i*

And the firmware should be there as well:
$ ls -la /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8125*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3456 Apr 21 07:41 /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8125a-3.fw

I checked that r8169 was in the OEM kernel. I used Synaptic to search for any dkms packages. Only one was dkms itself which I removed. I rebooted with 5.43 kernel and checked again for r8169: it was not present. How do I add it?

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3328 Apr 21 06:36 /lib/firmware/rtl_nic/rtl8125b-2.fw

When I said that I had removed dkms package, I meant purged.

BTW are the BIOS errors in dmesg relevant to the issue?

Tech Support Realtek told me to disable Secure Boot which I have done. I was then able to compile & install r8125, r8128 & r8128 modules obtained from Realtek website. 'lsmod | grep r81' showed all 3 modules. ifconfig showed the ethernet interface Ok (as enp3s0). However, ethernet still hung on connection. So I rebooted and did 'lsmod | grep 81' only showed r8125! 'modinfo r8169 | grep 8125' showed nothing. Help please!

Apologies to everyone trying to help. It turns out that the problem is the computer: a 4 month old Asus mini PN50-1. I suddenly remembered that the same thing had happened last August and that the supplier had given me a replacement after I returned the original.

Just got a new computer (MinisForums MC560) with Ryzen CPU. Ok for first few days. Now ethernet hangs. So turned Wired off & turned WiFi on. Ok for now. I daren't try Wired again in case WifI also stops working.

Interesting to compare the old computer & the new computer for ethernet using lspci -nn.
Old computer:

03:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Wi-Fi 6 AX200 [8086:2723] (rev 1a)
New computer:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller [10ec:8168] (rev 15)
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: MEDIATEK Corp. Device [14c3:0608]

I found a web page re AMD Ryzen & Ubuntu to fix constant crashes:
https://www.servethehome.com/amd-ryzen-with-ubuntu-here-is-what-you-have-to-do-to-fix-constant-crashes/
But it dates back to 2017. So is it worth trying given that it refers to an old kernel version 4 and not the current version 5?
I've also found a reference to installing AMD GPU drivers at:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1432449/how-to-install-amd-gpu-drivers-ubuntu-22-04-lts
Could this be relevant, especially as I don't do gaming?

A Realtek Ethernet Controller was on my old PC and it is on my new MinisForum MC560 PC and it is on my old Lenovo laptop. My old PC had an Intel AX200 wireless interface; my old Lenovo laptop has a Realtek wireless interface; my new PC has a MEDIATEK wireless interface. So there seems to be nothing in common between the problem PCs (old PC & new PC) which the Lenovo laptop has, except that the problem PCs are AMD Ryzen processors and the Lenovo laptop is a Pentium 1 processor!

My new PC doesn't even have WireGuard on it whereas my old PC had WireGuard on it, as I've decided to use a Raspberry Pi model 4 B for that.

Here is network details for new PC:

@Juerg I have only one Ubuntu PC (a brand new MinisForum MC560, with AMD Ryzen 5 5625u with radeon graphics × 12, with new installation of Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop using the default Wayland) with this problem i.e. it hangs if I try to connect by Wired using the standard method. So I connect by Wifi to my router, which works Ok.

I have NOT installed any third party or other drivers or firmware (i.e. the only drivers & firmware installed on it are those that the Ubuntu installation installed). The only other software that I have installed are snap packages for apps (e.g. Joplin) and apps like Avidemux from a Launchpad ppa (none of which have ever caused any problem like this one in the past).

At first the Wired connection worked but then it suddenly stopped working: this occurred after a freeze of keyboard and mouse without the PC displaying a blank screen due to inactivity) which happened as I was away from the PC for an hour or so. When I restarted the PC, on the BIOS 'start' it showed a few orphaned iodes but it booted Ok.

The other Ubuntu computer (an old Pentium laptop also running Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop upgraded from 20.04 in 2022) works Ok using either Wired or Wifi connection. I also has apps like Joplin & Avidemux installed.

This webpage https://askubuntu.com/questions/1432449/how-to-install-amd-gpu-drivers-ubuntu-22-04-lts might be a solution to this problem, specifically the last answer:
Then I went to and GPU drivers for linux
I downloaded the driver for Ubuntu 22.04. It is named amdgpu-install
I installed it using -
sudo gdebi amdgpu-install
Then,
sudo apt install amdgpu

Any views anyone on this answer?

PS I just checked for any amdgpu packages installed already. The only ones are libdrm-amdgpu1 & xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu.
