@koba ifconfig shows that ethernet has nothing. wg0 is for WireGuard. wlps0 is for my phone's hotspot as only way I can connect to internet either wired or wirelessly. Wired connection normally showing by clicking on top right hand corner of screen has again disappeared! I disconnected phone's hotspot in between 1st & 2nd ifcnofig: john@Desktop:~$ ifconfig lo: flags=73 mtu 65536 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 scopeid 0x10 loop txqueuelen 1000 (Local Loopback) RX packets 2459061 bytes 185774876 (185.7 MB) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 2459061 bytes 185774876 (185.7 MB) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 wg0: flags=209 mtu 1420 inet 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 destination 10.0.0.1 unspec 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 txqueuelen 1000 (UNSPEC) RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) TX errors 15 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 wlp3s0: flags=4163 mtu 1500 inet 192.168.203.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 192.168.203.255 inet6 fe80::c01f:1a40:87b9:30b5 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x20 ether bc:f1:71:6d:25:4f txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet) RX packets 943830 bytes 1085877280 (1.0 GB) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 486094 bytes 69901150 (69.9 MB) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 john@Desktop:~$ ifconfig lo: flags=73 mtu 65536 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 scopeid 0x10 loop txqueuelen 1000 (Local Loopback) RX packets 2462191 bytes 186047466 (186.0 MB) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 2462191 bytes 186047466 (186.0 MB) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 wg0: flags=209 mtu 1420 inet 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 destination 10.0.0.1 unspec 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 txqueuelen 1000 (UNSPEC) RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) TX errors 15 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 john@Desktop:~$ sudo lshw -C network [sudo] password for john: *-network UNCLAIMED description: Ethernet controller product: RTL8125 2.5GbE Controller vendor: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0 version: 05 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix vpd bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: ioport:f000(size=256) memory:fe900000-fe90ffff memory:fe910000-fe913fff *-network DISABLED description: Wireless interface product: Wi-Fi 6 AX200 vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 logical name: wlp3s0 version: 1a serial: bc:f1:71:6d:25:4f width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlwifi driverversion=5.19.0-43-generic firmware=72.daa05125.0 cc-a0-72.ucode latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11 resources: irq:67 memory:fe800000-fe803fff john@Desktop:~$ rfkill list 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: no john@Desktop:~$ rfkill unblock all john@Desktop:~$ rfkill list 0: hci0: Bluetooth Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no 1: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no john@Desktop:~$ ifconfig lo: flags=73 mtu 65536 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 255.0.0.0 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 scopeid 0x10 loop txqueuelen 1000 (Local Loopback) RX packets 2462473 bytes 186069134 (186.0 MB) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 2462473 bytes 186069134 (186.0 MB) TX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 wg0: flags=209 mtu 1420 inet 10.0.0.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 destination 10.0.0.1 unspec 00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00-00 txqueuelen 1000 (UNSPEC) RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) RX errors 0 dropped 0 overruns 0 frame 0 TX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B) TX errors 15 dropped 0 overruns 0 carrier 0 collisions 0 john@Desktop:~$ sudo lshw -C network *-network UNCLAIMED description: Ethernet controller product: RTL8125 2.5GbE Controller vendor: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:02:00.0 version: 05 width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix vpd bus_master cap_list configuration: latency=0 resources: ioport:f000(size=256) memory:fe900000-fe90ffff memory:fe910000-fe913fff *-network DISABLED description: Wireless interface product: Wi-Fi 6 AX200 vendor: Intel Corporation physical id: 0 bus info: pci@0000:03:00.0 logical name: wlp3s0 version: 1a serial: bc:f1:71:6d:25:4f width: 64 bits clock: 33MHz capabilities: pm msi pciexpress msix bus_master cap_list ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=iwlwifi driverversion=5.19.0-43-generic firmware=72.daa05125.0 cc-a0-72.ucode latency=0 link=no multicast=yes wireless=IEEE 802.11 resources: irq:67 memory:fe800000-fe803fff Are there any packages which I can reinstall (or even purge & install) which are used for connection to a router? BTW I have a an old Pentium laptop also on Ubuntu 22.04 which works Ok still. The only thing that I can think of that is causing these issues is that sometimes my PC freezes (and I don't know why) which gives rise to some orphaned inodes on rebooting. I've even tried a TP-Link usb wifi dongle but that doesn't connect either on this Asus barebones PN50-1 computer but works OK on my old Pentium laptop.
