Yet more information:
I've now uninstalled the various dkms packages that following the procedures in the webpages (referred to previously) and the repos (in Software & Updates app) for them. These packages are: r8125-dkms, r8168-dkms & realtek-8125-dkms. The repos are for https://launchpad.net/~hardkernel/+archive/ubuntu/ppa and https://github.com/awesometic/realtek-r8125-dkms. Should I uninstall the dkms package?

I've also reset the keys for Secure Boot in the BIOS.

Rebooting after doing the above still results in WiFi hanging and no Wired fuctionality shown for establishing a network connection by clicking on the top right of the screen.
