Bug Description

Recently updated my installed version of Stellarium from 0.10.4 to latest 0.10.5. Upon running 0.10.5 I find nearly all the on-screen text to be scrambled (especially descriptions, in top let-hand corner, of any selected items). This did not occur for me with previous ver 0.10.4. Display is just a mess of scrambled text - unreadable. My settings within Stellarium 0.10.5 are exactly the same as for previous.
Please help if you can....

My Computer System Details:-
Dell Precision 530 Workstation
Intel XEON 2.40GHz CPU
1GB RAM
Win XP-Prof SP-3 O.S.
nVidia Quadro4 900 XGL graphics adapter with 128MB memory:-
 - Driver version 9.1.3.6 , dated 12/07/2006. (this is the latest current driver ver, I believe.)
 - Screen resolution = 1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz, 32 bit colour quality.

If you need any further info re this reported bug, please let me know...

Thank you & Best Regards,
Robert Brandini.

Hi Robert,

This is likely a duplicate of several other bug reports, but thanks for
such a detailed list of hardware. These font corruption bugs are
affecting a wide range of systems so the more info provided the better.

Could you please check what version of OpenGL is being used? You can do
this by checking the Stellarium log? (see 'last run log' under the
Stellarium entry in the Windows Start menu, about 20 lines from the top
- it will be either "OpenGL" or "OpenGL2") Alternatively, you could
just attach a copy of the log file.

A possible solution is close to release for testing, so it would be
great if you're able to help out.

In the mean time, if the OpenGL version is 2 you could try forcing use
of OpenGL1 - run the "Stellarium (no OpenGL2)" version from the Windows
Start menu. Let us know if this helps.

G'day Peter,

Sorry to take a while to reply, have been busy...

Attached is the Stellarium log file from my last run with scattered text
issue...

- Seems only OpenGL, & not 2, being used...

However, I just ran it again using the "Stellarium (no OpenGL2)" option from
Win Start menu and

all the text seems to be fine now - no more scattering, etc...?

So it then seems, problem of text scattering is only with OpenGL2..?

Happy to help further if you require...

Rob.

Using the "Stellarium (no OpenGL2)" option forces the use of a difference font (Verdana) in place of the default font (DejaVu Sans). For your case, it seems the font itself is the problem (you're not alone with that).

A fix is in the pipelines but, in the mean time, just run the "Stellarium (no OpenGL2)" option (it makes no difference otherwise, and your system doesn't support OpenGL2 regardless).

Thanks for the explanation & feedback Peter...

I will just run using the "Stellarium (no OpenGL2)" option for now and all
is good...

Will keep an eye out for the next version/release of software...

Thanks again & Best Regards,
Robert Brandini.

In fact on my PC this problem hasn't be fully fixed with the "no OpenGL2" option.

OS: Win Vista Business SP2 x86
RAM: 2GB DDR2-SDRAM
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 4200+ 2.20GHz
Chipset: nVidia nForce 410
Video card: Radeon X1600 Series 512MB DDR2
Screen resolution: 1440x900 60Hz true color (32 bit)
Stellarium: 0.10.6

Look at the attachments (filenames describe their origin).
As you can see, while with OpenGL all strings are scrambled, with no_OpenGL2 the words are readable: however there are still problems in rendering vertical segments.

First of all thanks for your suggestions.

I performed the following steps:
- downloaded the Catalyst Software Suite v10.2 from that page
- from Control Panel uninstall the ATI software currently installed
- rebooted
- installed the just downloaded Catalyst Software Suite v10.2, with Full Install options
- rebooted
Now the situation is:
- the driver version is still 8.14.10.0647 (through PCWizard 2010)
- through CCC (Catalyst Control Center) I see the same build but also 10.2 as the Catalyst version itself, i.e. it seems that the new CCC installation in fact still contained the previous drivers
- 2D drivers version: 8.01.01.882
- Direct3D version: 8.14.10.0647
- OpenGL version: 6.14.10.8545

1) Running Stellarium in both modes OpenGL/noOpenGL caused the same problems as before.
2) changing the video resolution to 1280x800 didn't change anything
3) changing the video resolution to 1024x768 didn't change anything
4) reverting to 1440x900 and decreasing the color depth to 16bit worsened the normal start, while the noOpenGL run was unchanged

What else could I try?

I also tried out the new version 0.10.6.1 because it says it might solve some font rendering problems but it still does not help. The only recent version that works for me is 0.10.2, everything else beyond that has had font rendering problems, mainly in the text that label objects like stars, constellations etc. I attached my log files for both versions.
For now I'm sticking with 0.10.2.

I sometimes have those intermittent problems with font rendering, it has to do with the info box in the upper lefthand corner. And also when you hover the mouse over the lower menu-bar for descriptions of the icons. This is in openGL. Running it without openGL seems to work just fine.

This happens on a variety of my winXP systems, old and new.
