10.5 Crashed But Now Garbled Text

Bug Description

I installed 10.5 today (apparently was the first to download it). After starting up, it had jumbled text that didn't make sense. When a bug report on an earlier version suggested opening the one that doesn't use OpenGL2 and it worked.

After I got home I installed Stellarium on a different computer and 10.5 loaded and it immediately crashed. I have an ATI Radeon 9600 card on the first computer and ATI Radeon X6000 on this second computer and so I thought to update the driver on the second computer. After updating the driver the Stellarium on the second computer had the same problem as the first (garbled text) and again the only way to get around this is was to start the version without OpenGL2.

What is going on? I'd like to be able to use Stellarium 10.5 with OpenGL2.

Hi Adam,
Could you please post a screenshot of the garbled text? Also, which OS
are you running?

Hi Peter,
In the forum Brett posted a similar problem with image attached here:

I do not know if you have seen my reply in pubdevel regarding Arabic under safe mode (No OpenGL2), but I repeat here:
Under 0.10.5 safe mode, Arabic is not displayed correctly, but I noticed 3
instances where arabic characters will be displayed correctly under this
mode:
1. when the arabic character is a stand alone with space before and after
it.
2. I tested with a text in the sky cultures discription files and put the
arabic text between html <em> and </em> and then the whole arabic text
enclosed is displayed correctly.

3. The cardinal points south, north, etc.. are also displayed correctly as full
words.

For Normal mode Arabic is fine.

Peter,

Here is a screenshot taken on computer #1 in my office running with a ATI Radeon 9600.

Both computers #1 and #2 are running XP Pro.

Thanks for the images and info. I can replicate all of these issues and have been working through the code to try and find a solution. Unfortunately, it seems to be a combination of problems related to fonts, Qt and OpenGL; I've found solutions for bits and pieces, but nothing that fixes everything. Work on all of these related font issues will be discussed in the mailing list and perhaps in a new, summarised thread (these bug reports are scattered everywhere and are thus hard to keep track of).

Adam - I don't think there's any problems/disadvantages running in OpenGL1 mode; if it works, I'd stick with it (I use it myself to avoid low frame rates when grid lines are displayed).
