Bug Description

I get logged off from Ubuntu sometimes. There is no error message or any indication that it is going to log off. The screen goes black, and after 2-4 seconds, i get presented with the Ubuntu Log On Screen.

There is no clear pattern (or at least if have not noticed any). One time i am working with Netbeans, another time i am using firefox. This also means that at present i can not clearly say what package might be causing this behaviour.

I am fairly sure the problem lies in 12.04 (or more precise - the combination of 12.04 and the hardware i am using). I do not have the same problem running 11.04 or 11.10.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/980519/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

However I have also had this happen when not watching videos, its just that it happens every time I watch a video.

I have the same problem, but it only happens to be on startup. My system is set to automatically log in.

When I first turn on my machine, it logs in and I am able to launch programs etc. after a short while (maybe a minute or two) I notice some strange graphical artifacts near the top of the screen, it is hard to describe but something along the lines of a few rows of blinking rectangles. I then get logged out, after which I can log back in and I have no further problem.

I have no idea what package might have caused this.

Interesting ! I have had that too. Mine looked like a garbled shell. I
could see chars appear when I typed but it wast A-Z text that was displayed.

I have read today that it could be X server that is crashing which results
in the login screen being shown.

When I get home I will check the Xorg.0.log file in /var/log for errors.

Cheers

This bug has also stung me many times. It seems to happen at any time, one time it happened when I was away from my computer. It felt like X (or another process) was getting killed because it happened with no warning and was more-or-less instant. Though I can't confirm this, it *seems* like Unity 2D is not affected by this problem.

I don't know if it's relevant to the developers but I actually also get the little logoff sound. As in a proper logoff, rather than crashing to login screen?

Looks like the pattern here is 64bit 12.04 with nvidia drivers mostly
playing video in chrome or Firefox.

64-bit architecture. It happens in both fresh install and upgrade to 12.04.

it can happen in different apps: Firefox, geany and others.
I am usually sent back to the login screen without any prior notice but on some occasions the screen freezes and only the mouse stays responsive, but of course those two behaviours could be unrelated.

bug#990693 could be a duplicate.

Alex Mishovsky (beulih) wrote :

Ubuntu 12.04 seems buggy as hell with NVidia drivers. I built a new system with a 9500GT card and two monitors in anticipation of the 12.04 release. I couldn't work more than a couple of minutes at a time in Unity 3D before a complete freeze. Additionally, while logging in I would often get artifacts at the top of the screen. Switching to Unity 2D made the freezes less frequent but they still happened.

Finally I got fed up. I am interested in using this system for actual work as opposed to beta testing for the Ubuntu devs, so I threw in a 8500GT card that I had sitting on the shelf. It doesn't freeze up any more even in Unity 3D mode, but about every couple of hours it just completely logs me out. I'm fairly certain I have the same bug mentioned by others in this thread. Logs show this right before the surprise logout:

May 3 23:09:39 zsasz kernel: [10015.085461] NVRM: Xid (0000:01:00): 6, PE0001

Tomorrow when I get time I will try downgrading to the 295.33 drivers (I am currently running 295.49). Googling Ubuntu 12.04 nvidia problem gives about 500,000 results, so I'm kicking myself for not waiting another few months to upgrade. So much for "LTS", lol...

I never experience any problems at all on 10,10. I figured i could upgrade to 12.04 thinking it will be stable. I hate unity and I am running Gnome-shell. I really hope this problem gets resolved being that i use this system primarily for work.

I did do a BIOS update on my T5400, been that prior to this my machine will completely freeze and will dump the following error:

My two cents for finding the bug is that it invariably blacks out after I press the enter key. The bug doesn't seem to be a problem with a certain application, as it has happened with most (just crashed IDLE). That some report it happens with chrome I think is just a symptom of that being the most frequently used application.

This is by far the largest problem with 12.04 right now for me. A fix would save much frustration and lost work...

I also have had this problem after a fresh install of 12.04 64bit. I am suddenly and randomly logged out, losing whatever I was working on when the crash occurred. It seems to happen with increasing frequency the longer the machine is left on. The syslog gave no clues as to the fault.

I have an i7, asus 1155 motherboard, ATI 5000 series graphics card and crucial SSD which worked fine with 10.10 and the FLGRX driver installed on 12.04 without problems. After many, many crashes I decided to use the 2D unity option but after several completely unresponsive whole system crashes and 2 weeks of failed attempts, I have now downgraded to 11.10 64bit, which runs with no problems at all.

This issue should be a prio 1. I've lost work because of this!

Seriously considering another distribution at the moment, this shouldn't happening especially not in a LTS release....

As Simon Morris said in bug #973096 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973096) it seems to reduce the crashes but I recently had one.. For me is something with flash since it only happens to me watching youtube videos. I've also switched to the HTML5 version of youtube to see if that's the problem.. anyway videos with ads are still showing using flash

For editing the xorg.conf file you have to open a terminal and execute:

$ sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

If you don't have a Section "Device" you can add

Section "Device"
 Identifier "Device0"
 Driver "nvidia"
 VendorName "NVIDIA Corporation"
 Option "NoLogo" "True"
 Option "UseEvents" "False"
EndSection

Reboot or go to text mode (ctrl+alt+F1) and execute:

$ sudo service lightdm restart

I remember I had encountered this bug a little after a fresh install.
Then it seemed to be fixed after a few updates but today(after almost a month) it happened again two times!

details:

1st time it happened: I pressed SUPER+2 to open firefox right after logging in: It logd out immediately and...reseted my keyboard layout (which isn't only annoying but could be very bad for a noob who doesn't know how to setup a foreign keyboard layout from scratch)

2nd time (like old times): I opened firefox and started typing...BOOM! logd out again luckily this time my keyboard setup was left intact.

please Ubuntu team: give some priority to fixing bugs. There are *alot* of them for an LTS release.

I spend some time trying many different options (switching to nouveau, trying different nvidia drivers, ...) but none worked for me. Then I installed a clean version with minimal packages and start try and error with different packages. And finally I think I have found the package that was causing the crash: it was the google talk browser plugin. I tried it several times, and without the gtalk plugin my precise is quite stable.

Is there anyone CC'ed on this bug having the google talk plugin installed? If you guys can reproduce what I have experienced, we can report it too Google and they will quickly resolve it.

I also have Nvidia drivers, using an Intel i7 machine. Honestly speaking, I see the potential in Ubuntu as a credible alternative to Windows and would love to have dedicated Ubuntu machine because the user experience is far better than with Windows. With virtualbox, I can have access to Windows applications, however this is the only bug that is stopping me from being a full convert to Linux / Ubuntu.

For me, I get logged out for no reason whatsoever. There does not seem to be any observable pattern for this bug. The only constant variable is that it happens when I'm 'doing stuff' --> Doing stuff means surfing the web, doing work, etc .... It usually happens while surfing the web, as that is what I usually do with Ubuntu.

And one thing I observe, when I leave the PC on so that a download can finish overnight, then it does not log out automatically. Therefore the only constant variable about this bug is that it only happens when the machine is idle, but when you are actively doing stuff with the PC, it happens.

There therefore appears to be no way to predict when the problem will occur.

I am not completely convinced that this is a duplicate of #973096, because there was no crash/fault logged before the Fatal IO Error 11, as reported by the people in that bug.

I've also noticed that this bug is only present when there's high network activity.

If I'm not running any torrents or streaming anything the system will stay logged into the same session indefinitely -- I can watch x264 video, play openGL games, etc, with no crashy behaviour... But if I'm downloading lots of torrents the session will log out randomly even if I'm not doing anything graphics-intensive (eg, 5 mins ago it logged me out while the only things open were qbittorrent and a nautilus window).

I think we've been barking up the wrong tree with the graphics drivers. I'd suggest looking into the network drivers.

This has nothing to do with NVidia. I have an Intel 4500 GMA. I think I've finally reached the end of my rope with Ubuntu. Just when it's working for you, they break it. Unity worked very well on my ACER 1410 laptop under 11.04, surprisingly, though it was expected to have many bugs. But instead of it get refined over the last year, it seems to be just getting more unstable. I'd hoped to stay with the LTS for awhile, but I probably won't be staying with Ubuntu at all.

I could never get Unity to work reliably on my desktop, and have long since replace it with KDE, which has been almost rock solid stable. I don't like the UI as well, but it has it's own strengths.

I've also noticed the logouts seem to happen when I'm using the web browser (Chromium), though I haven't verified that.

Almost every time it boots, or resumes from suspend, I get an error message asking if I want to submit a report. Clicking continue only leads me in an endless circle of pop messages.

I've tried to be patient with Ubuntu, and had high hopes for it. But since upgrading to 12.04, I've gone a month without printing, suffered scores of random log-outs ( with the resulting lost data and time), and constant error messages. A fresh install didn't help at all. There's the possibility of sticking with Kubuntu, but the frequent indifference shown to major bugs like this has left me very disenchanted.

Happens with Unity, Unity 2D, Gnome classic (and new variants). It ONLY HAPPENS when I close my lid and wakes up sometimes later ! (and not after a fresh restart)

Will this a clue to someone out there ?

Initially I thought this to be a problem with the intel drivers, but seeing people with amd and nvidia cards have the same problem I don't know where to point my finger. Its not the DE, as this has happened with both KDE, unity and gnome 3 in ubuntu 12.04. In dmesg lines like these appear:

Xorg[11692]: segfault at 7ffb00000011 ip 00007ffbc0ab11b8 sp 00007fff56de3090 error 4 in Xorg[7ffbc0989000+1f0000]

The crashes seem to happen randomly, although more frequently just after waking from suspend, often just seconds after unlocking the screen.

From my recent observations, it ALWAYS happens in the same way:
* always on startup (I log in automatically)
* and after pressing ENTER in a application, be it Google Chrome (the address field, or search field in gmail) or Gnome Terminal. It looks like the trigger is always the ENTER key. I key in a URL, or a command in the terminal and press ENTER, and then it happens, always.

Wow got similar behavior as described in this bug just yesterday after an update.

So when I log in and the Unity desktop should become visible the Welcome screen comes back asking again for a password.
If I try XFCE I do get the desktop but when I try to start any programs there is a crash and the Welcome screen comes up asking for the password.

I use Nvidia Quadro card and Ubuntu 13.10.

So the bug might not be fixed. Before the update I didn't not have this issue.

Kind regards.

I have exactly the same problem as eMKi (mkisovec), but with Ubuntu 14.04 and dual video card system (Intel Hasewell and Nvidia GEForce 840M). I use Nvidia trive 331 and Bumblebee. Used to work pretty fine.
The problem appeared today, may be due to a recently updated package.
Seems that I'm not the only one experiencing this:

I also got this bug recently. At random clicks on random programs (Chrome, web site links, etc), I would get logged out (black screen that flutters constantly between the login until I click on the mouse, move the mouse, type something, or in some cases wait long enough, in which a stable login screen will appear to allow me to log back in). However, I was able to fix this issue by not using unity. Instead I installed gnome and logged out and back in with gnome (I'm using the class with no effects version). Hope this helps.

This bug has starting affecting one of my production servers. I would classify it as "critical". I turned off and uninstalled the screensaver on this computer, but apparently that is not enough to prevent Ubuntu from going to sleep. It will go to sleep by itself even if there is NO SCREENSAVER application installed on the operating system! That is a CRITICAL BUG!!!

So, in an effert to stop the computer from going to sleep, I installed XScreenSaver, and turned it to "never go to sleep, ever" settings. Now I have to start XScreenSaver at startup, to try to PREVENT this machine from going to sleep. But it doesn't work.

Every few days, I'll wake up and be logged out of the machine, server is down, not live to the world. Downtime caused by this bug. If I then try to log back in, it IMMEDIATELY logs me back out! I have to cold restart the whole machine to get back in.

This bug is so critical that I may have to migrate away from Ubuntu if there is no forthcoming solution.

@Ryan,

This bug is about random log off's, not preventing a machine from going to sleep and issues derived from that. I believe you commented in the wrong bug. Please either find an appropriate bug or enter a new bug report altogether. Thanks!

All others,
This is a bug closed as Fixed Released and is specific to 12.04. If you are seeing similar behavior, please submit a new bug report.

Thanks!

I have nvidia, so the common theme seems to be nvidia (however, may not even be that).

I have tried in vain to find a fix for the last 4 years and have now learned to live with it (save frequently, etc). It sucks but not enough to go back to Windows

Recently I plugged in a 3rd monitor to my desktop and the issue seems to have increased
