I am running 64bit Ubuntu 11.10. However, I have to amend my first
statement that all three of my computers were displaying correctly.

   1. My first laptop displays nettool correctly.
   2. My desktop displays nettool correctly only after I change the focus
from the loopback adapter to the ethernet adapter. doWhen I switch back to
the loopback it still displays correctly.
   3. My second laptop (fresh install of ubuntu 11.10 - 64bit three days
ago) does not display nettool correctly even if I change the adapter focus.

All three computers show the version of nettool as 3.0.0.

I'm not sure why the inconsistency exists. I don't remember running the ppa
update on any of the computers, but if I did, wouldn't the version be
different?

Is that the only problem with AMD64?
I'm using AMD64 too.

Stable distributions only make updates between minor releases, not between major releases.
This avoid the introduction of regressions in other places.

Nevertheless, gnome-nettool 3.0.1 was released in January and there is no update in Ubuntu.
You can file a bug for getting that package into 11.10.

However, gnome-nettool 3.0.1 does not include the fix for this particular bug because the
solution implies a change in the UI. Therefore it was included in gnome-nettool 3.1, which is
is a development version of the next gnome 3.2 (not released yet).

I have upgraded to 12.04 beta and found that thisissue has been fixed. Yup
for those who are in 11.10, its still a problem.

I'm getting this bug too on an 11.10 Intel 64 bit system. Is there any word of a fix for 11.10 rather than having to upgrade to 12.04?

I think the only solution for Natty is to use ~mfisch/+archive/gnome-nettool PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mfisch/gnome-nettool

Then update database:
sudo apt-get update

Finally, upgrade your packages:
sudo apt-get upgrade

[Impact]
Customer cannot use gnome-netool to monitor network traffic.

[Development Fix]
This has been fixed in upstream, and precise and above.

[Stable Fix]
mfisch already has posted a package to his ppa with the fix backported from upstream, which seems to have been tested by quite a few users.

https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~mfisch/ubuntu/precise/gnome-nettool/multiple-ui-fixes/view/head:/debian/patches/10_fix_ui_layout.patch

Additionally, I have attached a debdiff to this issue.

[Test Case]
* The Mouseover text for tracert textbox should read "Enter the network address to trace route ..." .

* The tooltip for Lookup should say "domain", and not "network address"

* The network tool / ping tab have been resized to display more information

* In :Devices" page, "IP Information" table should be visible.

[Regression Potential]
There is very little potential for regression.

Thank you for work, we can't change strings in stable series though and it doesn't seem worth the work for the SRU team to keep doing such changes on oneiric where a new lts is out, unsubscribing sponsors and setting to wontfix for oneiric, feel free to reopen and subscribe sponsors again if you really think that should be SRUed and you get an update without string changes

Changed in gnome-nettool (Ubuntu Oneiric):
status: Triaged → Won't Fix
