Bug Description

Binary package hint: wine

The package "wine" installs a menu item under Application with the label "Wine" and a series of submenu with the voices
"Programs -> Accessories ->
Browse c:\Drive
Configure Wine
Uninstall Wine Software"

The question is that they aren' translated in Italian language.
First of all I think Wine entry should be replaced with "Wine Windows Emulator" in english ("Wine emulatore Windows" in Italian). The submenu items, translated in italian, should be:
"Programmi -> Accessori"
Sfoglia c:\Drive
Configura Wine
Disistalla il software Wine"

Tested with Hardy

The relevant file in the package is debian/wine.menu and it gets installed to /etc/xdg/menus/applications-merged

Here's the menu spec: http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/latest/ar01s04.html

I'm actually not sure how they're translated -- regular .desktop files can supply inline translations, or use gettext, but the .menu files seem to be handled differently.

Hi,

I'm closing this bug for the Ubuntu Translators as "Invalid" since Wine is in unverse and can't be translated via Launchpad. This bug should be forwarded upstream.

Thanks.

Milo: actually, there are quite some .desktop and .directory files here:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-branches/ubuntu/lucid/wine/lucid/files/head%3A/debian/

and I think these are not coming from upstream, but at least Debian-specific additions. So the proper solution - for now - would be to send patches against these.

@Gabor: yes, there are, like there is a branch in Launchpad for all
Ubuntu packages, but that does not mean translations are exposed on
Launchpad, or that we can handle them.

I don't know what is our policy in this case: do we have a policy to
handle universe translations in this way? The only policy I know is
that we do not handle translations of packages out of main.
Personally, I don't agree in doing it like this. Patches should be
sent upstream: is Debian the real upstream in this case?

Translations for Wine are handled also within their development
resources. Are those menus also in the upstream Wine project, or is
something we (Ubuntu) or Debian add?
I think we need to clarify those aspects first and then we can
understand how to supply patches or how we can handle those
translations.

Scott Ritchie (scottritchie) wrote :

Wine's app menu translations are Ubuntu-specific at this point: they're neither upstream at Wine nor in Rosetta.

I didn't update translations this cycle as my plan was to actually get rid of everything currently there except Wine itself:
 - "Browse C:\ Drive" was to be in Places (and thus a Gnome bookmark for their translation area),
 - "Configure Wine" was to be moved into the System menu with a new application (delayed due to Wine 1.2 delay)
 - "Programs" was going to be eliminated and just collapsed onto Wine
 - "Uninstall Wine software" was going to be removed all together and have its functionality moved into software center.
 - "Accessories" should be translated within Wine itself
 - "Notepad" is a proper noun that doesn't get translated

This is all delayed at this point, so for Lucid I'll accept translations and handle them manually for any remaining bits of the menu that need to be converted. Please post suggested translations here along with the language code.

hi Scott,

want to let you know that even with 100 % language translation like mine (french), the 1.1.42 menu in Lucid is not translated:

but there are two cases:
- first wine install: menu is created with wine->programs->accessories->notepad
                                                                        browse c:\drive

-then when user install a software: here translations is applied (wine->programmes-> ...)

So there are some duplicates: programs & programmes

Another comment about the German translation. I just checked your blog and there's a comment there that might be mistaken as translating "Programs" with "Zubehör" which would be wrong. "Programs" is "Programme" and "Accessories" is "Zubehör". The other difference is "Wine-Software" vs. "Wine Software" (hiven or no hiven) - the former is easier on the eyes.

I saw you delete a "\" from my patch. (it was "Esplora l'unità virtuale C:\\")

The "\\" is needed when the C:\ is at the end of the string, instead it appears "Esplora l'unità virtuale C:" on screen, as it is now.

I think you didn't understand my point, the original string in english
is (and it appears as)
"Browse C:\ Drive"
but the Italian one appears to be
"Esplora unità C:"
on screen now.

This is because you removed the double \ (\\) at the end of the
italian translated string.

This needs a double \ because the C:\ is placed at the end of the
string in the italian translated one and the parser misunderstand the
\ characters.

If you put
"Esplora unità C:\"
it'll appear as "Esplora unità C:" on screen.

If you put
 "Esplora unità C:\\"
it'll correctly appear as Esplora unità C:\" on screen.

In german the submenu actually is translated, and as far as I remember it already was translated in Karmic.
However, the two "Programme" folders are not merged, but managed separately. This effectively duplicates this menu entry, with one menu only containing the accessoires (or "Zubehör") folder and the other one containing user-installed software.
The attached screenshot should illustrate this problem.
