The current version of glabels in Jaunty repository, release 2.2.3, is not usable. Fields will disappear when changing the font, bar codes are not editable, etc. Release 2.2.4 also has problems.

Please upgrade glabels to release to 2.2.5.

As stated above. GLabels in unusable in Jaunty.

Labels created with previous releases and new designs are rendering incorrectly, Texts is misaligned and moving on window size changes. Design elements are disappearing when being clicked on.

As mentioned, the current repository version is 2.2.3, this needs updating to 2.2.5 which, according to the developer, addresses gtk issues.

I am the upstream developer for glabels. 2.2.3 and 2.2.4 are definitely completely broken on 9.04. Please update to 2.2.5 as soon as possible.

Getting bug fixes pushed downstream has been a long standing issue. It does no one any good if I fix bugs but they do not get pushed to the end users for months or even years. Is there anything I can do to help facilitate the process, short of packaging it myself for each distribution?

I would love to see this issue resolved as soon as possible. I use glables frequently to create business cards, lables, stickers, etc... and because of the issues with glables 2.2.3 under jaunty, I am no longer able to even use the program. I've resorted to fudging my projects in OOo Writer for now, but this is not a desirable long-term solution, since all my previous work already exists as .glables files.

I'll be compiling from source for now so I can get at my files again, but i hope that this can get resloved soon so i can use the package manager!

I can again use glabels although I still have problems with cut and pasting. As long as I manually type the entries and only use the backspace to erase (no highlighting with the mouse), I can create. edit, and print labels again.

Ryan, read the post before yours. It says it's fixed for ubuntu karmic
9.10 (beta so far). Try it out:

To say that the fix for an application involves installation of a beta of the next operating system is unacceptable!

The 2.2.5 upgrade for glabels has been out for months, what is the reason that glabels for Jaunty has not been updated?

Mark Shuttleworth at the recent LinuxCon conference:

However, he went on to argue that if Linux is to broaden its appeal then more focus needs to be placed on the user interface - a significant area of interest for Canonical-sponsored Ubuntu, which has a user experience team dedicated to discovering how people interact with its software.

It was an approach, he argued, that needed to be adopted by more open-source developers. "If the developer is in the room, they have to say nothing. It's the shut the f**k up protocol. You sit and watch someone struggle with the software that you've so lovingly produced."

http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/351907/shuttleworth-linux-developers-should-shut-the-f-k-up

In this case, the fault does not seem to be with the developer as much as with Mr. Shuttleworth's own team.

To most Ubuntu users, the version in the repository is the only version. The fact that Ubuntu has not kept up with upstream maintenance releases, reflects badly on Ubuntu, but to the average user it completely trashes glabels and my reputations, even though the problems have been long since fixed. Why couldn't Ubuntu update to 2.2.5 six months ago in Jaunty?

If Ubuntu cannot make a commitment to keep up with the upstream stable branch, I would rather they didn't package it all.

Well if one of you could become sort of independent, learn debian
packaging and help around that would be great. I bet a lot of users
would benefit from your contribution!
1. If you really think this package is worth updating AND that the
updated version is a bugfix only, without new features, then learn how
to make a patch and ask for a stable release update (aka SRU - there's
an article in ubuntu wiki).
2. New releases aren't always bug free, so stable releases wouldn't be
that stable if ubuntu introduced updates with bugs. Also,
volunteer-packages can't keep track of everything, they're real life
people with priorities. I'd at least thank them for trying to keep up
and wait patiently (or make a patch and try it myself), not put them
down!
3. You could also make a ppa (personal package archive) in launchpad
an make your own package and help others keep up with new software,
regardless of the new features and how stable the new software version
is.
This is just my opinion of course. :-)

Here is what I do not understand: You (Savvas Radevic) created a 2.2.5 package for glabels and I gratefully pulled it from your experimental ppa back in May 2009. Why was this not placed in the backports release for Jaunty?

What does " Declined for Jaunty by Chris Coulson" mean? Does it mean what that despite the developer fixing the defect and a volunteer packaging it for release, a Ubuntu team member can arbitrarily refuse to release it to the repositories?

It is a disservice to the developer and the Ubuntu users to release a known critically defective old version of an application in the repository and not replace it with the working version released from the developer.

Savvas Radevic (medigeek) wrote :

I'm not involved with ubuntu nor canonical.
Because it was meant to be experimental, I used the experimental ppa.
I did not have the time to finish testing it for a stable release, due
to my exams so I started prioritising my patches and ppa packages. I
removed it from my ppa because it was just a quick copy of the old
package source with the new software/upstream release (as far as I can
remember).
Since then I have had exam periods. I would have finished the job if I
had a working i-net connection at home, which I stopped to maintain my
budget.
That's why I said that you (anyone) should become independent.

Now, why did Chris denied it, I don't know. On the other hand it's in
ubuntu 9.10 and that was my personal goal.

Here is what I would do: you (the jaunty lovers) could at least run
9.10 as a live cd, test the new version of glabels there, then poke
Chris and ask him if he would backport (or update) for jaunty, or
explain you how to request a backport.

First, I would like to thank Savvas Radevic for briefly posting his experimental package of gLabels 2.2.5. I have been using it on Jaunty since May without any issues. The released version that came with Jaunty did not run.

Jaunty still has one year left in its support life. If Mr. Chris Coulson is associated with Canonical, perhaps he can best explain why he made the decision to not replace a defective application distributed by Canonical with a working one.

Yes, "become Independent"; this has been the Open Source & Linux way. I am not criticizing the statement but this was not the Ubuntu / Canonical promise for desktop Linux.

I have 2 machines running Jaunty and I don't plan to update them to Karmic anytime soon. Could somebody be nice enough (evince?) to create a PPA gLabels - as they are so many (KeypassX PPA team, Tomboy PPA Stable, etc.), on Launchpad for Jaunty, so anyone could update the software. Thanks. And if I did not find it, point me to the right direction please.
