I am not sure if a new bug should be started but this is related I think.
(Hardy) I have a LCD Acer x193w ATI radeon 8500LE (R200)
Both during boot and shut down I get a floating message "input not supported"
BUt Ubuntu does loads
I just switch my drivers to ATI as the Ubuntu howto shows to do it fixed the Xorg
Now in addition to the input not supported I now also have a green screen just before Ubuntu LOads up.

What I am told it is due to refresh rate that problems but I loaded the figure recommended in the booklet from acer?

Hopefully this problem will get fix it seems to be happening left and right...

showgun, from what you describe your issue doesn't seem to be related to Guido's, so please file a new bug. See http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Reporting for directions on reporting bugs and what info to include.

Guido, thanks for confirming the issue is fixed on Intrepid. Marking that as fixed, and opening a Hardy task in case anyone would like to look into identifying the patch that fixed it (by doing a bisect between the hardy and intrepid versions of the driver).

Try run Ubuntu Gutsy in Live Cd mode , (It's work, if not how install ubuntu in your PC) open a and:
$ sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
copy the xorg.conf on a floppy:
reboot your Pc without CD mode and start in vesa mode and copy xorg.conf of floppy on xorg in Hardy or Intrepid and reboot.

Regarding the Samsung SyncMaster, this seems to be the same problem as in my reported bug #255561. I'll try and see if generating an xorg.conf as above will work. (Using a floppy won't be necessary, I could just mount the partition with my /home directories and copy it there, probably as root after doing

  sudo su -

I previously tried editing the xorg.conf based on ones generated by Knoppix and Mandriva live CDs. An issue is whether the generated xorg.conf file(s) will result in H/V sweep rates within the monitor's allowable range; another is whether the new software will attempt to override the xorg.conf settings.

I followed the advice of JacobS to boot an earlier Live CD - in particular, I booted a 7.04 live CD, which worked, mounted my original /home volume on a mount point I created, and saved the xorg.conf generated by 7.04 into my old home directory. Then I rebooted into 8.04.1, and copied the 7.04 xorg.conf into /etc/X11. After rebooting, I was able to start up in the maximum 1024x768 mode the monitor handles.

This worked on both systems I used this monitor for - see bug #255561 and bug #217004 - regarding a Dell PowerEdge 400SC and a gBox computer.

I've attached the working xorg.conf file for the Dell system.

This bug is NOT fixed with Intrepid 8.10 for my gBox computer with a S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] display controller, connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 570S TFT display. (see bug #217004).

I downloaded the 8.10 desktop ISO, and booted that on this system as a live CD. The system was unable to determine the controller and display type, and defaulted to low-resolution mode. I did not proceed further, but will try again by copying the xorg.conf file generated by running 7.04 as a live CD into the 8.10 /etc/X11 on ramdisk (this worked for 8.04 in a full install).

I have not tried booting on the other system I have connected to the Samsung display, as yet.

This is also still NOT fixed on my Dell PowerEdge 400SC with the same Samsung SyncMaster 570S TFT display, and an ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27) vga controller.

I booted the desktop 8.10 Intrepid CD, as a live CD, and in this case the system booted completely and displayed in 800x600 low-res mode. Once I did that, I was able to copy the xorg.conf file (which I had generated earlier by booting a 7.04 live CD) over the Intrepid version, and then restart X by typing ctrl-alt-BS. Then the display started up in 1024x768 mode, as desired.

On my gBox computer with a S3 Inc. VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] display controller, connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 570S TFT display, mentioned above, the hack in the previous comment does not work. The reason is that X won't even start in low-graphics mode, and it doesn't seem to be possible to switch to a console, so copying xorg.conf isn't possible. The Samsung display occasionally shows warning popups which states that it can't handle the current output mode from the S3 adapter.

Peter Belew (peterbe) wrote :

Also, I experience a similar problem on my Averatec 3280 laptop, which has a VIA Technologies, Inc. S3 Unichrome Pro VGA Adapter (rev 01). Again, the output of the S3 adapter appears never to be right for the display, even trying low-graphics mode. (I'm typing this report on the same computer, running Debian 4.0, by the way) (Again, I'm trying to run the desktop 8.10 disk as a live CD). The hack of using the xorg.conf file from an earlier version of Ubuntu doesn't work in this case as well, since I can't get to a console to copy the file.

I have an earlier bug report regarding the same laptop, bug #186103, trying to install with an alternate install disk for Hardy. The problem appears to be the same. Note that this laptop and the gBox have S3 displays, though those are different models.

For comparison, I tried booting a Fedora 9 live CD in all 3 systems I mentioned above (the Dell server, the gBox with an S3 display controller, and the Averatec laptop with an S3 display controller.

I was unable to complete booting the 2 systems with S3 controllers - the system hung completely after a couple of minutes or less.

I was able to boot the Dell system, which came up in the low-res 600x800
mode, as was the case with the LTS Ubuntu system. I was able to use the xorg.conf file from the Ubuntu 7.04 system, as above; I did remove all but the sections for the display. This system does not normally use xorg.conf - the configuration is entirely different from the Debian/Ubuntu config. - but this did override the default systems, and I was able to restart X (ctrl-alt-BS) and get into 1024x768 mode, the most this Samsung monitor will support.

Possibly this information will be useful for upstream developers.

Note that the CD, when booted as a live CD, *appears* to have the correct drivers. However, the drivers for the S3 cards seem unable to determine a workable screen resolution for the Samsung SyncMaster 570S TFT display, or for the Averatec display. I have not found a way to try to install a modified xorg.conf file, which worked for hardy.

With Ubuntu 8.04 and 8.04.1, the system comes up in 800x600 mode, and changing xorg.conf can get X to restart in 1024x768 mode, the maximum for the Samsung display.
