Bug Description

Latino students typically use two last names: the father's last name and the mother's last name. There is no place in the student entry dialog to enter this second last name.

Wouldn't this generally be stored as a middle name? How does APS do it?

APS usually hyphenates the two last names together, but not always
(they are quite inconsistent on this). Using a middle name wouldn't
work. Latin American students have first names, middle names, and two
last names.

What APS does isn't really the point, though, since they are using US
assumptions about what a name is that would not apply in Latin America
(or Spain). SchoolTool aims to be international, yes?

Functionally, what do we need to do with these names?

Is there any reason one couldn't put Elkner-Alfaro as the last name? :)

Which name do we sort by?

We should be checking in with Douglas on this, since he will have more
insight than I will. Elkner-Alfaro is an example of adapting the
situation to a new cultural context, like I mentioned earlier. It
wouldn't be acceptable in a Spanish speaking country because that's
not how they do things. Sorting should occur on the first of the last
names, I believe (we can confirm easily with Douglas). -- jeff

Douglas says that most applications in El Salvador don't have separate fields for each last name. It doesn't seem like a high priority to me because it isn't clear when, for example, we would only want to use the second last name (or sort by the second last name, etc). If and when we tackle this, it will probably be as part of a larger name refactoring, which is probably necessary to deal with variations in name order. I definitely don't want to just tack it onto what we've got now.

We certainly don't need it this year, but since we are a program with
over 98% of our students from Latin America, we are a good test case
for it.

My hunch is the reason why most programs in El Salvador don't support
it is because they are imported US programs.

Wishlist is a good place for it. We can certainly wait.
