Files not syncing

Bug Description

I have started my initial sync after installing Ubuntu One.

Ubuntu One has the status of "Syncing" in the sys-tray icon, however no files have yet appeared in the Ubuntu One directory. It has so far been running for 45 minutes.

This CPU is running between 35-50% continuously.

I am running Vista 64bit.

Is there a way of seeing what it is doing?

Thanks
Chris

I left it syncing over night. There are still no files and the cpu is approx 40%.

I tried it on another computer and that completed within 2 minutes.

Chris,

Unfortunatly Windows does not provide an easy way for you to know what the different processes of the app are doing. I recommend you to install Process explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx) and get information about the UbuntuOneClient.exe process as well as the child process that it starts (called main.exe) which is the process used to perform the sync.

With that information we will be able to get closer to fix this issue.

It definitely appears to be the main.exe component that is taking all the
cpu.

thanks

Chris,
Do you have a separate admin account that you used to install Ubuntu One?
I have XP and my usual account has limited privileges, so I used another account to install Ubuntu One. Running Ubuntu One from the limited account successfully creates a Sync Folder, but doesn't actually sync anything (cpu load is ~60% on Intel T2300). Status is Syncing after over 12 hours with 7 MB of data.

40-50% CPU load, "Syncing" state and not synced files.

After starting sync there is CPU activity for a short while (UbuntuOneClient.exe starts a main.exe) and when main has stopped the popup menu says 'Synced', but neither the files in the cloud are in my local folder nor the files from the local folder are in the cloud.

It has not successfully synced in two days.

It works for me now -- in XP!

I had the same problem -- not syncing in XP, no problem in ubuntu, no problem with tomboy syncing in XP. I have waited for two months for a fix. I finally decided to give it a try myself.

This is how I did it -- It's actually quite simple:

Delete or rename the "Ubuntu One" folder/dir in "My Documents" in XP and sync. (I also removed and re-added the XP machine from UbuntuClient before I synced.)

To sync big files from XP seems to cause problems. I tested with a file of 48MB (48,795KB to be exact), UbuntuOne created a .90853.... file of 45MB (44,892KB to be exact) and did not seem to be able to go any further. There seems to be no problem with a file of 20MB I tested.

Something else I found out that might be useful to get sync going: to stop a sync (when you get stuck), kill main.exe (killing UbuntuOneClient.exe wont help. main.exe would still be running even when UbuntuOneClient.exe is gone.)

It worked for me at least. I hope it helps some people.

Is it possible to add a function for downloading a whole directory (zipped maybe) from https://one.ubuntu.com/files/? (Currently a directory can only be shared or deleted but not downloaded. A file can be downloaded.)

This would allow a computer without UbuntuOneClient to more easily access/use a bunch of files, for a presentation that use a set of documents for example. Skydrive can do this (download a directory) but uploading a directory in skydrive is a pain.

Thanks a lot for providing the Ubuntu One service!

@Manuel I now think that my problem was a network issue. I was on a corporate LAN on 4/2, when I was unable to sync. I've tried today with the same install on a broadband connection and it's worked fine. It looks like it's probably a firewall issue that's not being reported in a meaningful way.

So, to be clear, the client is working fine for me with a broadband connection and local firewall software (McAfee). When I connect using the same laptop via. my corporate LAN, it's unable to sync and the error is "TypeError: <type 'str'> is not JSON serializable".

I had this problem too. Mu's solution at #23 worked for me - Windows XP without administrator privileges. When you first install the Beta, do the following:

1. Open preferences

2. log in to your Ubuntu One account through the dialogue box

3. right-click the taskbar icon and select Sync (even though there is nothing to sync yet - this creates the 'Ubuntu One' folder in My Documents)

4. then copy the files you want synced into the 'Ubuntu One' folder

5. right-click and select 'Synchronize Now' again

6. It should now sync

It still works for me. However I found out the following in the meantime.

An empty directory/folder cannot be removed unless I delete it from XP and the unbuntuone web at the same time.
This also means, if I delete a directory from XP, the files inside the directory and subdirectories disappear but the directory structure (dir and subdirs) remains at the ubuntu web (and reappears in XP after another sync).

I probably could live with this tiny bug. The main problem is the slow response -- It takes 2-4 minutes (about 1-3 minutes between "fetching metadata..." and the actual syncing files) to sync a virtually empty directory. (My network should be quite OK I think since a similar sync in dropbox is almost instant.)

I have one machine with WinXPProSP3(32bit), the same machine dual booting with Ubuntu Natty (64bit), a WinXPSP3 (32bit) Laptop, and a netbook with Win7Starter.

To test Ubuntu One against Dropbox which I currently use on all these machines I wrote a small simple text file.
First I created and wrote to it in Ubuntu. (A single line stating machine and OS)
Then rebooted the machine under XP and wrote to it with notepad in XP. (Again a single line as before.)
Then I wrote to it with the XP Laptop (Work machine, same single line with identity details.)
Then I wrote to it with the netbook. (Same formula.)

Now all machines *except* the dual boot WinXP machine see all lines.

The dual boot WinXP machine, has shown other files I have attempted to replicate the problem with, but all it sees of that original test file is the first line and the one it wrote itself. The following two lines do not show. It also shows a *fragment* file, which none of the others sees. This file (TestingUbubtuOne.txt.u1partial) actually contains the entire correct text tile contents.

Other files have shown, been edited, deleted Etc. The only differences I know of was the first file was created under Ubunto, the rest have come from the various windows machines. However I doubt this is significant. It appears more like a temporary file problem.

Two other workstations on same P2P LAN run 'Win7' and 'Ubuntu 11.04' without U1 sync issues.

The symptoms with the XP machine are:

First sign of an issue, following a 'complaint free' installation is when selecting 'Open Synced Folder' from U1 Menu in SysTray >

"The path 'C:\Documente and Settings\Admin\My Documents\Ubuntu One' not found"

... so i add it manually. Add some files to that directory via drag and drop, and select 'Syncronize Now' from U1 Menu in SysTray, and am immediately confronted with a 'PopUp' informing.

"An error courred [sic] when trying to retrieve your credentials. This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix the problem."

... with the following ongoing status

 - U1 Menu in SysTray, 'Status' says 'Syncing', whereas it was previously 'Idle'
 - UbuntuOneClient.exe consuming 91-99% of CPU
 - Allowed to run overnight for 8 hours without any transfer of files.
 - Had to 'kill' the process to stop it.

De-installed and re-installed again ... same result.

I had the same problem on a computer, running Windows 7 64bit.
The submitted solution (right-clicking it and running it as Administrator) solved the issue.

Same problem.
Initially all my files where synced ok when I installed UbuntuOne for Windows (Vista) -more than 1Gb.
Now changes from another machines connected are not synced in my Windows machine. And the other way round, changes in Windows machine are not expanded neither to UbuntuOne cloud, nor to the other machines connected (Android, Ubuntu).
The user is an administrator (!?!).

This problem started for me when I removed my workcomputer from my account and then later tried to add it again.
Before it worked smoothly, but now it won't sync at all. First I had bug #682379, but that one was easely solved with the help of the FAQ (nr 7).

I've got windows 7 with firewall and all other things related to a work-computer.
Running as administrator didn't work either.
