Bug Description

When using 12.04, X will crash and send me to the login screen. This can happen when working, or when the computer is idle.

I'm using version 295.33. I remember getting the same crash occuring on 11.10 when I upgraded to version 295.20 [version before 295.33], but this may or may not be the same bug.

Here are a few lines from the end of dmesg:

I have a similar issue with nvidia drivers where X does not start at all and Ubuntu goes into login screen. Downgrading to 295.20 does nothing.

Is something wrong with the latest kernel, because the only way to boot is by using the older kernel (3.0.0+ in my case), not with the latest.
Hope it helps.

This issue should be assigned to someone by now and he/she should be working round the clock to fix this, there are litterally millions of pc's using nVidia hardware which all potentially have this bug.
People are loosing work because of this and it really pisses them off!
I've lost hours of work aswell, which results in litterally throwhing money down the drain.

Make this top priority it's been open for a month now!

@nosaer82 I could not agree more with you, it make the distribution useless!

I personally updated to 302.07, but it stills happends (but less frequently, or maybe I just stopped using flash/video)

There may be a solution here:
http://techcat.brainfull.net/?p=835 (spanish)

The suggested solution is to add the following ppa:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates
sudo apt-get update

Then force the version 295.40 in synaptic.

Hey guys,

I was having this issue too using Ubuntu 12.04 and the 295.40 NVidia drivers.

I added

Option "UseEvents" "False"

In the "Device" section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file .

It seems i'm not having any more crashes.. at least for now..

Cheers

I have had success running ubuntu 2D to avoid this. However I finally got annoyed enough with other bugs in 2D that I switched to KDE, which runs like a champ (although the default fonts need to be replaced first thing after install.) So I suspect Unity/Compiz is doing something the nvidia driver does not expect, given that both 2D and KDE are stable with the same driver.

I'm using multiple monitors on a Quadro FX based laptop with a docking station, which does not work with nouveau.
It was running perfectly fine before 12.04.
This bugs basically makes my laptop, which is my daily workstation, useless and I'm piratically forced to reinstall my machine with a previous version of Ubuntu.
It isn't reliable enough to work with it and I can't afford loosing work again.

I've also tried using 295.40 and 302.07, both contain the same bug (assuming it's the nvidia driver).

Still baffled that this bug isn't being addressed yet. There are 14 duplicate bug reports and almost 200 people are mentioning being affected by this bug and still nobody from Canonical, as far I can tell, is looking into this.

Besides the trouble it's causing me, regular desktop people are ditching Ubuntu (and Linux) and give this potential great desktop a bad reputation which it cannot afford.
You can't expect people who just want a working machine to hack into there system just because they upgraded to the newest version. Even if they tried to be save by using a LTS version for the sake of stability.

The fact that the bug exists within a LTS release is questionable, but the fact it's not being addressed after a Month (Even before the actual release), even for a free OS, is regrettable.

This really should be top priority not for my sake but the general acceptance of Linux as a great Windows and OS/X alternative.
Canonical has taken this burden upon them and shouldn't let it slip.

I installed the 290.10 using the x86_64 package downloaded off the NVIDIA
website. I had no crash ever since.
I stressed my system by playing multiple YouTube and Vimeo Flash HD clips
in parallel (that used to crash everytime), no problem!
If you don't need the latest changes in the drivers, this is a very viable
solution!

I am sorry about the issues you are having, but please, let's be consistent on what issue we are talking about in this particular thread. There are multiple possible reasons for X to crash, and it strikes me that you clearly refer to another issue than the one described here. I was having this issue (reported one of the duplicates), my X crashed approximately every 20 minutes. After having switched to nouveau (the open source driver), my box ran fine for two weeks without a single crash. This particular issue seems to be related to my specific video card, I have colleagues running the nvidia-current on other cards just fine.

No, this is not the same issue, the X-server crash results in a lost session setting you back to the login screen.
The 30x.xx driver series has nothing to do with this bug, it's not even in the repository.

@pelleke
I do have more machines running different kinds of nVidia hardware, I did not encounter this issue with any other of them, but then again I haven't used them for more than maximum 1 hour at a time either, so can't confirm there not affected.

I'm using a Quadro FX 3800M on the affected machine (G92 Core) and it's my daily workstation, I have another machine equipped with a 8800GTS 512 which has the same core, but still hasn't crashed, but again it isn't used a lot.

I'm another user affected by this with an 8800GT that has been rock solid stable in prior Ubuntu releases. I'm running the gnome shell fallback mode. The current, current-updates and x-swat repository versions all resulted in random crashes back to the login screen.

I've tried using the noveau driver instead but it increasingly loses its marbles over time. After about 8 hours of uptime it starts flickering random bits of random windows in random places on the screen, and gets progressively worse. It also hangs the X server inputs for a few seconds while doing this.

Consequently neither binary nor noveau driver provide a usable desktop.

I had Blender3d+Stellarium (OpenGL apps) launched for some time + some youtube vids in 1080p + playing around with windows in gnome-shell, + left PC for some time till screen-lock to see if it will wake screen/gpu back up (freezes sometime occured there before) to somehow stress the GPU / test various cases - no effect.
And then I got thrown back to login screen doing nothing, so it's quite unpredictable.

I was having problems with the 290.40 driver so i added x-swat ppa. I'm now on 295.53. With the 290.40 driver i couldn't log into either Unity or Gnome shell. 295.53 solved that problem but i'm having random xorg crashes that bring me to the log in screen. I have lost some work because of this.

I have tried the open source driver but i have problems setting up my dual monitor set up with them so i am hoping that this problem gets fixed soon. Is this an issue with the drivers or is it a Ubuntu problem? Also, is anything currently happening with the problem?

I came back to free driver because of this bug whith proprietary drivers and stay like that for a few days whithout any bug and when Alberto Milone asked for the kern.log after a crash, I switch to proprietary driver (current version) and I've no bug since I do that.

So I don't understand why but it worked...

Yesterday installed Opensuse 12.1 and all fine with default install of Nouveau driver, installing nvidia-current on Opensuse results in same random logouts, and swapping 9800gt back to 9500gt problem disappears.

Both cars work flawlessly under Windows XP and Windows 7, so can assure the GFX cards are ok.

Daniel Dadap (ddadap) wrote :

Hi Alberto,

There seem to be a lot of reports here, and it's hard to tell whether they're all related. We are currently investigating reports of a regression with very recent versions of Flash where the X server can crash when playing videos, which it sounds like many of the users here are reporting, but there are many other reports here which sound completely unrelated to Flash, including the post from the original reporter.

The root cause of the Flash regression is not yet known, but in the meantime, we have found that it's possible to work around this particular issue by disabling Flash's use of VDPAU for hardware acceleration of video playback.

It sounds like a lot of people here are experiencing general stability problems with Unity and the NVIDIA driver, and using other desktop sessions, older drivers, or different GPU hardware/drivers avoids these issues. I haven't personally seen issues like this on any of my machines running Unity on Precise, nor am I aware of any reports like this coming from our internal testing on various distributions, including Ubuntu.

I understand that the reports are of crashes which are random and sporadic in nature, but any efforts to isolate specific workflows or actions that seem to trigger the crashes or at least make it more likely that X or the desktop session will crash so that these problems can be reproduced on demand will make it much easier to investigate what is happening. If there appear to be multiple problems that share similar symptoms ("Nvidia driver causes xorg crash" can describe a multitude of issues), they should preferably be separated out into distinct bug reports. (It also seems like at least some people on this bug report are reporting issues with non-NVIDIA drivers and/or hardware: these reports, at least, definitely don't belong in an "Nvidia driver causes xorg crash" report.)

ragtag (ragtag-ragtag) wrote :

I think this bug is related to anything that uses the graphics card for accelleration, be it 3D games, Flash, Blender or Chromium. It also seems to only happen on specific graphics cards, and I'm not 100% sure they're all from NVIDIA. I had a similar thing happen on my laptop with an intgrate Intel 950 card, just after 12.04 release, but that problem vanished soon after. I know there was some issues with the Intel graphics driver on release of 12.04, so maybe that is what fixed it. I don't have this problem at all on

I think the only way you can re-create this bug is by having hardware that causes this bug, and using any software that uses hardware acceleration for a short while. It doesn't seem to be triggered by any specific action beyond that. I get this consistently on Quadro FX 3700, but there is no one thing I do to cause it, and have even had it happened once when I stepped away from the computer for a short while. Generally I have Chromium and the Gnome terminal window open, but have had it happen with just a terminal and Blender.

I've done multiple clean installs of 12.04, and I've done a clean install of Fedora 17 with Gnome 3, and had the same bug happen there. It seems like a tricky bug to figure out, as it's not caused by any specific action, other than a combination of specific hardware and using hardware acceleration, and possibly Gnome.

I'm sorry to bother you, but I was seeing that the newest NVIDIA driver
seems to be working for many people who are having the log out issue. I
have a problem in that I can't figure out how to manually install the
NVIDIA driver now that I have it downloaded.

Is there a resource you could point me to that would show me how to get
that done?

Thank you,

Like danrgmc above in comment #120, I just tried nvidia driver v302.17 also (via xorg-edgers ppa) but found it seg faulted within a couple of hours. My 8600 GT card has worked fine for years with ubuntu but this seg fault started with Ubuntu 12.04 at nvidia v295.40 and has occurred for all the v295.* and v302.* versions that Nvidia have released since. Luckily the nouveau driver works fine for me (in 3d Unity and Gnome Shell).

This bug has been reported various places in launchpad in many guises (most users don't understand what the bug is - they just get logged out of their DE) and has been reported all over the forums etc but I can not recall anywhere where Canonical and/or Nvidia acknowledge that they recognise this serious bug and are working on a fix. Can somebody at Canonical please reassure us that this issue is being actively looked at by somebody?

I don't know of a good way to downgrade though, I just removed nvidia-current and nvidia-current-updates, blacklisted nouveau module as well as plucked it from initramfs and installed the 275.43 nvidia drivers from nvidias homepage. Obviously that kind of hack won't survive a kernel upgrade, I just did it to check if an older nvidia driver would indeed alleviate the troubles.

So I am wondering if these bugs get fixed in an update ie one day update manager will be the ubuntu bug messiah and magically fix the bug? Is that the way it works? Or do I have to be more proactive and look for and apply the bug fixes? Seriously considering going back to 11.10 where things worked. Two months down the road, still experiencing daily crashes I found this thread. Tried all the suggestions here to no avail. I even attempted to generate my own stack trace so I could post it here and maybe help, but I didn't really have time to figure it all out properly. Then I lost two days of work to a crash and I finally couldn't wait any longer.

I formatted back to 11.10 and I've been happily productive ever since without a single crash. I recommend everyone experiencing this problem who requires stability from their machines to do the same until this bug gets fixed.

Hi everybody,

Like I said earlier, I've personally been using Precise with Unity on one of my main test machines since the alpha stage, and haven't seen any X crashes that weren't due to bugs that have since been fixed, and I certainly haven't seen random, frequent X crashes like what seems to be described here. That machine has its drivers and GPUs swapped frequently, and for as long as I have been using Precise, I have always used 295 or later drivers on it. (Compiz does seem to crash frequently, but it always recovers, without disturbing any of the applications or windows I have open.)

In addition to my own personal experience, which is obviously a tiny sample, the driver goes through extensive automated and manual testing on many different hardware configurations, and on a variety of distributions, including Ubuntu 12.04. We haven't seen any issues that cause X to crash sporadically, as seems to be described here.

With that in mind, we're obviously missing something important that's required to reproduce this bug (if it is even just a single bug: it's hard to tell, since the symptom is fairly generic). If we can collect as much detail as possible from everybody who is affected, that would help us understand what is happening better. The more information you provide, the better our chances for reproducing the issue at NVIDIA. Please provide as many of the following as possible:

1) An nvidia-bug-report.log file, generated immediately after a crash. This can be generated by running the script `nvidia-bug-report.log.sh`, which is included as part of the driver install. The script requires superuser privileges to collect system information, so you should run it with sudo. The script will save a file called nvidia-bug-report.log.gz to your current working directory.
2) A detailed description of what you were doing at the time of the crash.
3) If you are familiar with using gdb, stack traces from the crashing server, with X debug symbols installed, would be very helpful. If you're not familiar with gdb, but want to try to provide a stack trace anyway, you can try following these steps:
    a) Install X debug symbols (sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-core-dbg)
    b) Start your desktop session, as normal
    c) For good measure, capture the DSO load base of the NVIDIA driver, in case it shows up in the stack trace of the crashing server. (grep nvidia_drv.so /proc/`pidof X`/maps) - you may need to do this as root. Stash this information away, and if nvidia_drv.so shows up in your backtrace when you get one, submit it along with everything else.

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for the additional information.

This problem has been reported and Engineering is actively investigating the issue. We aim to fix this for our upcoming 304.x driver in July, but as you know schedules can change.

I have added myself to the bug report so I will be notified when this is fixed, and I will notify you at that time.

So if it is acceptable with you, I will close this support case and will inform you when the fix is available.

Best regards,
Mike

This bug has been around from 11.04 for me. I have Nvidia QuadroFX3800M in HP 8740w Mobile Workstation. I have basically given up on Ubuntu on my workstation. I have found this bug with all fresh installs and with all versions of Nvidia drivers from Ubuntu and Nvidia directly. OS has other stability issues without the Nvidia drivers (though these may be related). Instead of adding new features lets get this OS more stable. The Stability has never been as good as 9.10 in a long while. I am using a netbook with 10.04 that works amazingly well (though thers no Broadcom Xtal HD acceleration driversfor Ubuntu). Macs are beginning to look a lot more attractive and Ubuntu has such potential. :-(

I continue to experience this bug irrespective of which graphics driver I have installed. In my case, whenever I am using the keyboard the system is at risk of a crash. I know this because on this particular machine, I rarely use the keyboard as it is being used primarily as a virtualisation server, however, when I use the keyboard, a crash will happen quite quickly, this seems to be more likely if I have typed a number key or a period sign.

This machine can stay stable for days, or even weeks provided that the keyboard is not used.

I know it is a desperate solution but it worked. Hope it helps.

I know I could have attached log and more infos about my crashes, but I figured that after all these logs people have submitted so far, that it would be pretty much of the same... since we all experience the same problem.

The issue might be on NVidia's side... but the way Ubuntu is dealing with this is highly unprofessional.. if that issue what happening on Windows, you can be sure that this issue would be resolved relatively quickly. Personally, in more than 15 years of computing, and the majority of it with Microsoft OSes, I have never seen a problem stick for so long.

Fortunately for me, I just joined in, but seeing that this bug is still here after so long... I dunno...

Look, NVidia isn't a 3rd or 4th player in the video card industry... So you can be sure there is a lot of people running NVidia's card... this cannot be ignored like this. At least, make the default selection to Ubuntu 2D, so that people joining in aren't experiencing problems right after they reboot on their first install. This really give a bad opinion about the product.

Fortunately, I've been around and played many times with Linux in the past, going back to kernel 1.x, so I'm more forgiving and my past experiences taught me to choose ATi when building a computer to use with Linux. Unfortunately, I didn't planned on running it when I built this one a couple of years ago.

I would have also thought that NVidia might have stepped up their game and finally get some work done on their linux driver... seems the open source project might get there faster.

But we are straying outside the subject... just wanted to voice out my thoughts on the matter... If I had been a totally new linux user, trying Ubuntu 12.04 and having problems after first boot... it would have certainly be enough to make me put the windows dvd back in and re-install.

Regarding the crashes, I decided to give a try to Ubuntu 2d, and seems like my crashes are gone. Ever since I switched to it yesterday, I haven't had a single crash.

And I have had Photoshop opened since, did plenty of work without losing anything, with my browser opened and using it when I needed.

I noticed there was a couple of important packages that was updated yesterday, with gnome that was automatically added in an apt-get upgrade. Haven't tried it yet, since I kinda like unity, and it's running great now...

Really happy about this work-around, because I wouldnt have installed the Nouveau drivers, since it probably wouldnt run so well with Photoshop extended... Haven't tried, but I get that feeling.

So this solution is very good for me, only losing a bit of eye candy, but I wasn't using the 3d part of compiz, just some extra visuals...

But if I were working at Ubuntu, I would really be concerned about this issue.... in those 4-5 months the bug existed, you might have lost quite a few potential customers... those that will try linux for the first time and get this issue will most certainly go back to windows, or try a different distro.

All in all, I must say that Linux/Ubuntu made some really nice improvements since the last time I tried it... this might just be the time when I will leave Windows fo...

Sorry if there is any confusion, but the issue I believe you are referring to, which we do have an internal reproduction of, is not known to necessarily be the same issue as what people are describing here. We believe that some people on this thread might be affected by this issue, but as I said earlier, the reports on this thread conflict with each other on many levels, and at this time, I find it hard to believe that everybody reporting here is actually experiencing exactly the same problem.

This is why, despite the seemingly similar reports here, it is important that as much detail about the specific problem each person is experiencing be provided. I should note that the reproduction we have in house of the issue that we believe may be related to some of the reports here is on a single system so far: attempts to reproduce the problem on other systems so far have failed; we do not yet understand what is specific to this system that allows it to reproduce the issue while others do not. The person who eventually reproduced the issue internally went through dozens of systems before finding the one that finally reproduced it.

Also, the issue we have reproduced internally has specific reproduction steps. The reports here lack good reproduction steps. For reference, the specific reproduction steps given are:

Repro steps (A):
1. Open Firefox and play video from the link http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flash/articles/vidtemplate-engage-with-flash.html
2. Make it full screen
3. Just keep moving the mouse cursor over the video; after some time, the X server will crash.

Repro steps (B):
1. Open 4 to 5 seperate Firefox windows and play youtube HD videos
2. Make sure to view with large player (no need to make it fullscreen)
3. After some time (say for 3 to 5min), we can observe an X server crash.

This is reproducible regardless of whether or not VDPAU is used.

I've noticed that this bug is only present when there's high network activity.

If I'm not running any torrents or streaming anything the system will stay logged into the same session indefinitely, but if I'm downloading lots of torrents the session will log out randomly even if I'm not doing anything graphics-intensive (eg, 5 mins ago it logged me out while the only things open were qbittorrent and a nautilus window).

I don't think it actually is a graphics driver issue at all. I'd suggest looking into the network drivers if you're unable to find anything wrong with the graphics drivers.

I have 12.04 32bit with a NVIDIA GPU Quadro NVS 290 dual monitor with one large X Screen.

I've experienced this problem since I updated to 12.04, crashes often enough to seriously disturb my work.
It might be network activity related, but the crash is in the nvidia driver (both 295.40 and 302.07).

Actually it's 2 crash behavior for me; one is when screen totally freeze up but it's still possible connect; the other is when screen goes black and the login screen appears. I think sometimes the nvidia drivers hangs instead of crashes.

Attached is gdb backtrace (only one method), maps and nvidia bug report.

Reproducable by running running the following site (that measures your broadband):
 1. Open http://www.bredbandskollen.se/ in firefox
 2. Press "STARTA MÄTNINGEN"
 3. If no crash then press "Mät igen" (to the right) and repeat step 2.
 4. While doing this scroll up and down in another window.
     - Firefox will cause crash
     - Sublime Text 2 causes crash faster (http://www.sublimetext.com/2)

It's not necessary to run any browser or any flash content. But crash usually happens for me during scroll.

2. Went into Google Chrome and opened "about:gpu-internals" and triggered an X crash and got brought back to greeter.

3. Switched to TTY1, stopped Lightdm...

4. Ran 'NVIDIA*304.37.run --sanity' Nvidia installation sanity check and this is the output:
=> '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so is not a symbolic link!'
=> 'Installation was altered since the last installation. It is recommended that you reinstall the driver"

5. Reinstalled the Nvidia 304.37 Binaries as instructed by the Nvidia sanity checker.

6. Restarted Lightdm.

7. Navigated to Google Chrome and ran "about:gpu-internals" and guess what? NO CRASH :-)

Think this solves the problem...

Hi again,

I'm happy to report that the crashes (see #212 above) disappeared for me when I installed the 304.37 binary driver (Linux 64-bit) that was released yesterday.

I had to purge all previously installed driver packages and run the Nvidia installer twice (to disable Noveau), but now it's rock solid.

I think we finally have this solved! I installed Nvidia driver 304.37 using this: http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ppa/ubuntu not wanting to take a chance on a manual install with my kernel upgrade. (3.4) Kudos to the Nvidia team for staying with this.
I spent maybe 1 1/2 hours watching Youtube videos-mostly from the Slingshot Channel which I enjoy greatly and are available in full (1080) HD. No logouts-no problems so far. Details @ post #60.

Ubuntu 12.04-x86_64 with Firefox 14 Nvidia GeForce 9800GT graphics.

The next 304 release (the fix is not in 304.32) will contain a fix for the above described problem. This driver should be released very soon.

If you continue to experience problems after upgrading to the next 304 release when it's available, please file a separate bug instead of continuing to update this bug. When you file that bug, please try to provide as much detailed information about the problem as possible. (See my comment #144 here.)"

my mistake, I saw some reports of the same problem in the comments of this bug (GPU Fallen off the bus, blank video or simply frozen video, etc). we have an open bug but it's been ignored for 9 months:

I've been using the workaround of running in 2d mode since I first encountered the random log off bug when 12.04 first came out (I subbed to this bug 2012-06-08 13:23:32). Since then, even with heavy daily use (8 hours+) I haven't had a single random logout... until today, just now. I presume something to do with some of today's updates.

As I said, this has been working fine for me, so I hadn't tried any of the driver fixes, but I thought it worth mentioning this. I'll try the driver upgrade now.

The problem isn't the drivers it's the Xorg install script that overwrites and alters files that the Nvidia Binary driver relies on and then this crashes the X server. @ag-restringere,
you aren't supposed to install the drivers from the .run while X is running. if you took the time to read the README, you would have seen this:

"Before you Begin

Before you begin the installation, exit the X server and terminate all OpenGL applications (note that it is possible that some OpenGL applications persist even after the X server has stopped). You should also set the default run level on your system such that it will boot to a VGA console, and not directly to X. Doing so will make it easier to recover if there is a problem during the installation process. See Appendix J, Tips for New Linux Users for details."

@Hector, did you update Xorg after installing the driver? It might have
replaced some libraries that the nVidia driver relies on. Try a sanity
check with the .sh driver package and the --sanity flag. It might fix
things for you.

Running Kubuntu 12.04, nVidia 295.40, and KDE 4.9

I had 240GTS card which I sent back to the store because I thought it was a hardware fail, that said, it still may be because of heavier hangups. Now I am using the backup card which is 8500GT, and here I never have hard hangups, but logs me out.

I hope I don't get my 240GTS back now because of faulty drivers, that will be waste of cash.

Even with the latest Xorg from xorg edgers PPA and the lateste nvidia driver, Unity on 12.10 immediately crashes with a segmentation fault.

The sad part is that now they removed Unity 2D and I am also unable to install Classic Gnome, so there is NO fallback. I am trying to work with nouveau now, and oh boy is that experience unstable. Unity just stops working on a regular basis.

When I bought this new laptop which only has a dedicated Nvidia card, I thought I would be stepping up from my Dell which had an Intel and Nvidia card. That Intel card worked flawlessly with Unity in 12.10 alpha 3, and even the discrete Nvidia card worked like a charm with Bumblebee.

Needless to say, this is extremely annoying.

Oh, and what is with the dependency of nvidia-current on xorg abi 10, 11, and 12?

Yes, you're right, those NVRM messages are fine - they just say that the driver found a couple of nvidia GPUs. I was wondering if you were getting Xid errors or the 'attempted to yield the CPU in atomic mode' mentioned earlier in the thread. Your issue might still be an nvidia problem - if the nvidia module locks up the kernel it can stop any further logging - but it might be a separate issue with X or unity. If you can do so, you could try removing one of the GPUs - I vaguely recall seeing other bugs related to running two nvidia cards.

[ 8649.801] [mi] Increasing EQ size to 512 to prevent dropped events.
[ 8649.801] [mi] EQ processing has resumed after 1109 dropped events.
[ 8649.801] [mi] This may be caused my a misbehaving driver monopolizing the server's resources.

Any idea on what is this?....

I saw previous weeks that this EQ size goes from 512 then 1024 then.. .etc.. 2^n ... and this is avoiding the total freeze... I had yesterday.. So I'm completely lost. Is my problem related to this thread's bug? Another one I couldn't find? Did nvidia solve this thread's bug or not? What about mine???

Lost!! :)
Cheers,

Hi everyone !

On Quantal I still have the bug with 304.51, but experimental 310.14 seems to be okay for the moment !

Testing is simple for me, scrolling this web page make 304.51 crashes every time, but for the moment 310.14 resists :)

Most of the time nouveau opensource driver is more efficient and less-buggy, I recommend it until you need something not provided (DisplayPort does not work well for example).

Hope it helps...

Not fixed for me. Crash happens every 2 to 3 hours, especially when opening new windows and/or new programms. Is really annoying. Nouveau drivers are useless: they crash to: make artefacts on my screen. Using all different versions of Nvidia driver didn't solve this problem. System is very unstable.

in the dmesg log and the system sometimes freezes for some seconds or behaves strange.

This often happens when playing video with the flash plugin.
It may happen more likey when opening more browser tabs and playing video.

So there is still another bug open:
