i think this bug is associate to this one:

I'm having the exact same problem.

I get the same error. Clean install of Kubuntu 81.0 (just installed like 3 days ago). Can't ever shut down properly and getting the error "halt:unable to iterate IDE devices: No such files or directory"

I am getting the same problem. It happen on my Aspire 5520 laptop when I went from Hardy Heron (8.04) to Intrepid Ibex (8.10). The computer stalls at the message (Unable to iterate IDE devices... ) and it won't shut down.

I am attaching the three log files that were requested from others.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I'm still getting the same error but after the error, it says "power down" then it shuts off. Not sure what's causing it to power off now though.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

I am about to be mad of it!

Any ideas on this ?
I tried editing halt init script but the problem persisted. It is really annoying and quite dangerous too, as I too put my laptop in the bag thinking the power off was functioning.

Hopefully DEBIAN 5 is coming out soon and I AM SURE they won't have this issue !!!

Yes, this bug started happening on Intrepid and it hasn't been fixed for Jaunty.
Anybody has any ideas on how to debug this ? Any hints on what could be causing the problem ?
It is happening on many many laptop computers as I you all can see!!

My PC shuts down normally, but that message indicates that something is wrong and I have no clue if that is the case or not.

Isn't this a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart/+bug/92685 ?

I can add something that haven't seen anywhere else, if I press a key twice a couple of seconds after "halt:unable to iterate IDE devices: No such files or directory" got the "system halted" message and the shutdown completes

Same problem in a clean install of Ubuntu/kubuntu 9.04 on an Asus P5KPL-AM mobo.
"unable to iterate IDE devices No such file or directory" message when shutdown, otherwise the shutdown procces seems OK, but a closer look shows that all connected peripherals - keyboard, mouse, KVM-switch, USB-scanner - is left with power on. And there seems to bee no other way than the psu switch to close them down.
Same result if I boot another Linux OS from live-CD
With so many reports similar problems in different distros/kernels, there must be some hardware compatibility problem. Would be nice if someone qualified gave this problem a closer look.

I have a similar problem in Ubuntu 9.04.
Sometimes when I hit "Shut down" in the System menu, the system will not halt but instead the gdm login screen turns up.
Although they may not not related, this situation is very similar to this one: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/italc/+bug/367960

After this happens, I click the shutdown button on the login screen, and a message turns up saying something like:
Will not halt
unable to iterate IDE devices: No such files or directory

But it still halts anyway, though there must be some problem for this to turn up.

Also, I am having this problem too:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/285392

@XiPe

Any key works, even shift and the like, sometimes only once (if halt was waiting for a couple of seconds)

But what is the difference between halt and restart?, because i think that they must differ only on the last step
Maybe laptops now require something extra to complete a shutdown, is a bit weird (and looks like happens with other distros too)
