Bug Description

Hello everyone, I'm using 8.04 Hardy with KDE 3, updated to 04/20/2008. I have to say it's rock solid and fast, you've done a great job, again! Congratulations!

Ok, first of all, I'm on a Laptop. I have a problem with my sound, Hardy detects the sound card, when I run:

cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
I get:
Codec: Realtek ALC885

So, sound card is detected, but sound only comes out from headphones and no sound from integrated speakers, I've read that on the 6.06 there was the same bug and followed the steps to fix it, but didn't work, I tried installing backports, installing kernel 386 (but with this kernel the sound card wasn't detected), re-installed the latest alsa, nothing worked.

I also changed the alsa-base and added "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" also tried changing the model, nothing fixed the problem.

Another thing that is worth mentioning is that on 7.10 the sound worked perfectly!

Thanks.
Serpentus

I believe that I'm having the same problem as Serpentus. I've got no sound except through headphones. I've gone through and followed all the instructions from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449. I've had this issue ever since I got this computer and installed 7.04 on it. At one point through fiddling, I managed to do a complete swap and then only had sound from my speakers; plugging in my headphones did not mute the speakers or produce sound. I needed headphone-only sound which I got by doing a complete reinstall when upgrading to 8.04.

attached are the logs from the Debugging Sound Problems wiki.

Thanks Snowball2050. Just for future reference if you could attach each file separately rather than as a tarball that would be great. For now I'm attaching the files you provided. Thanks.

I've come up with a non-ideal fix for my problem. I found out that what is really going on is that ubuntu is mixing up my headphone jack and speaker outputs.

With "options snd-hda-intel model=auto" set in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
When I plug my headphones into the headphone jack, it believes it to be the speakers and is already outputting sound. Laptop speakers do not function even when switches in the volume control are toggled. <-----Thus headphone only sound

With "options snd-hda-intel model=arima" set in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base:
When I plug headphones into the headphone jack nothing happens. When I toggle Headphone switch to 'checked' in volume control, playback can be heard from laptop speakers! If I uncheck it, I can still get headphone sound from the "Front" output jack as this would always be on anyhow.
When I toggle the headphone switch, I can see in alsamixergui the mute toggles going on and off for the headphone channel. It is not possible to toggle the mute for the PCM channel. Volume is controlled by using the PCM, Front, or Master sliders; Headphone sliders are nonexistant.

I can also use "options snd-hda-intel model=targa" instead of armia to acheive the same results. as far as I can tell, the other model options do the same as 'auto'.

Any ideas?

Hello, everyone. First of all, I'm sorry for not doing what Jarlath asked, didn't have time to do it, and when I did the file alsa-info.sh was corrupted or something cause it closed with an error. can't remember what it was now. But now the file works, I'm going to reboot the laptop with the original alsa-base settings and run the script.

I did what Snowball2050 did, and I can confirm sound when configured with 'targa', but with 'arima' I get no sound.

But, when used with targa I get a "fffffffffffff" out of my speakers AND when I connect the headphones I still get sound from the speakers. But at least I have sound now =), thanks Snowball2050!

I'll reboot and upload the file.

Thank you;
Serpentus

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I updated to the newer kernel (2.6.27) via installing ubuntu 8.10 alpha 4 as the previous post suggested. When loading up Intrepid off of the live-cd, the speakers were emitting sporadic fffttt..........sfhhfffft.....etc noises. Audio files would be barely heard via the speakers, and the sound seemed "corrupted" if that makes sense. If I changed the value in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file to "options snd-hda-intel model=arima", the same results as i listed before (having the headphones and speaker controls reversed) occurred.

I've downgraded back to 8.04 due to other kernel issues but can reinstall to test further if desired.

I just installed intrepid development branch again and found that my sound is working fully with zero configuration. Everything shows up properly in volume control and i have independent control over headphones and speakers. It must have started working somewhere between 2.6.27-2 and .27-4 as I believe it was .27-1 i tried before.

Using kernel: 2.6.27-4-generic

Unfortunately I can´t confirm the Bug fix. I still have the same issue. I installed intrepid alpha 6 today (clean install, I formatted the disk), and updated the kernel to latest 2.6.27-4 and still nothing. I can only use my headphones... So problem persists. T_T

I also played around kmix to see if it was something about the configuration, no luck. I still have to try changing the config file. Maybe that´ll make the trick. I´ll do that through the week and post my results.

I would like to say, though, that you´ve done a great job on Intrepid. It´s coming out sweet. =)

Thanks;

Hello all!

Sorry for the lack of updates from my part... Been using Vista because of this problem + a new problem that there was up till today... NO WIFI!!!!! ha. And now I have no Bluetooth either.... hahaha But I don't use it....

Ok, back to the sound problem.. I have 2.6.27-8 and still no sound, I played with the alsa-base and still no luck...

Anyway, I think I detected the problem, at least for this kernel... When I run this at the shell:

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC889A
$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC883 Digital [ALC883 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

See, I get Realtek ALC889A with the cat command and ALC883 with aplay... BUT more importantly (I think), is that with aplay both devices are #0 and 1/1, I think I should have the analog 0/1 #0 and the Digital 1/1 #0 (or #1)....

Can anybody help me with this, maybe black listing the Digital.... but how?

Thanks in advanced!
Serpentus

Hello everyone. snowball2050, I got a similar issue. Yesterday, suddenly, Ubuntu had no sound in my Dell Studio 1735 laptop, even when I've been working with dual boot Intrepid/Vista since I bought it like 2 months ago. I use Ubuntu 95% of the time. After seeing this audio issue, I booted with Vista to verify if it was a linux problem or a general problem...what was my surprise? I didn't get audio in Vista either.

To make it work in Ubuntu I turned on the "Headphones as Line Out" option and the sound started to work. In Vista I deleted the drivers, reboot and let the OS install the drivers by default...it worked....but note that if , after that, I install the drivers downloaded from the Dell webpage, I lose the sound again. I noticed that Vista detects something connected in one of the headphones plug (Studio 1735 has 2 plugs) ...but of course nothing is connected.

So I agree with you snowball2050, the OS is mixing the channels with one of the headphone outputs. You can read my complete story here:

And, how do I report new bugs?... I followed the steps of the new process and ended up here (launchpad) asking if this was the same bug I was reporting!!! XD

I installed Jaunty first on my HP TouchSmart 300Z computer and only got sound from my headphones. I followed so many stories regarding fixes for this issue and none of them were successful. I do appreciate all the hard work but most of the bugs reported are for sound on laptops. This is one of those all-in-one PCs. It uses the snd-hda-intel driver for sound. Here is some more output on what I have:

Codec: Analog Devices AD1984A

jt@jt-desktop:/proc/asound/card0$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 1: AD198x Digital [AD198x Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I recently installed the latest Karmic build and the same issue exists. I would really love to get this working as Ubuntu is a slick Linux offering. Especially like the compizconfig stuff.

This problem seems to persist on 10.4, I'm having it on a Sony Vaio VPCS111FM. I tried all those tricks that are posted across various bugs/questions/posts, but nothing helped.

I can provide additional debugging information, but as per #22, it sounds like this bug is stale. Is there an open bug in whichever bug tracker is appropriate for this issue?

serpentus, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
