Hello everyone. snowball2050, I got a similar issue. Yesterday, suddenly, Ubuntu had no sound in my Dell Studio 1735 laptop, even when I've been working with dual boot Intrepid/Vista since I bought it like 2 months ago. I use Ubuntu 95% of the time. After seeing this audio issue, I booted with Vista to verify if it was a linux problem or a general problem...what was my surprise? I didn't get audio in Vista either.

To make it work in Ubuntu I turned on the "Headphones as Line Out" option and the sound started to work. In Vista I deleted the drivers, reboot and let the OS install the drivers by default...it worked....but note that if , after that, I install the drivers downloaded from the Dell webpage, I lose the sound again. I noticed that Vista detects something connected in one of the headphones plug (Studio 1735 has 2 plugs) ...but of course nothing is connected.

So I agree with you snowball2050, the OS is mixing the channels with one of the headphone outputs. You can read my complete story here:
