I updated to the newer kernel (2.6.27) via installing ubuntu 8.10 alpha 4 as the previous post suggested. When loading up Intrepid off of the live-cd, the speakers were emitting sporadic fffttt..........sfhhfffft.....etc noises. Audio files would be barely heard via the speakers, and the sound seemed "corrupted" if that makes sense. If I changed the value in the /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file to "options snd-hda-intel model=arima", the same results as i listed before (having the headphones and speaker controls reversed) occurred.
I've downgraded back to 8.04 due to other kernel issues but can reinstall to test further if desired.
