I did this :

sudo apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r)
wget ftp://ftp.alsa-project.org/pub/driver/alsa-driver-1.0.14.tar.bz2
tar -xjf alsa-driver-1.0.14.tar.bz2
cd alsa-driver-1.0.14
./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

Now I should have the current drivers. Which I think I already had.

Rebooted and ...nothing ..went to alsamixer there are only 4 sound controls. Master, PMC, Caller I and Off hook. MAster and PMC were at 100% the other two were muted. unmuted them both.

Still no sound. Does this look right? Its the alsamixer details.

After updating the bios on a Lenovo notebook, my hda-intel sound "changed"

Before the bios update I used kernel 2.6.20.3, external
alsa-driver-1.0.14rc3 and the attached patch_realtek.c (in-kernel alsa
wouldn't work)

After the bios update I use just the alsa contained in kernel 2.6.20.3.

Before bios update, my mixer contained many items: including master,
front, mic, pcm, etc.

Now it only contains master and pcm.

So, I have a few questions:

How can I determine what items are "supposed" to show up in alsamixer?

Where can I submit my laptop soundcard information to help finalize
support of this model/card?

Thank you"

I'm a beginner. I'm in way over my head with all this command line stuff
trying to get my sound working. My sound card isn't even showing up in the
system anymore. I upgraded to gutsy, but i want to figure out how to revert
back to feisty. Any ideas?

Hi all.
After a nightmare of reading many many posts I fixed my sound issues by just issuing
sudo chmod -R a+rwX /dev/snd/
and
sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
according to the troubleshooting guide at http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php/TroubleShooting

I think there is something fishy in the feisty setup which do not allow all users to rw these files.

I'm not sure if it works for a toshiba but I had the exact same problems on my new HP 6710b laptop with builtin audio.

I have just upgraded to gutsy in order to get alsa 1.0.14 and the 2.6.22-10 kernel. Unfortunately, I still have no sound. It looks like the upstream patch does not fix this problem. Attachments to follow.

fuzzyBSc (benjamincarlyle-soundadvice) wrote : More attempts, no success

I just tried patching and building alsa as specified here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/116326/comments/75

No joy with either internal speakers or headphones. I can change volume as before, and this apparently works. Everything appears to see the card, and attempts to play normally. I just don't get any sound. Note that under windows (Vista) the mixer arrangement for this machine is a bit complicated, with separate controls for the front panel and main speakers. I only see two volume settings under Ubuntu: Master and PCM.

I should also mention that whenever I rmmod and then modprobe snd_hda_intel from the command-line, I get this sort of thing:
[ 23.984000] si3054: cannot initialize. EXT MID = 0000
This message also appears in the boot-up dmesg output.

My laptop is nearly identical to matheuu's.

Sucks heaps. Don't think I have had a beep out of this thing since April O7... Never thought I was such an understanding, patient kind of fellow? Ah who needs sound anyway? My chick just dropped my 320 gig external hard drive...with all my music on it...

Does anyone have a layman explanation for all these sound issues?

fuzzyBSc (benjamincarlyle-soundadvice) wrote : Sound playback working with custom patched kernel

Hello,

I have managed to get some sound functions working with a custom-patched kernel.org 2.6.23.1. I applied [1] to the patch_realtek.c file, part of the snd_hda_intel driver. The patch is against a different version, so I had to apply it manually in the end. Attached is the file I ended up with.

It appears that 2.6.23.1 includes an earlier version of the same patch, however this did not work for me. The later patch provides sound playback for me, however I haven't managed to get the mic working as yet.

Alsa 1.0.14 does -not- fix the bug for this laptop model (Toshiba A200/L01). There is some talk here[2] about the patch I used being included in 1.0.15-rc1, so that might fix things.

It may be possible to patch a 2.6.22 kernel in the same way as I patched mine.

The speakers don´t turn off when I plug in the headphones and I do not get any sound from the built in mic. There is no headphone sense option in the also mixer, but there is a off the hook and caller id switch.

FuzzyBSC ? wait ... 'I know that guy! hehe Hey fuzzy, don't know if you'd remember me, used to attend UQ and remember fondly seeing your sleeping bag under your desk in the oooooold Comp Sci buildings. talking 1996 here I think.

Anyway, I've recently bought this laptop, exact same issue. Had trouble dual booting with Vista so wiped the whole hard drive and installed pure ubuntu. No sound and no wireless and no modem. Sound would be good, the latter two would be brilliant (i move around a lot, havn't had the ability to sign up to any broadband contract hence dialup)

Thought I would add in my two bit's worth. After snooping thru the net for a while, I found some ideas and used them. I don't know if they are all needed, but this is what I did to solve my problem. So here goes!

I own a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617. This is the output from:

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Codec: Realtek ALC268
Codec: Generic 11c1 Si3054

Ok, so here's what I did:

1) run

$ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alias

2) add in the next two line onto the end of the file:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=268

3) uninstall all you can of alsa files from the package manager (without having to uninstall ubuntu-desktop or any other critical or needed/wanted files)
4) download alsa-driver, alsa-lib, and alsa-utils from www.alsa-project.org.
5) untar them and run the next line in each of the three folders you have created from the command prompt:

$ ./configure && make && sudo make install

After rebooting, I was rewarded with crisp, clean sounds and music! Good luck to you all! I hope this kind of helped your out a bit!

Just a little tidbit also, for vicomte:

if you have a 4xxx series wifi card like i do, here it your fix to get wifi up and running:

find and download the file V11.1.1.0_XP_DRIVERS.zip

I think you can find it on the intel website.

unpack it and pull out the NETw4x32.INF file (if you have a 32-bit OS) or the NETw4x64.INF file (if you have a 64-bit OS).

apt-get install ndiswrapper

run this command from the folder there your INF file is:

$ sudo ndiswrapper -i NETw4x32.INF

now run the next line:

$ sudo gedit /etc/modules

and add in at the end of the file:

ndiswrapper

This will ensure that ndiswrapper module gets loaded on every boot. Now, I hope this works for you, as it has me on my two computers! I run an Intel 4965AGN chip on one and an Intel 4229 on the other. I have yet to have a problem with the driver. Good Luck!!!

G'day,

Further to my previous success using a custom-patched kernel, I found tonight that installing the backports module under gutsy gives me sound. The package I selected was linux-backports-modules-generic,2.6.22.14.21 which pulled in linux-backports-modules-2.6.22-14,2.6.22-14.10. A quick reboot provides sound without my custom kernel. I'm not sure which module in particular did the trick. I have attached the output of lsmod for anyone who wants to dig through the gory details. Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the situation, now.

This bug report was marked "Fix Committed" against the Feisty kernel a while ago and it appears to be resolved in Gutsy after having installed the 'linux-backports-modules' package which has an updated version of ALSA.
