Thought I would add in my two bit's worth. After snooping thru the net for a while, I found some ideas and used them. I don't know if they are all needed, but this is what I did to solve my problem. So here goes!

I own a Toshiba Satellite A205-S4617. This is the output from:

$ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Codec: Realtek ALC268
Codec: Generic 11c1 Si3054

Ok, so here's what I did:

1) run

$ sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alias

2) add in the next two line onto the end of the file:

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-hda-intel model=268

3) uninstall all you can of alsa files from the package manager (without having to uninstall ubuntu-desktop or any other critical or needed/wanted files)
4) download alsa-driver, alsa-lib, and alsa-utils from www.alsa-project.org.
5) untar them and run the next line in each of the three folders you have created from the command prompt:

$ ./configure && make && sudo make install

After rebooting, I was rewarded with crisp, clean sounds and music! Good luck to you all! I hope this kind of helped your out a bit!

BTW, just want to give a shout-out from Iraq!!!!
