Bug Description

The new Hotmail is not working.
I am using Hardy 8.04 and 8.10
After reading the support forums the problem has been located.
It's commonly a useragent issue.
When the useragent information is modified Hotmail works again.
However for me when I modify the information the new information only
remains for the current session. When I log off or close the Hotmail window
the new useragent information reverts to the original value.
How can this change be made permenant and better yet why isn't it offered as an automatic
update for installation?
general.useragent.vendor;Ubuntu------ Original value
general.useragent.vendor;Firefox-------This makes Hotmail work again !
What can you do to make this change permanent and offered as an update for users?
Like I said when I close the session the original value returns and Hotmail does not properly function.

I have .
Still this does not make much sense to me.
Who ones the line where the fix is made, does Ubuntu own it, hotmail, or firefox ?
The line change is with general.useragent.vendor Ubuntu ( needs Firefox )
So in my eye Ubuntu or Firefox own it, am I wrong?

TJ if you want to lobby for opera, dont do that in a firefox bug. this is clearly the wrong place.

Hello!
Iḿ running Firefox 3.0.3 and in USERAGENT I have the right settings according to several forums

general.useragent.extra.firefox;Firefox/3.0.3 predetermined chain firefox/3.0.3
general.useragent.locale " " " " (my Language/region)
general.useragent.security " " " " U
general.useragent.vendor " " " " Ubuntu
general.useragent.vendorcomment " " " " Intrepid
general.useragent.vendorsub " " " " 8.10

And I can not write in hotmail, also noticed that the update options of Firefox are disabled.

This happened after updating restricted modules, specifically after the installation of JAVA.

I was thinking of manually updating to 3.0.4 to see if this would allowed me to write in hotmail (I need it for school purposes) but after reading couple of forums that I have to wait for Ubuntu to release the update I'm not so sure if it is a good idea to do it manually.

Thank you for your time
Have a great weekend.

Hello Again!!

I had a mistake in my last post, I verified it and it works now.

When type in the adress bar: About:config
And search for USERAGENT appears:

general.useragent.vendor predetermined Chain Ubuntu

Should read:

general.useragent.vendor predetermined Chain Firefox

and to save you close the tab then in file you select QUIT
This way the change is saved in Firefox 3.0.3

And works well under Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10

To verify that the change worked I rebooted the computer several times and no problem what so ever, hopefully it will work for anyone with this little problem.

The oly thing I have not figured out is how to make updates in preferences active again.

In any case thank you for your time!!
Have a great weekend!!!

GREAT. !Mr Tetsuo__Shima!
I am very glad to have your right solution . My son , living in Doha
helped me also by phone because I am not an expert in computers and
I feared to make a wrong handling.
For an unqualilified 72 years retired , It was easy to put your
solution in operation.
The rest of the procedure has been easy.It works!!!
Thank you so much.

For me the workaround no longer seems necessary (3 machines with up-to-date Ubuntu 8.10 & Firefox 3.0.4)? I can now use hotmail again with the default Ubuntu settings. Perhaps MS did react to our complaints...

this is not something we are going to fix. please report this as a hotmail bug. post the complete user agent you see in help -> about to hotmail and tell them to properly parse "standard compliant" user agent strings.

No fix is needed from Ubuntu. Upstream (Microsoft) already fixed the issue in Hotmail a while ago and it works with the default Ubuntu useragent. No need to workaround or use old insecure firefox versions anymore.
