Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution

I'm using a Gmail Imap account. As I'm French, I often receive some ISO-8859-1 encoded mails. Evolution correctly decodes the body of the mail, but the From field is not decoded (see attachment). I haven't checked if the "To" field was correctly decoded (I'll add that later if I can test this...).
Thunderbird decodes correctly all my emails.

Hi there
This seems fairly similar to a couple of reports like for instance bug #15387, bug #115844, and a couple upstream, since this should be solved in the latest development release Hardy Heron, could you please try to reproduce this issue on a live environment of Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .

Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

I still have this bug with Hardy.

In my case (Hebrew) the encoding is utf-8, but the bug is the same.
This problem is not only in the "from" field but also in "Sent Massages", "Massages" and "Sender" (please confirm).

I should add that since in Hebrew and in other non European languages this bug effects all the text, not just isolated letters. This means that the "From" field becomes unreadable rendering Evolution almost unusable. I therefore suggest that the importance level of this bug should be raised.

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to
correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

Is this bug going to be fixed in Evolution 2.22 (Hardy Heron)? It also affects the "To" field, and not only the name of the recipients, but the email too. So, if you want to "Reply to all", it fails.

For example: Pep?= =?ISO-8859-1?Q?r=EDe _Biondi_ <pepe.bio?==?ISO-8859-1?Q?<email address hidden>>

I think it should have a higher importance.

Here is a picture of my Evolution window with the encoding bug in Hebrew on Ubuntu Hardy. This depicts the Hebrew user interface, but the bug is just the same when ubuntu is working with English UI.

I (and cca 60 computers in our firm) have this problem on Hardy as well. It would be great to include Evolution 2.23 package in Hardy repositories. I find this bug essential.

updating the hardy version to an unstable serie would not be a good idea, better to discuss the issue upstream and try to get a fix backported to the stable serie, do you have a mail example to attach to the bug?

I've recieved a mail from Heikki Henriksen, evolution package maintainer. He's open and ready for non-obtrusive patch for 2.22. Could anyone send him this patch?

the upstream bug indicated there has been fixed in hardy so the issue is likely an another one, seems similar to bug #235509

are you speaking about the debian maintainer? you are commenting on the ubuntu bug tracker there, you should ask upstream about patches to fix the issue, on bugzilla.gnome.org rather

more info:
i can also confirm this bug. it seems to be specific to gmail imap implementation.

i have two imap accounts set up in evolution: one for gmail imap and one for my work imap server.
my work messages are forwarded to my gmail mailbox and a copy of them is also kept in my work mailbox.

this setup makes me able to view the same message both on gmail imap and my work imap server.
and the strange thing is that while the work imap account show the corrent FROM lines the gmail imap account still shows =?ISO-8895-1? things.

the above observation makes me feel that while evolution is able to render RFC2047 FROM lines correctly, gmail's imap server somehow makes evolution to screw things up

It's possible, but Thunderbird is able to handle this problem.

Peter Kerekfy (kerekfyp) wrote :

yes, Thunderbird and many other IMAP clients are able to retrieve the correct headers from Gmail (either accidentally or by puspose).

the whole thing depends on the way how the client requests the headers from the Gmail server. it turned out that using the ENVELOPE imap command works around this problem since GImap responds to such a request correctly.

thunderbird has a hidden config option to force the ENVELOPE command. (mail.imap.use_envelope_cmd = true)
(ref: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Using_Gmail_with_Thunderbird_and_Mozilla_Suite#IMAP )
(ref: http://groups.google.com/group/Gmail-Help-POP-and-IMAP-en/browse_thread/thread/85dce8c24385d56f/0a91eec6ed6e0f32?lnk=gst&q= )

it would be very good to have a similar config option for evolution.....

but after all, it _IS_ a Gmail bug ... :-(

OK, I see best solution in combining both ways:
1) including config option to force the ENVELOPE command
2) tell Google

ad 2) does anyone know whether groups.google.com serves as a bugzilla or not for Google programmers? Is there any other way how to tell them?

I also have the same problem:

-Ubuntu 8.04 with all the updates
-Evolution 2.22.3.1 from the repository

The FROM field into the INBOX does not display character like "é, à, è, ...". From GMAIL or HOTMAIL I experience the same problem.

Merci.
