Bug Description
SRU information:
-------
Impact: Causes unhandled exceptions in Apport when trying to report a crash against a program which does not belong to a package any more. (See bug trail for common examples: (1) file disappeared between jaunty and karmic, and (2) program is a hardlink created in postinst).
Fix: http://
Regression potential: Handling this situation in obsolete_packages() could just cause a similar problem to appear in a later code path. This would not mean a regression, since the crash is unreportable either way. So I don't see a real regression potential here.

This happens if the target program in an interpreted language does not actually exist any more. In particular, /usr/lib/
dpkg -S /usr/lib/
and copy&paste the output.
I'll fix the crash anyway, but this looks like a very odd situation.

Right, what I expected. I just don't know how a program that doesn't even exist can cause a crash report. One theory: Did you _all_ get this very shortly after (or during) an upgrade from Jaunty to Karmic? It's possible that during the upgrade, the old hal_lpadmin script crashed since the program and its files got removed underneath it; this produced a crash report, which gets displayed after upgrade, and Apport cannot collect information about it any more since it's gone.
Michał Gołębiowski-Owczarek (mgol) wrote : | #11 |
@Martin Pitt
Look at my dup:
https:/
I didn't run an upgrade, it was a clean install on a new laptop.
Vark (vark) wrote : | #12 |
Mine crashed on the first reboot following the upgrade (it noticed that a crash report was available, crashed when I tried to report the crash automatically), so it may have crashed during the upgrade, but I don't recall any crash messages when it was upgrading.

Obviously I can't speak for anyone else, but that is precisely what happened to me. I got this error on my first reboot after upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic.
Michał Gołębiowski-Owczarek (mgol) wrote : | #14 |
@malrost
As I've already said, I did *NOT* do an upgrade from Jaunty. So the answer to the question whether _all_ of us got this after an upgrade is simpy 'no'.

Both of you reported a bug. While doing this, you must have registered
(you can't submit a bug report to launchpad without registering). So
login, and unsubscribe.
Hundreds of other people like me are interested in the process of this
bug. We receive your complaint mails. Please take the same patience to
unregister as it took you to register.

I guess I'm an idiot. I can't figure out how to unregister.

YOU MUST BE RIGHT...
I WISH I COULD BE OF MORE HELP, UNFORTUNATELY...
I DO NOT KNOW WHAT WENT WRONG...I MEAN WITH ALL THE APT GETS AND STUFF, I
MAY HAVE PUT THE WRONG THING IN THE COMMAND TERMINAL.
THEY SHOULD HAVE SOME KIND OF "TRIGGER" TO PREVENT THIS SORT OF THING
HAPPENING. I
HAD TO RUN BACK TO WINDOWS TRYING TO LEARN THIS "LINUX THING" GOT TO BE A
BRICK WALL.
JUST POKING AROUND TRYING TO GET SOUND FOR MY SKYPE SUBSCRIPTION I SPENT
THREE DAYS AND CAME UP WITH A ZERO. TOO OLD AND NOT CUT OUT FOR THIS KIND OF
DEAL.
AGAIN, I APOLOGIZE IF I DID SOMETHING WRONG.
BEST REGARDS,
SEBASTIAN

Follow the link to:
https:/
On the right under 'Duplicates of this Bug' is a link for 'Unsubscribe'.
Next time you report an Ubutu bug don't select subscribe when it offers
the option.
Don't blame the system for doing what it was designed to do which is
allow effective bug reporting and update the reporter on the status of
his bug. Try getting that level of support from Windows!.
